[1999-10-25-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin & The Rock vs New Age Outlaws
The wrestling in the WWF is slowly starting to matter again. Not only is this a good TV main event with tremendous heat, but the finish took *me* in all over again--I'd been wondering for the past several weeks how we were going to get to DX getting back together because I had no recollection of how it happened. Well, here we are, as X-Pac runs in and gives Billy Gunn an upset pinfall over The Rock. A top tag team *should* probably beat two top singles guys, especially if the two singles guys are supposed to face each other in a triple threat in a few weeks.

[1999-10-25-WWF-Raw] Acolytes Bar Fight
Yeah, I don't get why we had to inject racial slurs into this--like the Acolytes would be above getting into a fight otherwise? Fun fight, though.

[1999-10-25-WWF-Raw] Mankind and Vince McMahon
I wonder if Vince has actually read Foley's book, or any book in the past 35 years.

[1999-10-24-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Goldberg vs Sting
I liked the closing stretch of this but the sheer ridiculousness of the production and lack of communication casts a stink over this--which is frustrating because there's actually a kernel of a really good PPV here, fighting to break out from under Russo's bullshit and WCW's trademark communication breakdowns. Schiavone and Heenan are in open revolt before and after the match because nobody can be fucking bothered to clarify minor details like is this a title match or not? Not to mention how stupid they looked for remarking that there was no ref and that surely Charles Robinson wouldn't be available, two seconds before he charges into the ring fit as a fiddle. As it stands Goldberg is apparently the new WCW Champion and I have no idea how, but I'm pretty sure this doesn't last.

[1999-10-24-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Ric Flair vs DDP
Hey Charles, you're a great ref, but come on: call it as a shoot. The Flairs are all over the place in a program with both DDP and the Filthy Animals. The work down the stretch is pretty vicious but sort of pales compared to the U.S. title match we just saw. The seriousness of the injury angle is pretty much undone by the Animals' ambulance hijacking.

[1999-10-24-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Goldberg vs Sid
Looks like they're turning Sid face because reasons. That said, it's an effective and interesting way of doing it. I mean, yeah, it's basically Austin at WM13 all over again, but if you're going to steal, steal from the best, right? Plus the match is worked completely differently than you'd expect going in, while still making psychological sense. I don't know if this was the plan before Russo got there and he left it alone, or if he booked this himself, but it might be the high point of his WCW run and one of the performances of Sid's career.

[1999-10-24-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Sting vs Hulk Hogan
Titles are just props so there's no actual need to get them over or put over the idea that a wrestler would want to win one. It's all about swerving the paying customer.

[1999-10-23-ECW-Philadlphia, PA] Spike Dudley vs Little Guido vs Super Crazy
Not a world-changing match but a fun one, with some pretty crazy dives by Spike and some big bumps taken by all 3. Big Sal is effective as usual--his spots tend to be samey, but they're reliable every time out, so where's the need to change things up?

[1999-10-23-MPPW-TV] Interview: 'Doug Gilbert' & 'Tommy Rich'
Christopher and Spellbinder take some very, very low blows at Gilbert and Rich here. Rich was NWA World champion for a whole 24 hours before they found out he couldn't work a lick and had to take the belt off of him. "Doug" also points out to "Rich" that no one has *ever* actually "said anything about 'fired up'" in the funniest part of this. Like with the original Arn parody, there's an undercurrent of viciousness and true heat here that separates this from your average WWF/E parody.

[1999-10-23-AJPW-October Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa & Yoshinari Ogawa vs Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama
A good match, but not at the level of the March tag. In contrast to everyone else, I thought the *beginning* was the weak spot here--the March tag had some beautiful matwork and did an excellent job of establishing Ogawa as a threat by sheer craftiness. Here, the opening portion basically felt like filling time because, hey, we're going 25+. The near-falls down the stretch are good but not quite jump-out-of-your-seat good, and sometimes this feels like two Akiyama-Ogawa and Kobashi-Misawa singles matches than a tag. Still a good match in the series with everyone acquitting themselves well, and while it might be a bit on the long side the finish carries a nice tone of finality to it.

Good timing having Taz as the centerpiece here. This presentation really, really doesn't feel like ECW.

[1999-10-21-WWF-Smackdown] Steve Austin vs Val Venis
I like Val being all-business here--no towel, no pre-match spiel. He hangs with Austin really well--a well-worked match with some big bumps, some psychology, and a clean finish. Not a world-changing event but it stands out as very good in the context of 1999 U.S. wrestling.

[1999-10-21-WWF-Smackdown] Mark Henry and Sex Therapist
"Wig split" is said. I thought the zoom-out and reveal of who Henry was spilling his guts to was pretty funny. This doesn't come close to redeeming this whole stupid angle but this is by far the best of these segments.

[1999-10-19-Michinoku Pro] CIMA vs Minoru Fujita
Decent opportunity to see CIMA in a singles setting. Fujita executes some moves nicely but turns in a pretty unmemorable performance. This isn't definitive proof that CIMA has made the leap to be a complete all-around singles worker yet or anything, but it was enjoyable and didn't overstay its welcome.

[1999-10-18-WWF-Raw] The Rock & Mankind vs Hardcore Holly & Crash Holly
Rock has a lot of handicaps, between his hurt ribs and Foley refusing to participate. That's needed for the Hollys to be credible main event opponents for Rock 'n Sock. Amazingly, in a match with the Rock in it (granted, against low-level opponents), Foley still draws the biggest pop of the match just for briefly standing up. HHH costs Rock the tag titles but gets nailed by Austin afterward. Seeing Austin awkwardly face off with the Hollys while Rock does his thing to HHH in the ring is an odd little collision of worlds. Austin and Rock stare each other down as we go off the air.
