Jerry Lawler
Continuing disc one. we have heel Lawler coming out on top with the belt. Hart doesn't really talk a lot here, as he's just started. It skips to the legendary Loser Leaves Town Match #1 where Lawler is a face and Dundee has turned heel and joined Hart. Everyone knows this match. It's fucking awesome. It's #2 on my best match ever list. I don't really need to go into it, as I'm sure everyone's seen it but watch it again. It's good for you. They cover all the cool shit where Hart figures out a way to bring Dundee back, highlighted by a giant get together of all the heels in the First Family including young Jimmy Cornette in his sailor hat. There's a great Lawler/ Dundee match here that's not from Memphis or Louisville. It's a typical match between the two, which is high fucking praise. Then they get into Dundee's face turn, as he loses to Lawler in Memphis thanks to some mis-timed Hart interference with a chain. Hart's pissed and fires both Dundee and Plowboy Frazier from the family, because they lost their matches. He makes an exception for Ken Patera. Disc one done. Man, I've never really seen much of Lawler as a heel from the Seventies and he's just fucking amazing.

[1990-01-19-NWA-Power Hour] Arn Anderson vs Buzz Sawyer
That leapfrog into a Mad Dog power slam was sick. I loved this, it's two of my favorite guys ever. Cornette and Ross really were great together. Everything about "Mad Dog" Buzz Sawyer is awesome. His name alone is one of the best ever, a cool nickname AND a cool fake name. I love the crazed giggling, and he looks legit insane. Only thing missing are the big fuzzy boots.

Having trouble getting through the AWA set?
I'm from the Jersey Shore, I currently live in Colorado. Yes, it's the same Jersey Shore as the show, however that show is set in Seaside Heights, which is a town well known for attracting thousands of Long Island guidos every Summer who come down, rent a house for a week or two, and act like incredible douchebags. Those of us who lived down there avoided Seaside Heights like the plague during the Summer. And Dylan, that's me hosting The Polar Plunge Event at Nederland CO'S Annual Frozen Dead Guy Days, which I'll be doing again in a month. http://frozendeadguydays.org/ http://frozendeadguydays.org/aboutfdgd

Having trouble getting through the AWA set?
Born in Kentucky, and the Jersey Shore I'm from, Waretown, IS South Jersey, motherfuckah. On a typical Saturday night we'd all take a walk down to Albert Music Hall for some down home music and neighborhood camaraderie. If that ain't Southern, then I don't know what is.

[1990-01-06-NWA-Power Hour] Arn Anderson vs Great Muta
This was a blast. And I thought I heard Ross say "Are there any good looking Orientals out here". Cause they went on to talk about how everyone out there was ugly, and used that as a bash at the WWF with the whole, "They're not here to pose!" I love Ross and Cornette as an announce team. Arn as a "No quit in me" babyface rules. God, I love Buzz Sawyer.

It's not only the only time you've seen it done, you actually have never seen it done, because that's not what was done, professor. Yes, because most right wing Americans are Satan worshipers who beat up the mentally challenged. Sure, there's Bill O'Reilly but not all.

[1990-01-07-NWA-Main Event] Ric Flair vs Bobby Eaton
Now here we fucking go. Great match and definitely the best one so far on the set. I've never seen this before and hot shit, this rules. I fucking cringed and went "Ah, Jesus!" when Bobby took that backdrop on the concrete. Lance just makes it all even better. Known fact, Lance Russell makes EVERYTHING better.

[1990-01-07-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri
I imagine there's gonna be a lot of WWF stuff on this set that I'm gonna turn around on. Like I've said before, I wasn't watching wrestling anymore really during 1990 and when I did it was usually WCW. I'd occasionally turn on the WWF if I was flipping around on a Saturday afternoon, though, and inevitably something would come on that was just too WWF cartoony that annoyed me. Macho King is something I've turned around on. Savage just may be my favorite wrestler ever, and at the time I thought it sucked, but I was very wrong. He rules here. (I did happen to see how he cost Warrior the belt on some Saturday show back then, and I loved that. Warrior was one of the guys that made me stop watching back then.)

[1990-01-06-NWA-Worldwide] Norman the Lunatic and Woman
I have so much love for Norman. I wasn't watching a lot of wrestling in 1990, but I would watch some WCW here and there because of the Saturday night show and Clashes. I was living with my Dad at the time, and while he didn't hate wrestling, he certainly didn't watch it. When Norman The Lunatic first appeared on a show, I remember Dad putting down his paper and saying, "What the fuck? Norman the Lunatic?" and laughing his ass off. Whenever Norman would be on he'd watch, as he thought it was fucking hilarious. I thought it was funny as well, so we had a "Field Of Dreams" ball toss via Norman The Fucking Lunatic. For years later he'd ask me if Norman was still around, "Hey, how's Norman doing?" About 8 years later Dad was sponsoring in AA a total nutcase. (my Dad always takes on the so called hopeless ones). This guy wasn't just a drunk, but he was crazier than a shithouse rat. His name? Norman, of course...and Dad immediately gave him the nickname Norman The Lunatic.

Top Ten U.S. All Time
There isn't the same emphasis on mic work and promos in lucha that there is in US wrestling and when they do run angles they're often quite confusing. All you need to know is that these guys are the rudos, these guys are the technicos, these two are being programmed with each other and they're going to have either a title match or a wager match. It's not that different from the Memphis you enjoy; just substitute a loser leaves town match for a hair or mask match and you'll find that they might as well have been from the same mother. Once you're familiar with how a rudo or a technico generally behave, you'll find that you don't need a lot of backstory because the importance of the wager match is self-evident. After a while, you should be able to watch a hair match without any of the build and get it. I get the whole Rudos and Technicos deal, and the wager matches I've seen I've enjoyed because I immediately know what's going on. I'm not a complete novice. I just like to know the more intimate details. The history of the feuds, that kind of thing. I kind of want to know what the announcers are saying. It's not a knock on Lucha, it's not like I want subtitles. (Now, Iron Chef style dubbed voices would be a hoot. ) I just want to know all the details as to why guys are fighting. It can be as simple as "It's a young rookie getting a shot at a big name" and I'm happy.

[1990-01-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Dustin Rhodes and Gary Young promos
I've never seen Dustin doing promos like Dusty from back then. God, that must've eaten at him, huh? Lawler's awesome here. I love Young's promo. Can you imagine the outrage and hand wringing that'd go on if someone did that promo now? I loved it, even if he looks more like a pedophile than the actual Ronald McDonald.
