[1999-05-27-WCW-Thunder] Chris Benoit vs DDP
This for sure has to be in contention of the best Thunder matches. Maybe the REy vs. Juvi match that made the 98 set. This had a really hot opening that made me believe it was going to be a schmozz after a few minutes only for it to settle down into a great wrestling match. I must marvel at DDP that while his heel turn felt out of the blue, he now in just a month has honed the role down and feels really sleazy and despicable eliciting hardly any positive reaction from the fans. Benoit is now a face and I can't remember if he had a falling out with Arn or what. The finish here sucks and ever so slightly dips this below great range but I am glad we had these types of matches on Thunder to show even this late, WCW consistently had better in ring matches on a given week. ***3/4

[1999-05-22-RINGS] Tsuyoshi Kohsaka vs Yoshihisa Yamamoto
Excellent match and draining at 15 minutes. I go back and forth whether this or their 30 minute 1997 match is my favorite. Yammamoto used his size here to try to ground KOhsaka but he had to be ever weary of the strikes and leg submissions of TK. My favorite moments was the kidney punches that each person peppered the other with sickening thuds. The ending strike exchange felt dramatic and opened the match up big time. I was surprised with the result of Yammamoto winning but it felt well deserved. ****1/4

[1999-05-20-WCW-Thunder] Tonight Show footage
Even without the Owen tragedy, I dont understand this program as Nash should be pissed with Savage and why does he care about Hart going after Goldberg. He all of a sudden is a company guy on screen? Wasn't he trying to destroy the company for most of the past three years? Dumb shit all around.

[1999-05-17-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin vs HHH
I am not a HHH fan but his escalation up the card has been fun to follow again in retrospect knowing the end game. I never thought these two crafted a classic match together including the famed NWO 2001 match that we analyzed well on the top 100 PTBN Roundtable. However, this match had some of the brawling aspects of that match which were the best parts. As a result, we had a good match here where again HHH didn't embarass himself hanging with the top guy. I think objectively you can see why he was given a chance in the upper card as he hasn't fell on his face yet in what we have seen. The finish with Taker hanging on the symbol provided a cool visual heading into the PPV but kind of showed how stunt style wrestling has become in 1999. So far a beer truck has been driven, monster truck, Bossman hung, Austin thrown off a bridge, and a unholy wedding. Taker repelling on a freaky symbol seems tame in comparison and we aren't five months into the year yet. There wasn't much of anywhere to go. ***

[1999-05-17-WCW-Nitro] Kevin Nash vs DDP
Bigelow is with DDP now and man does his hot debut feel like eons ago. Also, class of WCW to give us the PPV main event on the next Nitro they show. The ending of this was so fucking bad. Savage vs. Nash was awful and the lipstick stuff is horrendous. I can't believe some drunkard got fired up enough to charge the ring for this shit as it is a wrestlecrap special.

[1999-05-16-ECW-Hardcore Heaven] Tommy Dreamer vs Lance Storm
I actually was shocked at how stiff Storm was working here. It wasn't Hansen level but after seeing him throw weapon shots before, I thought he laid it in a decent amount here and made it seem at least credible. The story of Dawn Marie and Francine was fun and Francine giving Cyrus the bronco buster was a crowd pleasing moment. I do think Francine was the natural progression from Sensational Sherri as a female manager in wrestling. Storm secures the win here and the Impact Players continue to be pushed really strong. ***1/4

Where the Big Boys Play #71 - Clash of the Champions XVIII
Vader was willing to work places that paid him well. He found a market for that in Japan. I have no doubt if vader could have had a career as a football player for life, he would have. Vader doesn't strike me as much of a student of the game as he had his general theme of working most opponents. Regardless of vader my general point is that individuals like Brock and others in history have entered pro wrestling as a career and not a passion project. Why does Luger get more lambasted compared to them? My only summation is the attitude among Flair and others like Brody for Luger with the clout they had with the newsletter writers at the time.

[1996-05-23-AJPW-Super Power Series] Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama vs Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue
This started off with a furious pace. We had an elbow suicida and a backdrop within the first few minutes. Holy Demon Army work over Misawa for a bit and do a great job of dealing out punishment. Taue looks good against Misawa to help hype their upcoming Triple Crown match. Akiyama gets tagged in and cleans house of Kawada and Taue. Taue's face after the strike exchange is glorious as he cant fathom this young punk doing this. Finally they take over AKiyama and they do some straight dickish slaps and chops to put him in his place. Kawada's short kicks especially looked annoying as well as Taue standing over Akyama and open palm slapping. Kawada just destroys Akiyama when he gets to his feet at the pleading of Wada to lay off. Misawa narrowly allows AKiyama to escape an apron Nodowa and he drags Akiyama over to tag himself in. Misawa is great as a house of fire here and goes to work offering receipts for the damage laid out on Akiyama. This sort of leads into the final stretch with Akiyama seeking revenge. Akiyama pouncing on the leg damage of Kawada was nice and allows him an opening. A couple of exploders and Akyama gets the huge pinfall over Kawada. Wow what a moment and match for him. ****1/2

[1996-05-23-PWFG] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Dick Murdoch
Not to be morbid but is this the best match of someones last match of a career? Amazing to think Dick was gone a month later as this was smartly worked and an aggressive match but also an insanely smart one mixing in comedy, punches, and limb work. The spot with opening the ropes and Murdoch getting bumped on my head was a personal favorite. I had a blast with this and think it reflects well on Dick overall. ***1/2
