[1999-02-24-CMLL Japan] Tsubasa & Oriental vs Ultimo Guerrero & Virus
I think this went way too long. They didn't have the structure or build you need to make a match this long interesting and they just kept running through spots without varying them enough. I was ready for it to be over long before it was. That said, there was definitely some great stuff here. The opening work was great, especially whenever Virus was involved. The guy in red on the opposite team was also great. A couple really good big spots too. Ultimo also hit a great version of his top rope reverse suplex.

[1999-02-22-WWF-Raw] The Undertaker vs Kane
This is my first real memory of wrestling on TV. I was at a neighbor's house and we were flipping through channels and we got to the replay of this on one of the weekend recap shows, probably on a local channel. It somewhat interested me and I had always had vague interest in wrestling and would flip through wrestling magazines in the grocery store etc, but it would still be a couple more months before I actually started watching RAW, mainly because I had no real idea what the shows were or when they were on. Still, this is again just too silly.

NXT Revolution... live as it happens
That entire last segment was just incredible, I can't say enough good things about it. Great match, emotional babyface ending, a LEGITIMATELY emotionally invested crowd and a hot angle. And angry Regal.

I hope none of the women on NXT ever get called up.

[1999-02-21-WCW-Superbrawl IX] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
This was a very basic match worked well to a hot crowd with the blood being some nice icing on the cake. Flair's dirtiest player in the game face comeback is awesome as it often is. The ending angle is just dumb. This is wrestling not knowing when enough is enough. You have two big names, gave them a compelling reason to fight (Flair's promo about Hogan's fame vs. his reputation), built some heat so you know they don't like each other, made the stakes feel important (top heel champion vs. face President of company) and let them have at it. The show did a huge buyrate. THAT WAS ENOUGH. Give them a solid finish and don't make it too complicated and screwy. But of course we had to have a SWERVE ending which my mind says has zero chance of not turning out terribly.

[1999-02-20-WCW-Saturday Night] El Dandy vs Fit Finlay
Will knows what's up. Really fun match. Just a simple but extremely well worked C-show match. It's worth being on the set just for what this match up is on paper alone.

[1999-02-21-WCW-Superbrawl IX] Scott Hall & Kevin Nash vs Konnan & Rey Misterio Jr (Rey's Mask vs Liz's Hair)
Well to start with the good, Rey and Konan's comeback here is pretty great. Good offense from Rey and Nash and Hall bump and sell for him. Rey gets a visual pinfall and the Razor's Edge on Rey looks brutal. But then you get one of the absolutely stupidest things in wrestling history. It's hard to even imagine anyone could believe that taking Rey's mask off is a good move. In fact, I CAN'T believe that anyone could think taking Rey's mask off is a good move, surely this was an attempt to cut him down to size or something?

[1999-02-18-WCW-Thunder] Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko vs Horace & Brian Adams (Cage)
Really good match. I like how little the cage was used throughout the match, just sitting there to serve its gimmick purpose of supposedly preventing interference while they work a regular tag match inside it. Benoit's FIP was really good and he worked in some nice comeback teases, like the backslide and firing off with one chop but being too exhausted to capitalize on it. It's cool how he finally makes his comeback by making use of the tag and Dean and Benoit's double team comeback was good. I was kind of groaning about the interference predictably happening anyway but it was used well to set up the big finish spot with Benoit ending up on the top of the cage just in time to come off with a huge headbutt for the win. Really good tag match that uses the cage sparingly but in some minor (and one big) ways that inhance the match.

[1999-02-18-ARSION-1st Anniversary Show] Mariko Yoshida vs Hiroumi Yagi
This was a really great match. I liked how it starts off right away with Yoshida hitting the air raid crash, Yagi coming back with a German suplex and then transitioning into the match. The interspersed enough pro stuff with the mat work that the mat work didn't really feel like, well, mat work -- it just felt like regular offense that happened to be worked on the mat. Different from a shoot style match and also somewhat different from the way Battlearts does it too. The work was good and there was a lot of cool stuff there. Yoshida gets it trouble for a while with a hurt elbow and Yagi constantly looking for an armbar, and her comeback is well done. I especially like one spot where the goes to pick Yogi up but suddenly switches and pushes her to the mat in a quick pin attempt. This was a great match but somehow personally grabbed me less than some of the other matches on the set. I should probably rewatch it before ranking it on my MOTY list.

[1999-02-15-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair and the NWO
This is really fucking stupid. Maybe it would be less stupid if it weren't so long. But it's really long. First of all what's up with the camera work lately? Those cuts to close ups of Bischoff's and Flair's faces during the limo segment. Then elsewhere you have those weirdly produced Torrie Wilson vignettes, Raven smirking into the camera during that Kanyon segment, other weird camera stuff going on. Give it a rest. The beat down was really lame. Why is there a helicopter involved? Trying to turn pro wrestling into a TV show with a fourth wall just doesn't work. You can't do that where on the same program you have an announce team welcoming you to the beginning of the program, showing you the live audience during the entirety of the program, telling you when they're cutting to commercial, etc.

[1999-02-12-ECW-Crossing the Line Again] Super Crazy vs Yoshihiro Taijiri
I loved this match. I think the time was perfect, they threw out everything, didn't take any time to get to the big offense and didn't draw it out or go too long. This felt like a really unique match, wasn't a normal ECW match, didn't look much like a juniors match, didn't look like a lot of workrate sprints do. They both have unique offense and they used it in interesting ways to create a match that you really feel like you couldn't see anywhere else between anyone else. Incredibly fun stuff.

[1999-02-07-Toryumon-King of Dragon] Great Sasuke vs Magnum Tokyo
Wow, this much exceeded my expectations. This is really a great juniors match. Opening mat stuff was good. Nothing to blow you away but definitely a step or two above the obligatory mat work you often get in the opening of juniors matches. Then we had a quick transition with a big dope from Magnum followed by a huge asai moonsault. Then a series of really great looking and unique table spots. Then they finished it up with an awesome home stretch full of big bombs. Never got ridiculous, just really good big spots. Ending was cool with Magnum connecting with a shooting star but selling he landed badly and hurt his back, so Sasuke followed it up with a senton to the back and a powerbomb for the win. Not many better juniors singles matches have happened since.

Nothing too exceptional really, it was just really boring and dumb. Started off with lame Anonymous GM stuff, segued into lame John Cena stuff and then Rollins lame out for a looong and boring Rollins/Cena promo.

[1999-02-03-GAEA-Premium League Finals] Meiko Satomura vs Toshie Uematsu
A lot of really cool spots in this match. I liked the viciousness of the very beginning. I feel like it could've ended a couple minutes earlier and there were some kind of head scratching moments but it's worth it for the best stuff in this match. Not really any kind of MOTYC for me but a really fun watch.

Great comedy, Vince, Patterson and Brisco are all awesome here. Brisco berating the waitress for not appropriate serving Mr. McMahon from Greenwich Connecticut is the highlight.

1999 MOTY List
Didn't watch Satomura/Nagashima yet. I watched Gannosuke/Oya but didn't really love it. Didn't have much to say other than it was fun with a nice homestretch but didn't really grab me in anyway that'll make me remember it.
