I don't all the way agree that just because the feud doesn't work, the match being ranked lowly is perfectly valid. However, I think my annoyance with the Garvin issue is the inconsistency of ranking stuff like that. Shawn Michaels 1996 title run was a failure from a box office perspective across the board. Yet, the same folks that rank that Starrcade 87 match poorly in due part because Garvin isn't seen as a believable champion also will rate Mind Games near *****. -
Me, Loss and Parv all have it at ****+, I don't know where Shoe/KrisZ weigh in but I know from reading the 80's discussion, it has a big following.

. #16. was Atlantis vs. Satanico (1984), which I gave **** to. My buddy Chad gave that one the full *****. I have little memory of it to be honest. I still like this match a lot but I have watched probably four times since my initial rating and now would be in the ****1/2 range. It didn't even make my top 100 matches because it has dropped ever so slightly. I still think it is a masterful performance by Satanico but do think Atlantis could have shown some more fire in spots.

Bock seemed like a bigger oversight with not having an entry over Satanico.

I think impressions can certainly taint your view and project your expectations going into things. It can be a prickly path that is constantly something I try not to over influence me to this day.I also don't see it as just an issue of when I first came online and heard about all of these foreign wrestlers and the talent before my time. For instance, if I watch a random yearbook match without any context and without reading the reviews, I watch the match as a whole and assert my opinion. However, if I see something like Sheik/Abby vs. Funks with the assertion that Parv called the Sheik's cheating as a magnum opus of that genre, I am really ingrained in paying attention into what he is doing and how that holds up. That can lead to disappointment to a degree in the case of the 1978 match, however this mindset can also lead to new discoveries and confirmation of something that was asserted by someone else. Bigelow34 praised the Masters vs. Michaels match from Unforgiven 2005 and that intrigued me since I liked Masters a good deal when he became the C-show superworker. I went back and watched the match and found not only Masters giving a great performance focusing on the back of HBK and finding neat variations to lock on the Masterlock, but also HBK doing a really solid sell job and him getting over the underneath talent like Masters as someone on his level. Being as plugged in as I am to this message board it is tough to ignore the norm sometimes like Parv loves Flair, Matt loves Bock, Dylan loves southern indies etc and not have that creep into my mind when watching certain stuff.

I've been a big Shawn fan this year but this was his worst performance yet and the luster was really lost throughout this match. Cornette and Lothario are practically non factors and don't have any fun interactions with each other. Vader does get the win but it feels too late to salvage all of this. *1/2

Action was ok here but Im not sure how strong this made Austin look at this point in his push. Lawler had some funny one liners and JR was annoyed on commentary. I did pop for the Robert ALomar line. Austin stuns Jake with an assist from Lawler. The promo with Mankind and Bearer was good and disturbing in the graveyard.

Great, great, great match. I agree with Pete in that while this was worked with a really fast pace, it didn't feel like a spotfest and told a good, cohesive story. Ito hitting those double stomps were brutal and it really felt like someone having to bust out everything in their arsenal to put the big ace away. Yoshida feels like she can hang now and I loved the ARSION touches that were sprinkled throughout. The finish here was also great as it felt definitive and made me want to see more of the makeshift team of Shimoda and Toyoto. ****1/4

This wasn't great like some of the other 6 mans we have seen but it was good to really good in most of its parts. Asako striking Kawada and him giving back an "are you serious bro" look was great. Akiyama and Kawada was the main focal point and this was a good chapter in the evolution of the Akiyama story. I thought Misawa was fine here especially when him and Kawada squared off and he took the powerbomb. I found this to be really enjoyable. ***1/4

This does seem like a weird critique Parv as an easy comparison to point to that shows that lucha is still pretty low on the discussion metric is to look at the DVDVR 80's poll. I can't exactly remember when the board crashed but even something like AWA, which has been lambasted historically as one of the worst territories had double the ballots. Ourselves were included in the AWA ballot but not the lucha one. I think great lucha is seen as canon and recognized as such. No one has come out as strongly against Azteca vs. Dandy as you have but on most of the other stuff, you have seemed to be fairly aligned to the most highly pimped stuff. Lucha really feels like an unknown. Besides what Matt digs up on youtube, the early 2000's up to Mistico feel like a goldmine of stuff that is sitting on Lynch tape lists but I haven't heard any discussion on.

Sometimes you just want to watch two dudes beat the shit out of each other. THis was a great struggle match that you would expect from these two. I have no idea what my favorite match between these two is, but this is certainly up there. Ikeda looked dominant here but Ishikawa is able to find a reversal or escape out of everything. The finish really played into that point by Ishikawa finally not being able to find a solution and he has to tap as a result. Beautiful, gritty wrestling. ****1/2
