[1999-08-09-WWF-Raw] Countdown to the Millenium
We are only 90 minutes away at this point. I was at a Braves game this night and watched a tv from the chophouse of this show.

[1999-08-09-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan & Sting & Goldberg vs Kevin Nash & Sid & Rick Steiner
This was certainly a dip back in nostalgia but it was a ton of fun for the time period and again a big step up from the utter shit we have seen a couple of months prior. I remember buying Road WIld and being fairly into the product overall until Russo/Bischoff turned me off essentially for good. Hogan/Goldberg/Sting feel like a powerhouse trio and it works well to tease the big matches at the PPV. **3/4

[1996-09-26-ECW-TV] FBI and the Gangstas
I thought this was ok but not hilarious. We did get to see a Gangsta beatdown that in Joey's mind would make 2Pac proud.

[1996-09-25-RINGS] Volk Han vs Kiyoshi Tamura
11 minutes of some of the best, most aggressive wrestling I have ever seen. The reversals and fighting for the leg locks and arm bars were amazing. Tamura struggling out and trying desperately to reach the ropes. Even the finish is insanely dramatic as Tamura is just grasping for anything that can turn the tide but Han has finally been able to totally neutralize him and he is forced to tap. These are two masters and they give a master class performance in this match. SHoot style is something that I have really been gaining an appreciation for over the years of watching and this match felt like the culmination of that style to me as before I would have thought it was too short to be this great. Fuck it, they did all they good in 11 grueling minutes and made a memorable, beautiful match. ****3/4

[1996-09-24-FMW-Flashover] Hayabusa & Masato Tanaka vs Terry Funk & The Gladiator
The action was fine here but I didn't see it as particularly hatefilled or innovative so therefore while the match was fun, it wasn't great in my view. The post match was really awesome however though with Funk being great leading his army of wrestlers and them having a series of promos. ***

[1996-09-23-WCW-Nitro] NWO takes over Nitro
A great beatdown and that Hogan shirt is boss. The invasion of the announce booth has too many memorable lines to list off but it was classic stuff and another memorable skit in this era of Nitro. Giant being Hogan's hype man will be my lasting impression. He doesn't really fit in but does at the same time.

[1996-09-23-WCW-Nitro] Randy Savage and the NWO
NWO knows that the roster is mostly in Japan so they are after Macho. Macho gives a great promo full of passion and that he isn't backing down from anybody.

[1996-09-23-WWF-Raw] Interview: Jim Ross
JR's promo is pipebomb esque. It is a shame that the dreadful Fake Razor came out afterwards as the crowd is buzzing and excited to see him and then you can see everything deflate as they slowly realize what is happening.

[1996-09-23-WWF-Raw] Marc Mero vs Faarooq
Sunny and Sable steal the spotlight. Sable looks legit proud of Marc in this moment which is nice to see when he dedicates the win to her after thinking Jesus.

[1996-09-23-NJPW-G1 Climax] Masa Chono & Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs Kazuo Yamazaki & Takashi Iizuka
Chono has peaked in all of the years I am following and turns in a good performance here being the leader of the group. Tenzan is enthusiastic but really has to rely on chono for help and the way to victory. Yamazaki and Iizuka are kind of unassuming partners but do their role well and it makes for an exciting match down the stretch. ***3/4

[1996-09-23-NJPW-G1 Climax] Jushin Liger vs Wild Pegasus
The crowd wasn't good but that usually doesn't bother me. I enjoyed the work a good deal in this one. Benoit was mundane in his approach at times but LIger coming back so soon from the brain tumor and having a performance at this level was insanely impressive. His use of the koppo kicks especially struck out to me. ***1/4

[1996-09-23-NJPW-G1 Climax] Shinya Hashimoto vs Shiro Koshinaka
Hash is my man and Koshinaka sucks a lot in my opinion so I was bummed to see the result. Having said that, i thought Hash did a good job of making Kosh look strong when he needed to in this match and emphasizing the importance of the final victory. I have to commend Hash again for making the butt-butt look menacing. ***1/4

[1996-09-22-WWF-Mind Games] Shawn Michaels vs Mankind
I was very intrigued to watch this again as some of Foley's most heralded matches have slipped over time in my eyes (Backlash 2004 and Rumble 2000) but this was just as majestic as I always remember it being. I think my favorite thing about this match is that it did have limb work and other semblances of it being a worked title match in the traditional sense but also had some insane spots on the floor, with the chair and the table spot with papers and announcers flying that also make it feel like a chaotic hate filled brawl. Even though Tully vs. Magnum was for the belt and a match I like better than this, it doesn't have that sort of traditional sense aspects of this match do. Vader seemed pretty late in his cue as Shawn has to get up and desert the pin. That and a few other ever so minor quibbles have this one at ****3/4 for me but it is possible a top 10 match in the promotion history.

[1996-09-22-WWF-Mind Games] Interview: Owen Hart, Brian Pillman & Steve Austin
Quite a trio for this promo and each person played their role well. This really feels like the tipping point when they were giving Austin an opportunity to enter a feud with a bigger name and see what happened as a result. His promo here has a great edge and actually compliments the more cheesy heel role Owen has played in the promotion for the past two years.

[1996-09-21-NJPW-G1 Climax] Steven Regal vs Shinya Hashimoto
I will have to watch the first match again when I plow through 1995 but I thought this was incredible and gritty. An even better version of the Uncensored Finlay vs. Regal match. I like how Regal was able to get over with the crowd with his beating and wonderfully timed comebacks. That Regal stretch was effective in making the viewer believe he had a chance to take out Hash. Speaking of Hash, man does he deliver a pissed off strike in a great way. Overall this felt like a war and was the best possible match for a Korakuen spot show challenger to your ace. ****1/4

[1996-09-20-FMW-Flashover] Hayabusa vs Hisakatsu Oya
I guess I am the high vote on this as I enjoyed it for what it was. Oya took most of the match and really laid out a pretty basic but effective game plan to ground Hayabusa. I like with Oya how he compensates when things don't go right. At one point, he looks like he is trying to powerbomb Busa when Busa slips out. Oya responds by on the fly putting his boot right on Busa's face in an effective spot of improvisation. I thought Busa's comeback was real effective here and the ending run dramatic. This was signs of the FMW that is one of my favorite promotions in the world in 1999. ***1/2

[1996-09-16-WCW-Nitro] Syxx joins the NWO
Syxx was a natural addition to the group. I feel that NWO Sting going away would have been best to clear the deck and Giant still doesn't fit in and acts like the guy at the party trying too hard to impress his new friends.

[1996-09-16-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Sting
Agree this is a top promo of Sting's career. He speaks with conviction and seems justified in his viewpoints based on how WCW has treated him up to this point. I also agree there was no way to project how well this would turn out but it was a great starting point to get Sting to start acting this way.

[1996-09-16-WWF-Raw] Owen Hart vs Marc Mero / Interview: Bret Hart
Decent enough match but stuff on WWF tv still feels pretty paint by the numbers compared to the huge developments that are happening on Nitro. The work here with Owen on top was fine but Mero always has a look of someone that could go off the rails at any point around this time. ** The promo with bret was good and solidified the uncertainty he had at this point and time in his career.

Which luchadores are you ranking?
Santo, Casas, Dandy, Satanico, Panther, Atlantis, Perro Aguayo, Sangre Chicano, Panther, Virus are the locks Black Terry, La Fiera, Emilio Charles Jr, MS-1 are the maybes. This is actually more names than I originally thought since at this point I don't consider any lucha candidate to have a shot at my top 3 and while I enjoy lucha a ton, I still consider myself a bigger fan of Japan in the international scene.
