HHH taking over from Vince on RAW
In-house training alone is not enough. If you take a talented guy and train him for five years in Florida he probably would not be good enough as someone who just spent the first and last year in Florida and the remaining time travels all around the world wrestling with different people doing different styles. To rephrase it: I don't think Bryan Danielson would be anything close what he is today if he spent 2001-2009 in OVW, Deep South and FCW.

[1996-11-18-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin vs Mankind
Maybe depushed isn't the right word. Less in focus might be more accurate. In 96 he was in the long feud with Taker, which was one of the top programs of the year, plus had the IYH main event with Michaels. In the first half of 97 he only had the Taker IYH main event, which was more about Taker and Bearer. Apart from that he was pretty invisible until the 3 faces of Foley thing and the Triple H feud. Or at least that is how I remember it.

[1996-11-18-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin vs Mankind
Foley was in such a great physical shape at that point of his career. Strange how de-pushed he got in 97.

1980s Wrestling Party #11
Usually these things are too late for me (living in Europe). Today when I came home from work I wanted to download #10 and was surprised to see that there was a show live at that time. Anyway I really like to listen to these shows because they motivate we to continue watching now instead of putting it on the shelve.

WON HoF Candidate Poll Thread
Seriously? I would see that actually the other way around. I feel that Shamrock has a clear edge on the MMA side but his pro wrestling success was not on par with Lesnar's success. He was the #3 or #4 guy in PWFG for two years and in WWF had the rank for about half a year or so. Afterwards he was just a midcarder. Lesnar was one of the top two guys in WWE for 18 months or so and headlined a Wrestlemania (one that didn't draw well but that is still far better than any Shamrock main event).

WON HoF Candidate Poll Thread
If being famous is a killer criteria for being in then I would guess there are several people worldwide which are not seriously considered Hall of Fame material. Otto Wanz would be one such name. He was a great self promoter who knew how be present in the media. I would assume every Austrian over the age of about 25 to 30 would know who he is. By the way: I would really like someone to make a depper analysis of pro wrestling on the continental part of Europe. If you look at the WON HOF ballot you would think that it just did not exist (Hoffmann is one because he wrestled in Japan and the US, otherwise he would just be ignored), but for example my father (who does not care about pro wrestling at all) can easily name 5 Austrian pro wrestling stars from the 50ies and 60ies, so it wasn't just around but had to be pretty big.

What are you watching?
I am currently going through WWF 1997 and the stuff so far is so hit and miss that is not even funny. For example yesterday I was watching the Feb. 24th Raw (ECW invasion episode). I guess most of the roster was touring Germany at that time and they had to fill the two hour time slot with a very thin roster. This gave us not just the surreal ECW invasion (who promoted Barely Legal in this show much better than WWF did with Wrestlemania) but they also booked a Sunny vs. Marlena arm wrestling contest without any backstory. Marlena no-selling the stretcher job (after the attack from Chyna) a week before was funny too.

Dave Meltzer stuff
Is Dave's math bad? I certainly don't get that impression when listening to the podcast and he pulls some quick mental arithmetic when calculating, say, percentage changes. Bryan, on the other hand, seems to struggle with anything like that. I think I read quite a lot of complaints regarding the Hall of Fame voting (or rather the scoring) which is often simplified as "Dave's math sucks". But yes, I agree. Dave seems to be pretty good in mental arithmetic.

My calculation above should indicate that 241 posts out of 2412 are about 10% and not 1%...

Dave Meltzer stuff
Your post was the 2412th in the thread. Why don't you let us know how many of those have been about the current Dave-Dana issue? It would take 241 of them to reach a 1% threshold. John 241/2412 * 100 = ?And people are complaining about Dave's math.

Brock is back
ECW also won two "Best Major Wrestling Show" awards (in 98 and 99), should that count too for Heyman? And I guess "Worst" awards won't count anyway, right? (December to Dismember)

Extreme Rules
The question is not if Lesnar is willing to do a job or not but if he insists (or suggests) on doing it and the booking team / Vince takes that into consideration when booking the result of last night's PPV main event.
-
Extreme Rules
Point 6 sounds ridiculous. Point 4+5 might work under the right circumstances, but I don't think last nights finish can be compared in the least with getting caught with a flash kneebar submission. Lesnar lost a WWE gimmick match in WWE blow-off fashion. There are other things not fitting this idea too: if somehow they make this story work they will have a (second) blow-off match which according to that story would be all about Lesnar, who would leave the WWE after that match. That would mean that they would put themselves in the same corner that they did with this years WM main event.

Extreme Rules
They began Lesnar's PPV run with the blow-off match, this is Russo-booking 101. When has this ever worked in pro wrestling history? I cannot accept the finish as Lesnar slipping on a banana peel. Cena transitioned into offense using a chain shot and beat Lesnar with an AA on a gimmick. This is standard WWE gimmick match finish and not one guy being lucky. I mean I can see several possible reason for them putting Cena over: (1) They are afraid Lesnar will pull out of the deal sooner or later so get someone beating Lesnar while he is here. (2) They did not want to have Cena lose in two big PPV main events in a row. (3) Everybody expected Lesnar going over, so they did the opposite. To me only (1) is a valid reason for this finish.

2002 Recommendations
Goldberg wrestling for All Japan was a big deal back in 02, so I would add at least one of his squashes (vs. Kea and vs. Kojima). Furthermore you are missing the July Tenryu vs. Kojima match, which was easily the best AJ match of that year.

2011 Observer Hall of Fame thread
Is there any reason that continental Europe is basically ignored other than Dave not knowing much about its history? I mean if Big Daddy is on the list is there any reason why Wanz shouldn't be too?

Dave Meltzer stuff
Today's repost of a 94 newsletter contains a great satirical rant. Somebody wrote a letter asking "Is it true that The Ultimate Warrior died from a heart attack three years ago and that the WWF found a look-alike to replace the original?" Dave's reply contained such gems as "I think that Warrior rumor got started when someone played the album 'Bad Street USA' backwards and heard Michael Hayes say, 'Buddy is dead. I buried Buddy.'" and "I think people just assumed Ultimate Warrior died when they would regularly overhear WWF officials in 1990 when he had the title phoning the office after house shows saying, 'You should have seen the house tonight. Warrior is dead.' Either that or he was the only one bare-footed in photos for the 1991 Official WWF Calendar."
