How many are actually historically significant full stop? I’m aware that it is hard to quantify his impact on the desegregation of Memphis but the fact remains he is cited to this day as an important figure to the civil rights movement in Memphis. (And we all know the WON HOF is a HOF of Perception just as much as Reality). Sputnik was able to use professional wrestling as a way to help bring about real social change in a positive manner. Sputnik may not be the most historically significant/important person to pro wrestling’s broader history but he’s one of the few wrestlers that could be called historically significant. I know that Sputnik wasn’t the biggest star of his era or even close to it. And quite frankly, it is hard to quantify the overall impact he had on the civil rights movement in Memphis (I’m sure some will question his true impact heavily). I understand that. But I’m more excited about a WON HOF with Sputnik Monroe than with Edge. I used this as a comparison when talking to Johnny P about this yesterday. But imagine if Chris Jericho in 2002 spoke about in favor of gay marriage which (directly or partially) led to a state decide to legalize gay marriage, how immediately would Chris Jericho have been put into the HOF? Like faster than it takes for everyone to read the word “immediately.” I can’t think of a single wrestler, active or retired who made wrestling look like a positively contributing corner of society more so than Sputnik Monroe.

    Before going any further, I wanted to post the WON HOF Ballot Criteria as Stated by Dave Meltzer. This ballot is being sent out to major wrestling stars, past and present, major management figures in the industry, writers and historians. If you are getting this, you are being asked your opinion on who should be inducted into this year's Hall of Fame class. The criteria for the Hall of Fame is a combination of drawing power, being a great in-ring performer or excelling in ones field in pro wrestling, as well as having historical significance in a positive manner. A candidate should either have something to offer in all three categories, or be someone so outstanding in one or two of those categories that they deserve inclusion. The names listed below are those under consideration for this year. To be eligible, a performer must have reached their 35th birthday and completed ten years since their debut as a full-time performer, or be someone who has been a full-time pro wrestler for at least 15 years. Longevity should be a prime consideration rather than a hot two or three year run, unless someone is so significant as a trend-setter or a historical figure in the business, or valuable to the industry, that they need to be included. However, just longevity without being either a long-term main eventer, a top draw and/or a top caliber in-ring performer should be seen as relatively meaningless. The election is broken down into a number of categories. You should check each category for wrestlers that you feel you are familiar enough with based on geography that you've either traveled or are familiar with, and based on the time you have followed pro wrestling. You do not have to vote for a wrestler in every category you've checked. The ballot is also broken down to wrestlers and those who are not pro wrestlers but have been valuable parts of the industry. The maximum number of wrestlers that you can vote for all the categories is ten. You can pick as few as zero if you don't believe anyone on this list deserves inclusion. For wrestling executives, managers, announcers and other outside the ring performers, you can vote for them and they are not counted against the ten. You can vote for as many as five of them. All responses are confidential. There is nothing to worry about politically about any involvement in this process. Your selections will not be revealed unless you choose to do so yourself. Anyone who receives mention on 60% of the ballots from the geographical region and time frame (broken down as Continental United States & Canada; Mexico; Japan; Europe; and Hawaii/Australia/New Zealand) will be added to the Hall of Fame in the class of 2015. If you are unfamiliar with any of the candidates due to geography of having never seen them, that is fine. Ballots are sent to many people from all over the world and from different wrestling cultures so that everyone has as fair a shot at possible. The breakdown for modern and historical performers is 30 years ago, or 1985. So if the last year the person was a headliner, or was a key figure in the industry, was prior to 1985, they would be in the historical class. All performers who receive mention on 10% to 59.9% of the ballots from their geographical region or era will remain on the ballot for consideration next year. All those who receive less than 10% of the vote will be dropped from next year's ballot. They can return in two years based on if there is significant feedback from voters who say they will vote for them. This is mostly for wrestlers who are still active who may improve their career legacy, but can be for retired wrestlers if voters believe they should be put on or returned to the ballot. In addition, in following the lead of the baseball Hall of Fame, which is the model here, starting this year we have a 15-year-rule. The following candidates have been on the ballot since 2000. In baseball, this would be their last year of eligibility. Here, if they don't get at least 50% of the votes in this year's election they will be removed from the ballot. If they are modern candidates, they can be brought back in the historical performers era in two years if it is more than 30 years since their career as a Hall Fame level performer is up

    JohnnyP and I were talking about the WON HOF yesterday while in Si's GWE Viewing Marathon Room and I brought up Sputnik Monroe as a guy I thought should be in. Johnny is a voter so I was stoked when he completely agreed with me and I know I've seen Dylan mention him before because when he did I thought "ok good I'm not alone on this." A few years ago, inspired by Dylan's awesome results collecting for Patera and Blackwell, I decided to try and do the same with Sputnik using clawmaster's site and prowrestlinghistory.com. I wanted to make an outline of a HOF case (main evented these territories vs these guys in these arenas) based on his career and make a HARD push on the desegregation in Memphis angle and annoy Dave with it as best I could to try and get Sputnik on the ballot. I kind of forgot about my little project when I moved across the country right as the GWE Project was starting. I was already pretty discouraged because 50s and 60s Memphis results aren't easily available to say the least and that would be most important "wrestling career" part of his case. However, with it being WON HOF season and talking about this with Johnny P yesterday, I wanted to toss his name out here and see what people think (edit, and then I did 2 hours of work “tossing him out there” sheesh). So in "tossing Sputnik out" I tried to give summaries of the few results I have so far. Highlighting Monroe's feuds, main events, semi mains etc This isn't anywhere close to the full picture. Before I started this literally the first time I had heard of Monroe was from Memphis Heat and I still know next to nothing about his career. But I wanted to share some of the concrete things that I have found with the hopes that the good people at PWO can help fill in gaps/add stories/give thoughts etc. East Texas 10/60-3/1/60 + 5/28/61 He comes in early October and works up and down the card but usually in the semi-main event but he doesn’t really have a clear feud. He usually wins or it goes to a ddq until he starts a feud in late October with Ciclon Negro. He got an NWA Title shot vs Pat O’Connor in Fort Worth on Halloween 1960. From here until March 2nd he is either in the main event or semi main event on the loop except or 10 shows until . I know 10 sounds like a lot, but almost every single result from East Texas during this stretch. Like seriously every day and Sputnik was always in the main or semi-main. Sputnik was gone from the East Texas loop until 10/27/61 (minus one main event from Lake Charles, LA vs Waldo von Erich) when he re-debuted in Houston beating Dory Dixon for the Texas Title in the semi-main event underneath a Buddy Rogers NWA title defense vs Ciclon Negro. #Main Events 49 # Semi-Main Events 15 Won Brass Knuckles Title from Danny McShane in a Cage Match on 11/17/60 in Galveston. Won Texas Tag Team Championship twice. Main events opponents from East Texas 10/27/60-3/2/61 + 5/28/61 vs Don Leo Jonathon vs. Ciclon Negro vs Pat O’Connor NWA Title match x2 vs Dory Dixon vs Pepper Gomez vs Torbellino Blanco vs Stu Gibson vs Duke Keomuka vs Bull Curry vs Danny McShain vs Ray Gunkel vs Dory Dixon vs Waldo vs Erich vs Marvin Jones East Texas 10/27/61-12/27/61 Sputnik showed back up in East Texas for a 2 month run (before this he was somewhere…I have a gap in results from 3/2/61-5/27 and then from 5/29-10/27) # of Main Events 17 # of Semi Main Events 4 Main Event Opponents from 10/27/61-12/27/61 vs Mike Dibiase vs Ciclon Negro vs Tony Borne vs Shag Thomas vs Duke Koemuka vs Stu Gibson vs Jim Dalton vs Pepe Gonzalez Unfortunately there are no attendance figures for any of these runs but Sputnik was positioned as a major heel in the 7 months he was in East Texas from 10/60-12/61 main eventing every building on the loop against every major babyface. His major feuds were against Ciclon Negro, Dory Dixon, and Pepper Gomez. He held the Texas Title, Brass Knux Title, and Texas Tag Titles during these runs (I assume these were the 3 top titles in the territory) and had 2 NWA Title Shots against Pat O’Connor. O’Connor made 6 NWA title defenses in Texas during this time period. Two against Monroe, two against Dory Dixon, one against Pepper Gomez, and one against Don Leo Jonathon. Buddy Rogers made two NWA title defense in East Texas while Monroe was around against Ciclon Negro and Duke Keomuka. It makes sense that Monroe as a heel wouldn’t get a title shot against the Heel NWA Champ. But it is worth noting that Monroe got two shots against babyface Pat O’Connor in the short time he was in the territory. Arizona I had no idea Arizona had a regular wrestling loop until looking for Sputnik results on clawmasters site. You learn cool shit. The results aren’t nearly as comprehensive as East Texas but the same picture appears of Monroe was a big heel in the territory. Before his run really starts or at least before regular(ish) results start showing up, Monroe wrestled a one shot in Yuma, Arizona wrestling Tuffy Truesdale underneath Jim Wright & Baby Blimp vs Buddy Fuller & El Gran Lothario in a “Loser Must Wrestle Victor the Bear” (which WWE should replace the TLC ppv with if you ask me). Arizona 2/7/62-5/2/62 we only have 11 total dates with Sputnik. Only Tucson, Yuma, and Phoenix cards. No clue where else they were working. He was definitely in the territory before 2/7 as he was already Western States Tag Champ with Baby Blimp (Who I bet Grimmas would have loved) by then. He was Western States Champion by 2/14. # Main Events 10 # Semi-Main Events 1 Main Event opponents vs El Gran Lothario vs Greg Peterson vs Hans Steiner (Father of the Steiner brothers obviously) vs Baby Blimp Even though we only have 11 dates here, I think it would be more than fair to say Monroe was the top heel here. Also worth noting that the last date of this run 5/2/62 is a tag match with Mario Galento vs Gran Lothario & Tito Montez with Joe Louis as the special ref. Arizona 2/26/63-3/23/63 A quick stop run again on the Arizon loop. Still very sporadic results almost all from Tuscon this time. We only have 6 cards # Main Events 4 # Semi-Main Events 1 Singles Match Main Event Opponents vs Mad Mongol vs El Gran Lothario It looks like Sputnik came in really for a quick feud with El Gran Lothario. One of these results was Gran Lothario winning an 8 man battle royal for $450. Four Hundred and Fifty Dollars. Easily the smallest amount ever for a Battle Royal. Kind of puts into perspective how small the Arizona territory probably was. Still, when Monroe is on the card, he’s typically in the main event in Arizona. El Paso, Tx 1962-64. There are 5 results with Monroe on them. 5/8/62 Main Events against Light Heavy Champ Gory Guerrero 4/5/63 semi main event vs Dory Funk 4/12/62 semi main event tag with Killer Karl Kox vs Dory Funk Sr and Jr 4/26/63 semi main vs Ricky Romero 8/18/64 semi main vs Enrique Torres For some reason El Paso was separated on clawmaster’s site. Don’t know if it was a single town like Houston would become or if it was part of another loop? Anyway, Monroe was never below semi-main in the very limited dates we have. Memphis 1971 Sputnik worked at Mid South Coliseum 34 times from June 7, 1971-December 12/27/71. At some point before 7/19/71 he won the Southern Junior Heavyweight Title. He primarily teamed with Norvell Austin and together they won the Southern Tag Titles at a one night tournament on 10/25/71 which they held for 2 whole weeks before losing to Robert Fuller and Bearcat Brown. From this point on (10/25/71), Sputnik was in the main event of every single MSC Show. Unfortunately we only have 2 attendance figures from that period: 11/1/71 drawing 3,500 for Monroe and Norvell vs Robert Fuller and Bearcat Wright 11/29/71 drawing 5,200 for Monroe and Norvell vs Jackie Fargo Tojo Yamamoto 3,500 is the lowest # for the year. 5200 would be on the low side as well. I’m sad there are no figures for the Fargo vs Sputnik singles matches during this period. They have a “match with no referee” followed by a texas death match. Too bad we don’t have those figure. # of Main Events 11 # of Semi Main Events 11 Singles Main Event Opponents vs Jackie Fargo Sputnik is definitely pushed as a big piece of the puzzle. As he is in the main or semi-main of 22 of the first 38 MSC cards. Memphis 1972 1/31/72-2/14/72 Sputnik and Billy Wicks revive their old rivalry for 2 singles matches and a tag involving Norvell Austin and Eddie Marlin. These are all firmly in the mid-card. Memphis 1972 5/22/72 – 8/14/72 Sputnik’s comes back teaming with Norvell Austin in the main event against the Interns drawing 5,910 (up 1800 over the previous week’s main event of Interns vs Eddie Marlin and Tojo). Next week they main event again with no attendance figure. Following 2 weeks are Monroe and Robert Fuller vs Von Brauner’s in mains that draw 9000+. To sum this 12 match run of results up # of Main Events 8 # of Semi Main Events 2 This was a really nice final run on top in Memphis for Monroe. He wasn’t the biggest individual star, but he was a big part of some strong shows and again a main eventer more often that not. Florida 1972 9/18/72 - 12/7/72 This starts off with Sputnik working undercard singles matches before Norvell Austin joins him as a tag partner and they start to work more mid card matches until 10/10/72 when they won the Florida tag titles from Jimmy Golden and Robert Fuller on match 3rd from the top underneath a Dory Funk Jr NWA title defense vs Tim Woods and Jack Brisco vs Buddy Colt. Sputnik and Norvell’s main feud after winning the titles is against Bob Orton Sr and Jr but they also work Ron and Robert Fuller quite a bit. They have the occasional main event and semi-main event on what appear to be smaller spot shows but typically are in the mid card even as Tag Champs. After losing the tag titles to the Orton’s on 11/28, Sputnik spins his wheels for a couple of weeks before going somewhere else. Dunno where. # of Main Events 4 # of Semi Main events 6 Single Main Event Opponents vs Jack Brisco Amarillo 1973 10/25/73 and 10/28/73 Have two dates for Sputnik working undercards in Amarillo. Anyone know where he was in 1973? Florida 1974 3/6/74 – 6/7/74 This was not a flattering run for the aging Monroe. He was essentially a jobber. He had matches with Don Muraco, Danny Hodge, Jos Leduc, and lost them all. He also had matches with guys like Tom Jones, Jack Welch, and Arpad Weber (Who?) and he lost those too. Went to a time limit draws with Dennis Stamp and Jose Azzari. Obviously they’re just trying to get whatever value possibly still existed by having him put over any and everybody. Memphis 1975 Sputnik worked MSC 14 times from 4/21/75-9/1/75 This was 46 year old Sputnik in Memphis for one quick last run. He was in the opening match pretty much the entire run. Amarillo 1975 9/18/75 – 12/25/75 + 2/24/76 This is a weird run. First date I have is a tag team draw with Don Fargo against Johnny Starr and Scott Casey. He works low on the cards against Starr, Don Fargo, “Frank” Vachon etc. Then suddenly he’s in the semi-main underneath Funk brother death matches. Then he kinda falls back down then suddenly he’s in the semi main against Dory Jr underneath a Terry vs Andre match. Then he falls down the card against Dario Romero then is facing Mil Mascaras on the next card above a Dory Jr match. He had a spot show main event on a card that had Ricky Romero and pre Bruiser Frank Goodish (who was in a lot of mains/semi mains around this time). After a weird month or so of being literally anywhere on the card, Monroe finishes up working mostly the undercard. # of main events 0 # of Semi main events 4 This is all I have of Monroe results/career wise. Obviously I'm missing major major major chunks including this late 50s/early 60s Memphis Run that made him an unforgettable name and helped change a city for the better. I’m posting this in the hopes that others can help fill gaps for where he worked. More results, anecdotes, etc etc etc. I definitely think he should be in the WON HOF. Obviously this isn’t a full case. But I wanted to start building and I’m hoping the PWO crew can help out. I will post the WON HOF Ballot Criteria and the very little data I’ve collected next. I'm also hoping some of the guys who have votes here will see this and start thinking about Monroe and maybe pester Dave to put him on the ballot.

    I understand your overall point even if I disagree with the criticisms of Dibiase and Taue (Dibiase had great matches and Taue was a talented worker). I think my lack of understanding is because this and the Kawada thread are wedded in my brain and I view Kawada as a fellow reasonable candidate for #1 so I'm thinking about this career stuff in terms of #1 contenders who for me are Hansen, Lawler, Funk, Flair, Satanico, Casas, etc. AGuys who were long time main eventers who had the talent and opportunity and used that to produce great matches variety longevity etc. The #1 contenders have talent and output. Thats why they're #1 contenders. Guys like Windham, Dibiase, Backlund, Taue, etc that you've brought up in this thread aren't guys I'd consider for #1 so I don't really see the point in comparing them to Flair unless it is to compare what a realistic #1 candidate looks like vs an unrealistic #1 candidate. So when I was asking about career I was hoping you'd elaborate more in terms of Flair vs Other #1 Candidates who were talented and had long careers full of great matches with a bunch of different people.

    Pulled a double at work today so I have some catching up to do on this and the other threads but I did want to ask one thing... I'm honestly still not clear. What tools are you using to come to your conclusion of "who had the best career" if it is different from "who is the best worker" but aren't considering it in terms of drawing or being a big star? Also, I think continually pointing at Windham is a red herring. No one who advances the argument that Windham had the talent and potential to be a GOAT wrestler actually advances the idea that he was a legit GOAT candidate. Or if they have I certainly haven't seen it happen.

I'm also not up to speed on post 2002 Kawada which would probably add a few more guys to his case. edit to note that I miscounted. I only named 23 guys originally. Tenzan and Kojima would bring it up to 25 but I did want to make note of that. editing yet again to note that isn't a list of guys Kawada had 3 1/2 star or better matches with. Those would all be the 4star and above "high end" parameter that you noted with your Jumbo list.

    I know Parv asked for only people who listened to the podcasts to comment in this thread and I haven't listened to them but there is something here that I wanted to comment on. One quick thing before I get to a longer thing. I don't know if this is going to be considered "grading on a curve" or something but when I think about Kawada who had great singles matches against Misawa, Kobashi, Jumbo, Taue, Hansen, Steve Williams, Gary Albright, Sasaki, Akiyama, Tenryu, etc and great tag matches against those guys and also including Johnny Ace, Yuji Nagata, Masa Fuchi, Dan Kroffat, Doug Furnas, Terry Gordy, Takashi Iizuka, Yoshinari Ogawa, Kikuchi, Takao Omori, Yoshiaki Yatsu, Satoru Asako, Giant Baba, etc. Considering that Kawada worked in an isolationist promotion that didn't ship him out to various territories, that is actually an impressive amount of workers Kawada had great to all time classic matches with. How much variety does it take for variety to become "wide variety?" The other thing I wanted to talk about was more criteria based. You've found criteria that works for you and that's cool and you have your #1 and #2 guys. I'm still trying to sort out the tippy top of my ballot. My "criteria" for my #1 candidates is less of a "criteria" and more of an "expectation." I expect my #1 wrestler to have longevity, a great peak, super high end matches in a variety of roles etc. The people I have challenging for #1 are Hansen, Flair, Satanico, Lawler, and Terry Funk. Realistically the Kawada/Jumbo/Tenryu/Misawa crew is right there with those other guys challenging for spots in the top 5. All of those guys meet my expectation for having great matches longevity variety etc so then I have to look at each guy and figure out what separates them and what the differences in their candidacy means to me. In my opinion, if you're a candidate for #1 you should have all of those qualities already when it comes to variety, peak, longevity, etc. Flair built his case by traveling around the world working in front of a different crowd every night. Lawler built his case working the same arenas every week for decades. If your criteria is "my GOAT needed to travel around and have great matches everywhere" then you're automatically taking a guy like Jerry Lawler off the table which is crazy to me. Or what about Negro Casas or Tenryu? If someone says "my criteria is that the wrestler must have maintained a strong post prime into their 50s and updated thier work to change with the times" then they're automatically taking Ric Flair off the table which is equally crazy to me. Same thing with tag wrestling. A large part of Kawada's "case" is his status as one of if not the best tag workers ever. If my criteria is "Must have a large variety of singles and tags" then Flair is off the table. Again, equally crazy. But if you're someone who truly values tag work because it is a major part of wrestling, then you could easily point to that as a criticism of Flair's candidacy. You have to consider these guys at the top on a case by case because, in my opinion, the surface level GOAT Case that these guys have are all going to be pretty similar when it comes to Peak, Longevity, Great matches, Variety, etc. But they have different strengths, weaknesses, situations, and contexts that led them to the same place (top of the list). I think its wrong to say Kawada's candidacy is hurt because he didn't travel around and have great matches with a large variety of different workers (even though he did). Kawada's candidacy isn't about traveling around to various territories. It is about what he did in All Japan. I'm not saying your criteria is wrong. It is the criteria that works for you. I just find it sort of...limiting I guess I would say? Like your criteria is wearing a turtleneck meant only for Flair and Jumbo.

    Editing this back in because Parv was quick on the draw and managed to respond before I changed the post to "nevermind." What I said was that I reject the notion that we can't criticize or seemingly have opinions unless we watched guys live week to week. My original post was probably snarkier than it needed to be and I'm sorry for that and am glad I was able to edit it because I don't think (at least I hope) that wasn't really Wade's point. I would kill to have week to week footage of everyone. Not just to compare guys to Flair but because wresting is awesome, especially wrestling from that era. Wade, please regale us with awesome stories of younger, pre touring champ Flair.

    I had no idea where to post this but I got the quote from the Kawada thread and it is so Flair specific I decided to respond to it here. I agree that Flair shouldn't be the only barometer but he is a good one for a lot of reasons. First and foremost, the overwhelming majority of people participating in this project and that run in our circles are extremely familiar with Flair. So if someone compares Negro Casas to Ric Flair its going to mean more than comparing Negro Casas to Yoshiaki Fujiwara. Is it lazy to always use Flair as the barometer? Absolutely. But he's a good barometer because everyone knows him. He's the easiest control in our experiments. Flair's candidacy for GOAT is so strong because it encompasses a lot of ideas we tend to look for in a GOAT. You can make a case for Flair based on peak and longevity. You can point to a ton of great matches. He has a huge list of great matches against a large variety of different opponents. He has great long matches and short matches. He has great matches against great workers. Great matches against lesser workers. Long rivalries and short feuds. So you can take just about any situation and find an example of Flair doing it and comparing it to a different worker. What makes Flair a candidate for GOAT ever also makes him a good barometer for other GOATC. How does wrestler x's longevity compare to Flairs? Do they have a lot of great matches against a variety of workers in a variety of situations? How high did wrestler x peak meaning were they a best in the world candidate for a number of years or not really? If you determine that wrestler x is comparable to Flair in those areas you have to them examine things on a deeper level and consider any differences in their candidacy like Kawada being arguably the best tag worker ever or Funk having a more relevant post prime and figure out what all that stuff means. Ok, take Satanico for example. I've spent a lot of this project looking at Satanico footage to determine if he's a legit contender for GOAT or just someone I want to be a legit contender for GOAT. I don't have the benefit of 100s of matches from his 80s prime but I'm using the tools that are available to get an overall picture of Satanico as a GOATC. Does he have GOATC longevity, peak, great matches, variety of opponents, versatility, the ability to excel in different settings, etc etc. With Satanico I've tried to examine the full picture to get a sense of his place in something like this. The full Flair picture as been on display for decades and we all know what it is. I get why people are bothered that Flair is constantly put under the microscope and is so heavily scrutinized when other workers aren't. But it isn't happening on the level it does because he's a good barometer for the 95th best worker ever. It happens because he's a good barometer for the 3rd best worker ever, the 4th, 5th whatever. And when you get to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc you're dealing with guys who are going to have a lot of similarities in the broader sense of their overall case. That's why you're going to see the seemingly harsher/nitpicky criticisms of Ric Flair. When it comes to separating #1 from #3, you're going to have to look deeper beneath the broader case that got the guys into contention for GOAT. Sorry for the non-sensical rambling. I got on a roll and I'm very tired so it is possible that I repeated the same thing over and over. If so, my bad. I refuse to proof-read.
