[SPLIT TOPIC] Today's wrestling vs wrestling from the past (From Lawler GWE thread)
This is FAR from an exact science and this should mainly be for fun anyway. When you look at logistics there won't be much difference between say #11 on your list to #63 probably anyway. The Top 10 should of course be extremely important I'd say but after that it's a crapshoot.

When did the IC title nose dive for you?

Don't discount NXT either in this shift as WWE now has their own version of a territory or indie however you look at it and they mix it up plucking guys from the indie scene and their own homegrown guys. I know people that watch it that quit watching indies all together.- [SPLIT TOPIC] Today's wrestling vs wrestling from the past (From Lawler GWE thread)
It's funny how everything has shifted in people's eyes. I can't say much for DVDVR because I don't read it much anymore other than in the lucha forum but I remember all the shit that DVDVR got 2001-04 for overrating the US indies and the fact that it supposedly shits on them now is interesting. A lot of the old guard from that era don't post there no more (or really watch wrestling in general) and there are a lot of posters who obnoxious jerks although not nearly as bad as the F4W board. I freely admit I don't watch a lot of US indies any more because I don't have time to fit it in with other stuff but I still keep up with it and to compare it to the scene pre-ROH is tough because back then you didn't have a lot of overlap between workers. The Northeast guys stayed there, the Midwest guys stayed there, the West Coast guys stayed there, the Southern guys stayed there so every region had their own style. Plus you had high profile guys in all of the regions.....it was a glorious time to be a fan. Another thing was we had a distributor who was so key in exposing everyone to what was going on in my dear friend Wes Hatch. Wes would get shit from everywhere and we would procure from him so he was spreading the gospel while yes you have You Tube today but it's not the same.- What is Workrate? Does Workrate Matter?
Boy that thread has some all-stars Jose Hisa Meltz Brisco Crimson Mask (who was all up in Jack's ass and being a douchebag) Nulty Yohe And that piece of human garbage Tony Smith aka Tony Nelson.- What is Workrate? Does Workrate Matter?
From the classic RSPW FAQ Damn it's been 15 years.....memories- [SPLIT TOPIC] Today's wrestling vs wrestling from the past (From Lawler GWE thread)
And back in the territory system almost every major name toured Japan at least once....very few never went.- [SPLIT TOPIC] Today's wrestling vs wrestling from the past (From Lawler GWE thread)
Back in the territories you either worked a weekly circuit, bi-weekly circuit, or hit one a month shows like WWF so you had to do everything to get crowds every week and yeah they were playing bigger rooms than they are now also they had weekly TV where very few indies have that. Joe has merit to his point as yeah there are guys that bounce around but the days of a regular circuit are over with. Take into consideration what the Memphis loop used to look like Sunday = Jackson, Tennessee and spot shows Monday = Memphis, Tennessee Tuesday = Louisville, Kentucky and spot shows Wednesday = Evansville, Indiana and Nashville, Tennessee Thursday = Lexington, Kentucky and spot shows Friday = Tupelo, Mississippi, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and spot shows Saturday = Nashville, Tennesse and spot shows There is nothing like that these days and it's a shame because the territory system was so valuable for talent to get better plus when they got burnt out somewhere they could go somewhere else and be fresh. Also today you don't have the luxury of guys making a debut somewhere and no one really knowing about them like back then yeah you had the Apter mags and maybe you had cable but say someone like Steve Keirn could go from Florida to Georgia and to Memphis and each new spot he had to be reintroduced with a backstory. I'm not a big fan of comparing eras because of the varying differences involved and this comparison is one of them because these guys today can't help the situation they are forced to work with.- Ric Flair

Will's thoughts reminded me of this Everyone just needs to chill and do as my old friend Anthony Gancarski once said "Just Enjoy It"- What is Workrate? Does Workrate Matter?

Meltz and other voters went on record saying that a big factor for Angle getting in was his legitimacy....especially among the wrestlers that voted. Yeah he was a solid performer but for a guy to get in the HOF after only 5 years of working basically is pretty shaky at best.- Current WWE
Automatic rematches has been a staple in wrestling forever but WWE just started using it more over the last few years.- Current WWE
Yes he was and along with Wilson they were the key people for the Network so that isn't a positive either- Current WWE
One thing I noticed in the WON was that not only are Trips & Steph having issue with Kevin Dunn and his cronies but now George Berrios & Michelle Wilson are trying to pull a power play on them.......WWE Network should definitely do a reality show on the backstage drama.- Ric Flair
- What is Workrate? Does Workrate Matter?
Workrate is a term that comes from boxing many many years ago regarding how active the boxer was in a fight regarding amount of punches thrown etc. Wrestling fans took the term and added more to it but the origins are what they are.- [SPLIT TOPIC] Today's wrestling vs wrestling from the past (From Lawler GWE thread)
Lawler worked Knoxville, GCW, & CWF on top before becoming the King of Memphis so he bounced around. Kobashi was the first AJPW homegrown to become a star and not work anywhere else before it. Meanwhile I've finally gone through this thread for the first time and after the whole standards thread this thread just puts this picture in my mind. Everyone is making the same arguments over and over again and opinions aren't changing because some in this thread are either too closeminded to things or the fact that they are trolling for attention.- Ric Flair
- Ric Flair
- Sting
Believe me....Sting was WAY better as an opponent for Flair than Nikita was. I saw all their matches at The Omni and Nikita was very limited in the early ones and Starrcade 86 while he was better was still not nearly as good as the Sting matches.- Ric Flair
What I'm curious to see with Flair is how people think that his last "full-time" year as a wrestler was because it can be argued that 1998 was the last year and it can also be argued that his run with Evolution was his last "full-time" run although he was still mainly a second even though he held the tag titles and such. Regardless, Flair is going to be a tough one to figure out where he ranks on the greatest list because of various factors and his case kinda resembles the case of Brett Favre when it comes to ranking NFL QB's all-time.- 'Mr. Wonderful' Paul Orndorff
What sucks about Orndorff is when he was probably at his peak as a worker from 1980-83 we don't have enough of a good sampling size to help his case. - [SPLIT TOPIC] Today's wrestling vs wrestling from the past (From Lawler GWE thread)
