In terms of putting heat on the bookers, the WWE has done itself no favors in that regard by basically portraying itself as a heel promotion for the past 19 years. -
Sigh. Sadly the WWF would get more practice with this in the coming years. Many of the testimonials are sincere, especially the two seen here, but the cynic in me still detects a sense of deflection and spin from the WWF as a whole, and maybe some individual members of the roster.

The debut of the Mulkey Brothers in the WTBS studio, getting brutalized for almost ten minutes by an enraged Midnight Express out to send a message after the James Boys hogtied and dragged Jim Cornette. Tony: "That young man might not get up--..." Cornette: "I DON'T CARE!"

Hennig seems out of it, fumbling less-than-perfectly with his headset and calling Schiavone "Tenay." Schiavone hypes the "hip, new relationship" between WCW and Tommy Boy Records. Hip and new--that's Tony, all right. And what better choice to head up the West Texas Rednecks than Minnesota's Greatest Athlete? (Not that there aren't rednecks in Minnesota.) Some guy for Tommy Boy declares that this is the first time that wrestling, in its long history, has merged with music. Oh come ON--no company who so shamelessly courts 1980's WWF fans should be letting that one slide. Raven expresses his like for Afrika Bambaata in a desperate attempt to lend this some credibility. Konnan comes out to spark a brawl with Hennig due to Curt's heinous and inflammatory remarks that he prefers Willie Nelson to rap. Fightin' words indeed.

A surreal night for me. I met some friends at a bookstore for a semi-formal debate on various school issues, then came home to enter the WWF AOL chat to get caught up on the PPV. Owen had already fallen and his death would be announced in probably another half hour. I still wasn't 100% convinced it wasn't a work until my 11 o'clock news had their own coverage. Meanwhile my brother, who hates wrestling but shares my love of cinematic cheese, was providing some needed levity with details on the Jesse Ventura TV movie.

LOL at Nash calling out Bret for being "out of control" and challenges him on Goldberg's behalf. Yeah, this makes perfect sense. The idea of a match on the Tonight Show was an intriguing one but this was so not the way to go about it, not that it would matter in the end anyway. Bret's good here, at least.

Eh. Two minutes after the finger thing, Dirty White Boy is out and completely no-selling it ("You expect us to believe that this big piece of toilet paper is 3000 years old?!"). The sand in the finger can be faked just as easily in storyline as it obviously was in real life.

I never got the Attitude Era Unseen set but I'm pretty sure most of those matches didn't have any commentary, and I'm outright hoping for the same here, or at least give us the audio option for it.

Cornette has always stressed that Prince Kharis was never pushed as an actual mummy--he was a protege of a delusional madman *claiming* he was 3000 years old, but wasn't.

Also, just because Bruce brought it up as a possibility doesn't mean it ever got past the "Hey, what about this?" brainstorming stage. He was in the inner circle of the creative team, so he'd hear just about every possible pitch, from the ones that were nearly put into action to the stuff that was suggested and quickly dismissed.

"Someone oughta tell all these young wrestlers that shoot headbutts just ain't safe, gang." Seriously though, as someone who doesn't get AXS to hear it myself, I'm willing to give JR the benefit of the doubt on this. Shoot headbutts are stupid and anything that discourages anybody from trying them is probably a net positive.

I haven't heard it either, but supposedly according to Bruce they were kicking around the idea of Dustin vs. Hogan at WM9. Yes, really--I guess the thinking was that Dusty and by proxy Dustin might have been a potential free agent with the change in WCW regimes going on at the time, and that Dusty might have been out along with Watts and JR. I don't know if I believe it but to me, it's more plausible than Matt Borne's contention that Doink vs. Hogan was supposed to happen at that show.

411mania posted a list of "Extras," more matches. Didn't clarify if it was for a Blu-Ray release or an extra retailer-exclusive disc. Most exciting for me is the match Mike Shaw had as The Mad Monk. We also get an extra Phantasio match, Hogan vs. Savage in a cage, Ultimate Warrior vs. Kamala, tryouts for the Harris Twins and Harlem Knights, and others.

The heat machine is out for part of this, but this is really one of the better WWF TV matches of the year. Some really good out-of-the-ring brawling and some great punches, even as some of this is Austin-and-HHH-by-numbers. HHH had had a string of disappointing performances since SummerSlam when put into "good match" situations, and he got himself back on track here...those of us who decry 2001-02, maybe Austin in May of '99 is really the guy to blame. Post-match is what it is.

So...after being a pure babyface the night before, with the crowd behind him and behind Gorgeous George, now Savage is a heel. WCW, everybody. The lipstick stuff is dumb, all the moreso because it's given absolutely no focus or attention. The only good part about this was Savage trying to shove Doug Dillenger away so he could get some more licks in on the fan.
