  4. I'm amazed with everybody that is running a big promotion that runs shows daily. Great job.
  5. I picked up the CZW streaming service the other day. The most recent show is the Tournament of Death (from two weeks ago) and that's not my thing. Although they don't seem to be as shitty as I remembered. Going back to shows from earlier this year and the roster is pretty solid guys with unique matches. Nick Gage vs Drew Gulak was pretty good and I had never seen Gulak in a wild brawl before. Looking forward to going through the archive. Last year AJ Styles faced Drew Gulak in a main event, can't wait for that!
  6. If you are on the fence about trading with me, take a look at the Canada Cup show to see how I treat imports. Slaughter goes to the finals. Bret Hart to the second round and Andre the Giant beating Killer Khan!
  7. After the roaring success of the Canada Cup, Jack Tunney has confirmed that it will return in 1984 with the finals taking place on Canada Day in Exhibition Stadium! Also, check out Wrestling Night in Canada on Sunday nights to see the fallout of the big show.
  8. Martel. Best banyface in the business. Lawler, vest wrestler who can play every role. Bockwinkel. Great wrestler who can tour ad champ.
  9. Thanks everybody for the feedback! Midget title match is signed for Maple Leaf Gardens on July 26th! Martel is the man and will be the ace here, plus he will defend the title all across North America. The reason the Cup was not destroyed is because the Canada Cup will be an annual tournament like the Championship Carnival. Wahoo will be looking for revenge and the blood will spill between Valentine and Wahoo.
  10. Maple Leaf Wrestling presents Canada Day Super Show: The Canada Cup July 1, 1983 at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, Ontario The show opens with the playing of the Canadian national anthem. 1. Little Tokyo & Tiny Anderson vs Cowboy Lang & Tiger Jackson A high energy match to pump up the crowd at the beginning of the show. Little Tokyo and Tiny Anderson cheat to gain advantage through out. In the end Tiger Jackson pins the NWA World Minis Champion (Tokyo) with a flying cross body from the top rope. Winners - Cowboy Lang & Tiger Jackson @ 8:23 Billy Red Lyons introduces Maple Leaf Wrestling President Jack Tunney and former NWA World Champion Gene Kiniski. They bring out the NWA Canadian Title and the Canada Cup. The rules are laid out for NWA Maple Leaf Wrestling. You can win by pinfall, submission, DQ or by a 10-count out on the floor. Matches have a 30 minute time limit, except in the first round of the tournament where it is 15 minutes. 2. Canada Cup First Round (NWA Canadian Title Tournament) Sgt. Slaughter vs "Big" Stephen Petipas Petipas does it best and gets a nice nearfall near the end with a body press. However Slaughter gets the win with the Slaughter Cannon as he is clearly the more established wrestler. Petipas kept fighting though and gave Slaughter a tough challenge. Winner - Sgt. Slaughter @ 12:17 3. Canada Cup First Round (NWA Canadian Title Tournament) Bret Hart vs Jesse "The Body" Ventura Hart gets a little shine sequence to start the match, before Ventura uses his power to gain the advantage. After a few minutes of poses and power moves Bret plays possum and rolls up Ventura for the upset win. Winner - Bret Hart @ 4:53 After the match Jesse throws a few chairs around and leaves to the back looking shameful. 4. Canada Cup First Round (NWA Canadian Title Tournament) Greg "The Hammer" Valentine vs Wahoo McDaniel A brutal slugfest between these two hard hitters. Midway through the contest Don Carson came to ringside. Wahoo does his comeback war dance, but is tripped up by Carson which leads to Valentine dropping the Hammer elbow for the win. Winner - Greg Valentine @ 14:23 Wahoo is pissed and goes to attack Carson post match. Valentine, however, grabs a chair and nails Wahoo from behind knocking him out as Valentine and Carson leave together. 5. Canada Cup First Round (NWA Canadian Title Tournament) "The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff vs Rick Martel This was a fast and furious match worked at a break neck speed. Back and forth quick action leading to Martel winning with a slingshot splash. Winner - Rick Martel @ 9:32 Bobby Bass, who is smoking a Cuban cigar, The Cuban Aassassin and Chicky Starr come to the ring to salsa music. 6. Bobby Bass & Cuban Assassin & Chicky Starr vs Leo Burke & Rocky Johnson & Ben Bassarab An old school southern tag match with the Cuban team cheating all the way, lead by Bass' antics. The Canadians were clearly the better team, but Bass hits Bassarab with a mariachi behind the referee's back for the win. Winners - Bobby Bass & Cuban Assassin & Chicky Starr @ 12:35 7. Canada Cup Semi-Final (NWA Canadian Title Tournament) Sgt. Slaughter vs Bret Hart Bret tries to put up a strong contest, but Slaughter is just too much and he gets the win with the Cobra Clutch to advance to the finals of the Canada Cup. Winner - Sgt. Slaughter @ 6:03 Greg Valentine comes to the ring with Don Carson. Billy Red Lyons confronts Carson to ask what is going on and in response Carson pulls out a manager's license that was signed by Jack Tunney earlier today. Don Carson is officially Valentine's manager. 8. Canada Cup Semi-Final (NWA Canadian Title Tournament) Greg "The Hammer" Valentine w/ Don Carson vs Rick Martel Valentine goes straight to working on Marel's leg and that is his focus for the match. Martiel fights valiantly from underneath on one leg. At one point they get to the outside and Martel is thrown into the ring post and busted open. The match seems all Valentine, since Martel's leg is in bad shape and he is bleeding but Martel gets a roll up when Valentine goes for a figure-four leglock which gains him a three count and a spot in the finals of the Canada Cup! Winner - Rick Martel @ 21:02 9. Killer Khan vs Andre the Giant These two goliaths go at it in a similar contest to their one from New Japan a year prior. Andre picks up the win after a huge splash. Winner - Andre the Giant @ 16:21 10. Canada Cup Final (NWA Canadian Title Tournament) Sgt. Slaughter vs Rick Martel Martel enters the match with a badly injured leg and his head wrapped up from the earlier bleeding. This is your classic babyface vs heel match with the heel having a big advantage. Slaughter works the cut and rips off the bandages which gets the blood flowing again. He works a little on the leg, but mostly focuses on the neck to set up the Cobra Clutch. Martel takes every advantage he has to attack Slaughter's back. Late in the contest Slaughter hits the Slaughter Cannon, but Martel gets his leg on the ropes. Slaughter goes for the Cannon again, but Martel ducks and Slaughter bumps huge to the floor. This leads to Martel's comeback and him getting the win with the Boston Crab. Winner - Rick Martel @ 23:12 Rick Martel wins the Canada Cup and the NWA Canadian Title Legendary former NWA World Champion Gene Kiniski and Maple Leaf Wrestling President Jack Tunny present Rick Martel with the Canada Cup and the NWA Canadian Title. As photos are snapped, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair crashes the party. He talks about seeing some great wrestling tonight, but notes that the Canadian Title and Maple Leaf Wrestling is nothing compared to American wrestling and the home of the United States Title Jim Crocket Promotions. Ric Flair promises to return on July 26 in Maple Leaf Gardens with 4 of his American wrestling friends and he will show Canadian wrestling fans what true wrestling really is. At this point he slaps Rick Martel as security separates them. Upcoming July 11 @ Halifax Forum featuring round robin tournament for the NWA Canadian Tag Team Titles including: Rick Martel/Tony Garea, Ivan Koloff/Alexis Smirnoff & Leo Burke/Stephen Petipas July 18 @ Oshawa Civic Auditorium featuring the minis July 26 @ Maple Leaf Gardens featuring Ric Flair and his four American wrestling friends and the minis
  11. Where should I post my show tomorrow?
  12. Grimmas replied to dawho5's topic in The Archives
Toronto referees or did they just use Crockett guys as well?
  13. Jack Tunney, speaking for all Canadian promotions, are not happy with terms like that.
  14. Double crosses will happen, but who will be the best at handling them?
  15. I still don't understand how he can be a judge. Because he had a standout legal career (teaching at three of the best law schools in the US, District Court of DC Judge which is a highly prestigious position). And, like WingedEagle said, he's a genius, like him or not. You can't vote for citizens united and say that same sex marriage is an attack on democracy. It's just wrong.

He'll be in my top ten.

Obviously some people have a different idea on what makes a wrestler great than you do.
  18. Grimmas replied to Grimmas's topic in Nominees
Tim mentioned that he would consider putting Honky on his bottom 100 and so I thought he was worth a nominee. He was an amazing seller and did great at commanding a crowd and making them hate him. The Blonde Bombers stuff was great.

I really do see these as lazy criticisms. Go and watch that match from Starrcade 88 where the finish is Luger buckling under Flair's weight because his legs are so fucked up he can't stand. Watch closely everything from the transition to the home straight and see how laser-like Flair's focus is on the leg. Psychology is amazing. Now watch the Morton match I listed above where Morton comes in with the nose injury and count how many times Flair deviates from the core game of attacking the injured nose. It's just such a lazy misnomer of a criticism. But ALSO even if it was true, there's no great crime in switching from an arm to a leg and if there is I am going to harp on it till kingdom come in every Kawada, Misawa and Kobashi match we have left to watch and ask you to justify why they they switched limbs or from the back to the arm or whatever. The idea that you work one part and one part alone is just one way of telling the story. Even the Andersons would switch up limbs. I'm not saying this against you in particular Steven, but it's just really lazy criticism that doesn't bear up to any sort of scrutiny. "Ah but I'm talking about Flair in 2004!!" Well fuck Flair in 2004. What difference does it make? Anything great after 1991 is a bonus. And he has more of that than most people have in their actual cases. I just don't get it beyond "well Flair's the boring choice and I want to be different", which is what it boils down to. I'm not getting into it again beyond this post, said it too many times in too many places, but stuff you're coming out is some Scott Keith level stuff. It's not that it always sucks. It's not that Flair doesn't make it work in a lot of matches. It's not that it works a lot of times. We are talking the greatest ever here. When I am watching Ric Flair I often feel he is dumb and just doing things out there. I don't get that with the other 9 mentioned. Do the other 9 do dumb things? Of course. With those other 9 it feels like mistakes. Flair just feels dumb. The working limb was just an example of it. It might be a bias, it might be that I didn't grow up with Flair. It might be that he annoys me so much when he is out of character, but those bias I can not fight. Again, easy top 10, probably top 3 for me.

Everybody knows I'm not huge on Flair. Here is the deal. He's been in more great matches than anyone. He's greatly athletic, super charismatic, one of the greatest sellers and can make everything exciting. For those reasons he will be top 10 for me easily. What keeps him from the easy spot of number one is the fact I find him a dim wrestler. He would do some great arm work, then move on to leg work for no reason. He would always try to get his spots in, whether it made sense or not. This things were not an issue when he was super athlete at the prime of his game, but they became HUGE flaws when he got older. Overall two or if not all of these guys will be above him on my final poll: Stan Hansen, Terry Funk, Jerry Lawler, Jumbo Tsuruta, Toshiaki Kawada, Rey Mysterio Jr. Negro Casas, Bret Hart and Jushin Liger.
  22. Also same thing (minus MSG/Winnipeg) for the rest of the Maple Leaf roster.
