[1990-12-29-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Tom Zenk
Zenk is such an ineffective dork. Arn talks about being labeled an overachiever all his life--how he wasn't big enough or strong enough or well-built like the Tom Zenks of the world to be anybody. Another great promo from Anderson, one that would probably make Vince McMahon's head explode.

[1990-12-22-NWA-Pro] Terry Taylor vs Rip Rogers
"Dude wrestles for an extended period of time in his ring gear" is a favorite wrestling occurrence of mine and Rogers comes through with flying colors (mostly pink) here. We get chokeouts with the ring jacket, a payback choke spot, and some surprisingly vicious brawling on the floor. The best WCW Rogers match yet--was THIS the match RE voted as #1?

[1990-12-22-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Eddie Gilbert
Without contemplating every guy on the yearbook I think Gilbert is a pretty safe Promo of the Year.

[1990-12-22-USWA-Memphis TV] Jim Cornette and Fabulous Ones promo
Cornette is bringing the Fabulous Ones back together to watch over Lawler and for Cornette to counteract Sam Bass Lowe. Cornette is a breath of fresh air here, not that the USWA was getting stale or anything. Good promo from all 3 guys and the Fabs return comes off as a pretty huge deal.

[1990-12-22-USWA-Memphis TV] Music Video: Jerry Lawler
Austin Idol is coming back to attempt to collect the bounty on Jerry Lawler! Lawler invokes his feud with Idol & Rich and more or less dares anyone to try to collect in another excellent promo. A music video follows with Lawler punching the snot out of almost every big name to come through the area: Race, Bockwinkel, Hogan, Kamala, etc. etc. etc.

[1990-12-16-NWA Starrcade '90] Sting vs Black Scorpion (Cage)
This is a lousy match in front of a mostly dead crowd (that had been jacked most of the night) that's only interesting for the novelty of seeing Flair work head scissors and cravats and not being able to throw chops or even take big bumps, lest he give away that trademark side bump of his. Even the postmatch Horsemen beatdown is tepid by their standards, including a tepid babyface save and an anticlimactic unmasking. On one hand this is the worst "big card" main event of the year by a country mile, but on the other the fucking Scorpion saga is over. In my book that's a net result of a ***** MOTY that easily eclipses anything that El Dandy joker did in 1990.

[1990-12-16-NWA Starrcade '90] Barry Windham & Arn Anderson vs Doom (Street Fight)
Don't get time being an issue at all. Ross outright says at the start that this will be too brutal to last long. Honestly, street fights SHOULDN'T be 25-minute epics. Anyway, this is fantastic and on the shortlist for U.S. MOTYC. The ending is a little lame but there's so much awesome shit during and after the match--this is seriously one of the greatest "brawl to the back" moments in wrestling history. Simmons is an absolute monster here, crushing Windham with an awesome spinebuster and clobbering Arn out of mid-air with a clothesline.

[1990-12-16-NWA Starrcade '90] Lex Luger vs Stan Hansen (Bullrope)
Hansen as I remember it had nothing but good things to say about Luger as a worker--that he was willing and able to do whatever Hansen asked of him. Lex adjusts pretty damn well to a role he doesn't often play, even as a babyface, and that's working underneath. He took and dished out some stiff shots and I really liked the spot where Luger was down and kicking up at Hansen like a maniac. This moves to a heated brawl on the floor, and we go back in to a REALLY fun finish that's clever and that the crowd is way into. Hansen matches outside All-Japan almost invariably lead to bullshit finishes but this one finds a way to appease Hansen's rep while also being satisfying. This isn't one of the all-time high-end guys-attached-to-each-other matches but it was pretty damn fun.

[1990-12-16-NWA Starrcade '90] Konnan & Rey Misterio Sr vs Chris Adams & Norman Smiley
They must have gotten USWA Challenge or UWF television in St. Louis because Adams is pretty over. Paul E. tells a hilariously un-PC account of how Konnan's parents met. These guys' reach sort of exceeded their grasp here but there was some unique stuff here not being done on U.S. television. This was a surreal idea all-around with the presence of the Russian New Japan shooters and two no-name Stu Hart trainees representing Canada.

[1990-12-15-WWF-Superstars] Mr Perfect vs Kerry Von Erich
Kerry would actually go over DiBiase at a number of house shows, often with Virgil in his corner. Weird, because his push completely evaporated after that and he stuck around for another year doing pretty much nothing. This is a bad match but another strong angle involving DiBiase. I'm honestly starting to think that DiBiase could be 1990 MVP of the company among guys who were there throughout the year. I mean, obviously the true MVP is Hogan, but he was gone for the summer and Savage was saddled with Rhodes for too long. DiBiase had his hands in just about everything.

[1990-12-15-WWF-Superstars] The Mountie vignette
Jacques seems to be making his Canadian accent as broad as possible. The head of ALL Mountie horses points to Canada, the other end always points to the United States.

[1990-12-15-WWF-Superstars] Cain the Undertaker vs Mario Mancini
The Update segment from a week or two earlier emphasized the "Kane" part more than the Undertaker part, oddly enough. Andre the Giant's ill-fated appearance as a participant in the Royal Rumble is mentioned--God knows how that would have gone.

[1990-12-14-NWA-Power Hour] Sting vs Moondog Rex
Rex was actually getting a semi-push as a solo act which is another illustration of what complete shit the WCW roster was turning into. He's awful here. Scorpion's dialogue is mercifully drowned out by the poor audio quality. Sting threatens two fans that he thinks are rail-jumpers only to get attacked mildly annoyed by a psychotic woman, who I believe is Bambi. Ross' open contempt for this bullshit is palpable.

[1990-12-14-EMLL] El Dandy vs El Satanico (Hair vs Hair)
Well, here's that Dandy brawl I was waiting for--he's put on a clinic in every other type of style this year (well, except shoot-style, I guess). I think we have a new MOTY. I actually wasn't that high on the finish as I watched it live--we got enough fake fouls in their last match. But reading the reviews here I think I'm coming around, and that's enough to put this back in the #1 spot. This had everything--sick amounts of blood, some great crunchy flying moves, technical work, epic near-falls, and guys getting dropped on their heads. I love how Dandy doesn't lose his edge even though he's working technico--he's still a crafty bastard and that's what gives him the winning edge in the end.

[1990-12-09-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri
Did Savage ever wrestle in this get-up? What would happen if Savage in this gear ever wrestled Tugboat in his? It'd be like watching Ron and Don Harris going at it. Savage relishes describing what he did to the Warrior with his scepter. Savage promises to strip the Warrior of both his belt and dignity. Great, great interview.

[1990-12-09-AJW] Aja Kong & Bison Kimura vs Akira Hokuto & Suzuka Minami
Joshi dipped hard in the middle of the year but rebounded with some great stuff and some at-the-very-least fun stuff. This is closer to the "fun" category than great, but it's enjoyable from what we see. I get that she wasn't quite as high on the pecking order at this point but it's striking how much more giving and vulnerable Aja comes across than Nakano. Aja gets the win with a Jackhammer off the turnbuckles. Pretty shitty sportsmanship from the sore-loser Marine Wolves afterward.
