NWA On Demand
Quick and dirty thoughts from what I've seen: - Andre vs. Tank Patton is a fun little bout centering around Patton's loaded cast. Andre doesn't do much that's new, but he's still mobile and works smart, and the big payback spot at the end is cringe-worthy. - I have new respect for Gino Hernandez as an in-ring worker. I didn't really like him at all on the World Class set, but he actually managed to drag a decent match out of Ox Baker through bumping, selling, running, and sheer willpower. If he can do the same to Ivan Putski he'll be a true miracle man. - Want to see others' thoughts on Lothario & Mascaras vs. the Funks. It's 2/3 falls and 25+ minutes. It's not one of the true high-end Funk tags but I still thought it was really good. Jose's already past his prime in 1979 but he does throw awesome punches and knows how to sell. Mascaras actually works a short FIP segment, which is amazing in and of itself.

Quotable Wrestling
I myself am horrified that I laughed at this, especially now. I guess it was out of its sheer audacity: "Before Dusty Rhodes' daddy was a plumber, he worked as a shoe salesman. And he was so successful at running his shoe store, that to this day in Austin, Texas, when people think of black loafers, they think of Dusty Rhodes' father." --Jim Cornette, early 1988

[1997-02-01-ECW-Crossing the Line Again] Tommy Rich vs Terry Funk
This went on too long, and I agree with everything Kevin said about Rich getting too much. Rich DDT'ing Jim Molineaux twice as completely pointless. Still, there's some decent psychology here, and Rich still throws a good punch. Dig the idiot ECW fans "whoo"-ing because of the spinning toe hold. Uh, that's not the same thing as a figure 4, guys.

[1997-02-01-WWF-Shotgun Saturday Night] Interview: Headbangers
I guess I get what this was supposed to accomplish, but...yeah. Kind of crazy that Jim Cornette seemed more in touch with '90s metal when he booked these guys in SMW (not to mention rap music with the Gangstas...)

[1997-02-01-ECW-TV] Taz promo
God, Taz just blows away Shane Douglas when it comes to the "self-righteous sticking-up-for-pure-wrestling guy who swears a lot" gimmick. The way he spits out "fake karate tae kwon do long-haired faggot" when describing RVD makes him sound like he really believes that about Van Dam, making the use of the slur effective instead of cheap and gratuitous (okay, maybe it's a little cheap). Then he lays into Sandman, Dreamer, and Terry Funk.

[1997-01-27-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant
Yeah, this seems a little much, especially since they don't do anything new. Giant teases a chokeslam of Eric Bischoff--the payoff to which could have been a legendary moment but was just sort of tossed off in the middle of a subsequent Nitro, IIRC. Giant makes his own save from an attack by the Outsiders, and Lex Luger is out in a Nitro shirt to stand by the Giant and confronting the Outsiders. Somewhat refreshing to get Luger back into the main event fold, even if this segment sort of petered out.

[1997-01-27-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Hulk Hogan
Looks like the decision's been made for Savage to be the next NWO member, looking back on this segment now. Hogan and Bischoff talk up Hollywood's strong technical wrestling acumen, and then Bischoff plays Heenan to Hogan's Narcissist, as he fawns over Hogan's promised post-match posedown.

[1997-01-27-WCW-Nitro] Randy Anderson, NWO, Rick and Scott Steiner
Randy Anderson has taken a personal gift for his help at Souled Out, so for this violation of company policy, Bischoff fires him. Eric is an awesome two-faced asshole pretending to follow HR policy while Hall and Nash guffaw. Bischoff then overturns the decision and demands the Steiners return the belts or be found in breach of contract.

[1997-01-27-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, The Undertaker and Steve Austin
Pretty good segment. I actually quite liked Shawn's promo here, as he actually puts his opponents over and puts the nature of the championship era. All the talk about "attitude" is pretty jarringly prescient, too. The only negative was Vince having to repeatedly jut in to put over the Shawn-Sid match on Thursday Raw.

"Sock" as in a sock to the jaw, I believe. One of Lothario's finishes was a Ronnie Garvin-style KO punch.

Exile on Badstreet #9 = Yeah We Said It (The Life & Times of Buddy Landel)
Buddy went to his grave convinced that Dusty at least TOLD him he was in line for the title. As time went by he seemed to be less sure that Dusty actually meant it. What's not in dispute are the plans of Buddy being put with Baby Doll--both Cornette and JJ Dillon have corroborated that, at the very least. Baby Doll was a major act for the company in 1985 so at minimum he lost out on a very sizable push, even if it wasn't World title level.

What are you watching?
It's in Harley's book from '04. Could be something his ghostwriter completely made up, but I want it to be true.

Is there any truth to Harley Race's story about defending the title against Robot C-3 and then having to shoot on him?

Justice Scalia's dissent or Bob Backlund promo?
Clarence Thomas' non sequitur discussion of "dignity" in his dissent brought to mind the pitiable wailing of Hollywood John Tatum.

Overdone Pushes That Annoyed You
To me this begins and ends with a fairly obvious but unavoidable pick: WCW's #1 heel going from Ric Flair to Brother Bruti. So horrid on so many levels that it scarcely needs explaining. Beefcake was never a *great* worker but you can at least understand why he earned his babyface push in the late '80s. In 1994 he had nothing at all going for him other than being Hogan's pal.

Wrestling = Art... A Conversation
But with Dory and PWO it's an awfully limited "collective." Ask the question again at Wrestling Classics and you're not going to get "no one else" believing he was great.
-
Wrestling = Art... A Conversation
I think Dory is a great worker and part of a top-5 all-time tag team. I also despise Duran Duran, but I'm admittedly a dwindling minority on that.

Random questions thread
But Hogan jobbed for Flair in January... WCWSN did a 3.2 on the 3/2 show where Loch Ness wrestled for the second straight week, which was phenomenal...but it was also a week where both Nitro *and* Main Event were pre-empted.

Best Matches from 1976
Gwyn Davies vs. Steve Veidor from 5/26 is one of my favorite matches ever, World of Sport or otherwise. Others, some of which are probably already known about: - Verne Gagne vs. Jumbo Tsuruta (3/10) - Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Rusher Kimura (3/28) - Terry Funk vs. Jumbo Tsuruta (6/11) - Giant Baba vs. Billy Robinson (7/24) - Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Jack Brisco (8/28) - Dick Murdoch vs. Killer Karl Kox (12/9)

[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant
Sort of the only finish you could really book--Giant has enough of Patrick not counting, so he drops him with a chokeslam, takes out the B-teamers again, then gets swarmed by the A-listers as Hogan clobbers him with a guitar.
