Cui bono? I mean Punk not working a Chicago PPV (that does not really have an announced card four days before the event) seems to be a worst case scenario for AEW.

BTW, I made the mistake to listen to Cornette's opinion on the whole thing and of course it's something along the lines of "people get guzzled (sp?) in wrestling all the time, just fire the jobber, the veteran knows what he is doing". To show how deep in the old-school wrestling bubble he is stuck at, Corny was surprised that Brian Last never had to "guzzle" someone in his regular daily life.

One thing that needs to be cleared up is how the glass spot got a go-ahead. I think it's very unlikely that this spot was something Perry did all himself. Considering all the drama about the glass thing beforehand I find it hard to believe that the limousine was there for any purpose but for that glass spot. And if that's the case that's more than just a thing between two wrestlers and an agent. I would not be surprised if TK himself gave the go-ahead for that thing.

AEW All In Wembley - 8/27 - Bruv, This Has All The Makings
Is there a worse singer than Jericho who has performed in front of such a big crowd? And I also agree with the sentiments: the layout and pacing of the show was great. The trios title match was probably the "worst" match of the show, but it was designed to be a cooldown match and it fulfilled that purpose and got some nice pops in the end as well. The main event was not my style of wrestling (and I don't care for Adam Cole anyway), but I guess I have to learn with such matches in 2023 mainstream wrestling. I can't decide which was the stupidest bump of the night: the "real glass" one on the pre-show, the coffin drop on the coffin or MJF's bump to the edge of the stairs in the main event. Regarding JR: he sucks and should not be on TV / PPVs, true, but at least he speaks in such a low-key manner nowadays that it's easy to tune him out.

WWE TV 08/21 - 08/27 OG Dragon Ball is peak action adventure stuff
I am with you here, I paid a bit extra attention on Cole's commentary during Summerslam and he did not sound any different than he did a decade or whatever ago.

AEW TV - 8/23 - 8/26 - Visa Issues Kept This From Being Made On Time
That still only amounts to less than two matches a week, a lot of them being tag team or multi man matches. That's not that bad, I would assume.

RIP Terry Funk
As long as there is pro wrestling on this planet, Terry Funk will never truly die. You know that quote (that seems to be attributed to Ernest Hemingway): Here my favorite Terry Funk promo, I love Hugo's facial expression ("you are getting us all killed").

AEW TV (8/16 - 8/19)
At the very least they should suspend him until the matter is settled and in case of a conviction (incl. the case of a no-contest settlement, Wheeler is not someone who cannot financially afford this to go to trial) send him on his merry ways. On the lighter side, let's see if they give Max Caster free rein to rap about this. Also considering that Wheeler is not allowed to carry any weapons, the Bucks should try to hand him a chair or something like that and then demand for him to be arrested.

[2004-08-07-ROH-Testing the Limit] Bryan Danielson vs Austin Aries (2/3 falls)
Danielson has claimed that the initial idea of the match was to go 2:45 (sic!) or something like that, with the first two falls ending as 60 minute time limit draws and Aries winning the final fall. Half-an-hour in they realized that this was not going to work and cut the match down to 75 minutes. The story sounds insane, but Danielson in general is not really a bullshitter so it may be true. That said, the final fall of the Survival of the Fittest tournament was definitely superior to this match.

WWF announcing debate mega-thread
I was paying a bit attention during Summerslam at what Michael Cole was saying and he sounded about as human as wrestling announcers did in late 90ies wrestling video games. A barely trained AI language model has better chances in passing a Turing test than this Cole does. And considering that Vince AFAIK is not around shows lately, you cannot blame that on him.

SAMS Ragtag Yearbook 1981
You have labeled the matches with "1980", force of habit, I guess.

The Beginner's Guide To British Wrestling
At least in the 90ies CWA also provided (sold? - or maybe the TV station filmed their own material) clipped stuff (usually from the Heumarkt, IIRC) to Austrian TV ("ORF") where it was shown in Sunday afternoon potpourri blocks (in a very non-serious way).

Dark Side of the Ring
This. A couple of years ago I wanted to go through 98+99 WWF (as this is a period where WWF was off-the-air over here and even when they finally found a new station I rarely watched it) and man did the quality of the shows fell off a cliff in mid 98 when that angle started.

AEW TV - 7/19 - 7/22 - Guts and Blood
According to cagematch, they had two televised singles matches (Smackdown September 14th, 2010 and Smackdown October 25th, 2011) plus three house show matches during a UK tour in September 2010.

WWE TV - 7/17 - 7/21 - Three Men Stand In My Way, Three Men Get Dropped
I don't know, he does not fit the blueprint of the latinos they hired in the last couple of years - mostly relatively young but quite experienced, good-looking guys. Dom definitely had no experience when he was hired (besides being trained by I think Lance Storm) and I might be off here, but at least to me he does not seem to be particularly dashing.

WWE TV - 7/17 - 7/21 - Three Men Stand In My Way, Three Men Get Dropped
If he had a different name he would have never been hired. Considering the changed hiring policy, it's questionable if he would even had got hired if would have done great on the indies.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 4
What a pity that the Twitter account "Is Teddy Hart in Jail" shut down.

Melodrama in Wrestling
Melodrama in wrestling works when it is done "with the crowd" instead of "in front of the audience". Negative examples for the second thing would be the obvious "I am sorry, I love you" but also the stuff that kicked-off the whole Bloodline angle between Roman and Jey. That empty arena matches had me shout "for the love of it, please shut up and wrestle". Doing multi-minute mono- or dialogues during the match without any direct crowd response was hard to endure for me. EDIT: thinking about it, the Funk vs. Lawler empty arena match might be an exception to my rule, but that is because Terry Funk is one of (if not) the greatest of all time.

The One-Offs of New Japan World
I could make a joke about boxing being mostly a work anyway but in seriousness, in martial arts usually exhibitions are an important part of the sport. For example I did Judo as a kid, and there when we presented our sport in front of our parents, at fairs etc. we did technical displays of the whole group on the one hand, but on the other hand there often were one or two worked matches between some of the top students. They usually got instructions like "do a nice technical match showing some cool stuff and decide among yourselves who is going over". BTW: audience-wise the biggest tournament of the year was the club tournament because there usually the parents of all children were there. They mostly reacted respectfully clapping for the victors etc., but a couple of times a night a big throw popped the audience. I managed to get that big pop twice, once for a Harai Goshi (my favorite throw, actually, that always worked perfectly against lesser experienced kids who reacted on attack attempts by simply trying to block), the other time for an Osoto Guruma (where I got Rock Bottom-like height).

All Elite Wrestling
I am still on the fence regarding going to the show. Flights still are pretty cheap (roundtrips are in the 120 to 170 Euro range), and there still seem to be decent but affordable tickets available. The date itself would also be fine (I have vacation the week before and the one after). Thing only is, I am lazy. ;-) (also, I suppose London in August is not the best time for tourist stuff)

Not that I don't agree that WWE will very likely not run Wrestlemania outside of North America (or at least not in Europe, the Saudis might be crazy enough to spend nine-figures on a Mania) within the next 10 years, but they went public 24 years ago and have done A LOT of things where bragging rights went over making money (the whole booking of the Invasion, for one). Endeavor taking over should change things, obviously.

People who only had one match in a company?
You have a guy who is known for having a gambling problem jobbing in a promotion where a significant portion of the audience probably was missing a pinky, what's so weird about that?

People who only had one match in a company?
Luger did a single TNA match (teaming with Jarrett against Sting & AJ Styles in 2003)
