Dave Meltzer stuff
Brookhouse pointing this out on Twitter right now, since White was doing his usual carny b.s. about how much they pay better than boxing: Another random example. Andre Berto made more in one night against Robert Guerrero in November, than Jon Fitch made in seven years of competing inside the UFC -- which includes a main event PPV fight against GSP in 2008.

Things in kayfabe that you can't believe still happens
R. Bruce Tharpe, old Florida announcer and the man behind the new NWA, used to have a promotion named IWF in South Texas. Their champion left after a dispute, so he just made up a story on TV that Chavo Guerrero Sr. defeated the champion "in Mexico". Chavo Sr. came to the promotion, apparently all wasted, defended the title that one time, and then disappeared.

Dave Meltzer stuff
Anyone ever just say you're a fan of lucha libre? Maybe it's a regional thing but in Texas, I've never had anyone give me shit for being a lucha libre fan. All types of people that I've talked to, from different walks of life and ethnicity, seem totally cool and non-judgmental with lucha libre, even if they are non-fans.

MOTYs by year
I love this match so much, one of my top three Memphis matches of the 1980's. I would also have it as my MOTY for 1982. I forgot who it was, but in the DVDVR thread for this match, someone compared it to a big time prizefight.

Daniel Bryan...Danielson
In 2012, I was out of the loop in regards to week-to-week WWE watching (I did watch the PPV's). What are some television matches worth looking out for? Thought Danielson looked really good in his match against Ryback on Friday. Other than the The Shield-Ryback/Kane/Danielson bout in December, it's the best match I've seen Ryback involved in.

Zab Judah Shooting
Realistically, Zab Judah doesn't have much of a shot against Danny Garcia on Saturday night. Yet he's done an awesome job at getting people emotionally invested in the fight. Goes right after Oscar De La Hoya and Garcia's heel manager/father Angel. De La Hoya looks like a little kid that just got reprimanded and embarrassed in front of his friends. "You talk about hooks? I live in Vegas! The hometown of the hookers! I duck 'em and dodge 'em every day!" http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/31949835

What were the details of the story of Los Destructores being considered too dark skin (or not having the 'right look') by the network and having to wear those semi-masks in AAA? I think I first heard this from Sims but maybe pantherwagner, KrisZ, or someone on here knows more details.

Chris Benoit
I read the WON at the time, but wasn't the story there that Shane went loudly along with the "You Sold Out" chants as opposed to him starting them? I honestly don't remember Meltzer crediting him with starting the chants at all.

Speaking of articles like that, anyone remember the name of that website that had those turn of the century articles? Maybe Bix knows, I want to look for a specific article there.

Del Rio's material is some of the worse stuff I've seen from a main event WWE worker in ages. Makes the Sheamus stuff look better by comparison. I don't agree with everything Meltzer has said about this, but I do think he's absolutely right and spot on when he says that WWE has no clue how to script a guy they hope to get over to a Latino audience.

Larry Matysik's 50 Greatest Professional Wrestlers
I never listen to Martin (other than when he shows up on Sherdog round-tables) but I took a listen after your post. I was glad to hear his spirited defense of Rey Misterio Jr. Haven't read the book, but that was a good review from Martin.

Current WWE
Loved the Cena-Punk match. Fantastic stretch at the end. I know some have mentioned the execution but Cena hitting the hurricarana before the finish was something I just totally dug. Felt wild and crazy. Big bombs galore. Loved the piledriver too, shocked when it happened. When was the last time we saw a piledriver in the WWE? I honestly can't remember one since the Austin vs Angle feud in 2001.

What a great thread, thanks for joining the board Boricua. I've never watched Puerto Rico stuff before and this thread finally got me started.

Now that you all mention it, I seem to remember. Must have been in 1996 since he was in the WWF in early 1997. Missed opportunity either way. Miguel Perez Jr., along with El Merenguero (Huracan Castillo, Jr.), was one of the top stars of the Savio Vega-booked era of "WWF Los Super Astros" (half-hour show on Telemundo). That's probably the biggest push Perez Jr. got in the WWF. Merenguero made the most of it, was so charismatic and had a great finish.

Does a match need to go a certain length?
I hate that shit. It seems like ever since Michaels mouthed "I'm sorry, I love you", WWE started having this obsession with heavy verbalizing in some of their big matches. I guess it ties into the whole "self concious epic" stuff. WWE did the same crap with the Jericho vs Punk match at WrestleMania. The camera would get a close-up of Jericho and we could hear him say some very cheesy family insults to try to make Punk DQ himself. Jericho saying "How's your sister?" in the hammiest way possible and Punk's "furious" reaction made both guys look like terrible actors.

Wrestling in Japan (Late 90s-Early 00s)
Since your including the rise of Sakuraba, wouldn't you like to include his downfall against Wanderlei Silva? The key fights being the first two: Kazushi Sakuraba vs Wanderlei Silva (PRIDE 13 3/25/01) Wanderlei Silva vs Kazushi Sakuraba (PRIDE 17 11/3/01) EDIT: What about this fight. Just an idea, not sure if this would be something that would fit your criteria: Kiyoshi Tamura vs Frank Shamrock (Rings - Rise 2nd 4/23/99)

Most Underrated 00's
I don't buy the story. Another thing. Didn't Meltzer at the time report that Randy Orton was scheduled to win the world title at WrestleMania 22 and the only reason Rey got the title was cause of Orton's unprofessional conduct? Right afterwards, Orton put Rey over again on TV and left for his 60 day suspension. Since that time, this "Orton originally scheduled to win the title" narrative hasn't really been mentioned and most just talk about Rey winning the title due to Eddy Guerrero's death.
