PWF TV Episode #1
Airing on 11/9/89
The Sportatorium
Tampa, Florida
Hosts: Jim Ross & Joe Pedicino
Show opens with Jim Ross and Joe Pedicino sitting behind that familiar desk from Florida wrestling in the past. Ross welcomes everyone to the debut episode of the Professional Wrestling Federation and he promises some great action in the upcoming hour. Pedicino chimes in that they will soon be crowning champions here in the PWF and says we’ll hear more details on that in this broadcast. Ross pitches it to the ring for the opening bout.
Match One-
The New Breed (Chris Champion/Sean Royal) vs. The Southern Rockers (Rex King/Steve Doll)
Ross lets us know that Doll & King are a brand new team here in Florida having wrestled in other territories with other partners previously, he acknowledges the New Breed’s past success as a tag team and mentions they competed in the Crockett Cup this year. The New Breed seem to be the heels, but they aren’t overly leaning into that role at this point in the match. A fun fast paced match to open the TV show that sees the New Breed steal a win when Champion pinned Rex King with his feet on the ropes! They got a lot of boos leaving the ring as the show went to commercial.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
When we return from the commercial break, Pedicino is joined by Sir Oliver Humperdink who is flanked by the Great Kabuki and a trio of guys wearing camo army outfits with Commando style black grease paint stripes across their face (Ross interjects on commentary that these men appear to be Fidel Sierra, Doug Gilbert, and Ron Starr) Humperdink says the Mercenaries have a match today against Kendall Windham and the Rich Cousins, Johnny and Davey and that we will see just how dangerous these men are, and why THEY will be taking home the tag team titles in the upcoming tournament. Hump also says that everyone who has ever witnessed Kabuki in the ring already knows how dangerous he is, but if anyone needs reminded….they soon will be very soon!
Before going to the ring for the next match. Jim Ross talks while a graphic appears on screen promoting ‘Thanksgiving Homecoming’ coming up on Thanksgiving night at the Fairgrounds here in Tampa and he announces there will be a one night single elimination 16 man tournament to crown the PWF Heavyweight Champion and next week we will learn who many of those participants will be!
MATCH TWO-
Dory Funk Jr. vs. Thunderfoot #1
Funk gets a smattering of applause as the bell rings and he attempts to shake hands with Thunderfoot to start the match to no avail as Thunderfoot slaps his hand away. Ross puts over the rich history of the Funk family on commentary and tells of Dory Jr being a former World Champion. He announces that Dory will in fact be competing in the tournament on Thanksgiving night for the championship. Pedicino mentions that some of the top talent from across America are looking to compete here in the PWF. Before they can say much more, Funk submits Thunderfoot with the spinning toe hold.
As Dory Funk Jr is leaving ringside, a familiar face to most wrestling fans, Precious makes her way over to the desk as Ross politely mentions she isn’t on the format and asks “how can we help you”? Precious tells him, “don’t be condescending, you know who I am, and all these people know who I am!” She goes on to say that she’s here to let everyone know that “Gorgeous Jimmy” is on his way to Florida and that she wants to enter him in the PWF Championship tournament. Ross informs her that she needs to “speak to Mr. Matsuda about such matters, we’re not the matchmakers.” Precious threatens to “slap his face off” for “getting smart” with her. Security takes Precious by the arm and escorts her out of the Sportatorium. Ross apologizes for the “interruption” and pitches to another commercial.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
As we’re coming out of the commercial break we get a pre-recorded promo from Joe Pedicino promoting a card next Saturday night in St. Petersburg featuring a one night 8 team tournament to crown the PWF Tag Team Champions featuring: The Rock & Roll RPMs, The New Breed, Johnny & Davey Rich, “Hollywood” John Tatum & Jack Victory w/Dark Journey, The Southern Rockers, and more!
MATCH THREE-
The Great Kabuki w/Sir Oliver Humperdink vs. Charlie Pitts
Kabuki sprays the green mist into the air before the match starts. Ross & Pedicino put over what a dangerous man Kabuki is and discuss the different forms of martial arts he’s mastered. They also spend some time talking about Humperdink’s history in Florida over the years as meanwhile Kabuki is just dismantling this inexperienced kid right out of Matsuda’s “training academy” which they plug as well. Kabuki tires of toying with the rookie and puts him away with the ‘asiatic spike’. Humperdink yells incoherently into the camera as we go to another break.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
We return to a video set to the tune of the Fat Boys song, ‘Wipe Out’. We pan across a beach when into the frame comes a VERY large man wearing an orange bucket hat, a floral print Hawaiian shirt, and Bermuda shorts. The camera follows him as he’s walking along a pier. The music lowers as a skinny kid approaches him and says, “Sup Dude, what’s your name?” He replies, “They call me, Cannonball Grizzly”. The kid says, “Why do they call you that?” Grizzy smiles and says “Hold my hat”....he runs to the edge of the pier towards a bunch of people swimming and yells “CANNONBALL” as he bails off into the water making a huge splash! The camera pans back and a graphic reads, (“Son of the Beach” Cannonball Grizzly is on his way to the PWF)
MATCH FOUR-
“High Chief” Sivi Afi vs. Robbie Rose
Ross and Pedicino really sing the praises of Sivi Afi and build him up as a big deal and really put over the “High Chief” moniker. This was a relatively short match that eventually saw Afi put away Rose with a splash off the top rope. Ross mentions that Afi is a “heavy favorite” in the PWF Heavyweight title tournament.
We see another promo for ‘Thanksgiving Homecoming’ on Thanksgiving night at Tampa Fairgrounds and then cut to Joe Pedicino who is with Kendall Windham. Windham says that he and the Rich Cousins are going to shut down Humperdink’s Mercenaries coming up next. He also mentions he has his sights set on the PWF Heavyweight Championship and that he has a legacy to live up to and that he will stop at nothing to rise to the sames heights that his Father and Brother did, right here in Florida!
COMMERCIAL BREAK
MATCH SIX-
MAIN EVENT- SIX MAN TAG TEAM ACTION
Johnny & Davey Rich/Kendall Windham vs. The Mercenaries (“Dirty” Doug Gilbert/”Rotten” Ron Starr/”Assassin” Fidel Sierra) w/Sir Oliver Humperdink
Jim Ross points out that Ron Starr is the most experienced man in this match and clearly the “captain” of his team. He speculates that Johnny Rich is the more experienced man on his side of the ring. The match starts off very fast paced with the babyfaces tagging in and out frequently and getting the better of things until Starr distracted referee Mickey Jay allowing Humperdink to trip Davey Rich which Gilbert quickly took advantage of, giving the Mercenaries control of the match, they did a good job of “cutting the ring off” not allowing Davey Rich to get the tag. After several minutes of “heat”, Rich managed to leapfrog over Starr and get a tag to Kendall Windham who came in “like a house of fire”! All six men ended up in the ring, as the referee struggled to restore order, Humperdink jumped up on the ring apron, this allowed Kabuki to slide in and spew the green “mist” into the eyes of Windham, allowing Starr to give him a school boy roll up as Hump got down off the ring and the referee turned around in time to count the 1-2-3!
Ross incredulously yells, “the House of Humperdink stole this one, Joe! Is this the kinda thing we have to look forward to with this bunch?” Joe replied, “If past history is any evidence I would say we have a LOT more of this kinda thing in the future unless we can get someone in here who keep some kinda order!”
Ross: “Well folks, I guess that remains to be seen. Thanks for joining us for the inaugural episode of the PWF and we’ll see you back here next week for more action…right here from the Sunshine State!”
