[1998-12-14-WCW-Nitro] Chris Jericho and Konnan
I didn't think Jericho had something like this in him this late in his run as this was great and felt like the stuff in early 1998. I really think Jericho was fabulous as a talker and overall heel in 1998. Groundbreaking stuff all around and would be #1 in year end awards if Mr. McMahon didn't exist.

[1998-12-14-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair and Eric Bischoff / Bam Bam Bigelow, Scott Hall & Kevin Nash and Goldberg
I was so into this and then so out as soon as Ric collapsed. Him bringing up past history without seeming old and dated was great. The heart attack stuff was awful with people like Tony and Gene trying to manufacture sympathy. I did like Doug Dillenger insisting in the back that Arn was riding in the ambulance. Hall and Bam Bam get into it backstage. Nash really wanted everyone to get a shine off of Bam Bam.

[1998-12-14-WCW-Nitro] Raven and Kanyon
Kanyon tells Raven to shut the fuck up and reveals his entitled past and how well off he was. Kanyon just became a big babyface in my book.

[1998-12-13-WWF-Rock Bottom] Steve Austin vs The Undertaker (Buried Alive)
A shitty end to a fitting shitty feud we have had. it was smart for Austin to take a break after this as nothing felt organic or worked here. Kane and Austin as buddies will never cease being weird. I look forward to 1999 with the Vince stuff coming back into focus and Austin honing in on Mania.

[1998-12-13-WWF-Rock Bottom] The Rock vs Mankind
Pre match stuff was weird and convoluted. Finishing stretch here was fun and action was better than Survivor Series. The near fall on the title belt was great. I hated the finish though as Vince essentially just said the title wasn't changing hands which brings into question why the referee called for the bell anyway. They try to get the crowd back with Mick wiping out the Corporation but it feels pretty cheap.

[1998-12-13-FMW-Year End Sensation] Hayabusa vs Hisakatsu Oya
This was good and I did like Oya consistently trying to grind the match back to the mat. I also thought this didn't run into the trope that Busa matches can at times with the long extended finish that makes me feel like they are blowing through too many moves. The flash pin showing that Busa came in overconfident was smart in this case. (***1/2)

[1998-12-05-AJPW-Real World Tag League] Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama vs Vader & Stan Hansen
I disagree with this as the Lariat had been presented as pretty much death the entire year so I thought it was well protected and an appropriate finish. I also thought at 19 minutes this was the correct length and a big reduction from the time limits in most of the big tag matches from the decade.

[SPLIT TOPIC] The WWE 100
Iron Man isn't odd at all when you consider wwe.com history of these things. They ranked it the greatest WWE Championship match of all time for example.

[1998-12-11-ECW-TV] Pulp Fiction
I also marked that Doring and Roadkill cropped up here as they were the perennial mid carders when I started watching ECW as a 12 year old in 1999. The Dudley promo here finishing this edition out was good with Bubba doing a long form interview and DVon looking pissed. This was better than the last few Pulp Fiction editions.

[1998-12-07-WWF-Raw] The Rock & The Undertaker vs Steve Austin & Mankind
Shoddy angle for a dreadful feud. This is legit wrestlecrap stuff and an awful build. I still say we havent found the lows of the funeral home stint but I can't see how anyone would have been pumped for the match based on what we have seen. If these four were motivated and in the right frame of mind, they probably could have had a fun traditional tag match. (*1/4)

Wrestling Fans & Motivations
Great post Marty. I think it comes down a lot to expectations going in. Tropes have been around for years that so and so sucks or Junk Food Dog that it becomes second nature and as a viewer, you go in with those predisposed expectation and look for anything to attack and pounce on. Luger and Savage are both old so this must have been a shitty match between two guys over the heel holding down crusierweights that were filling out the undercards. You come for the undercard with WCW PPV's and turn it off before the main event. Nitro was full of great cruiserweight matches. This shit has been spewed for a while now. There is some truth in parts of it but it isn't equal. This is true for everyone though. A couple of months back I watched the Tenryu vs. Araya match from January 1998. I thought it was poor overall and especially Tenryu gave a confusing performance that had no rhyme or reason. I never expect Tenryu to be the most crisp wrestler around, but here he was sloppy and scatterbrained. However, I was a tad reluctant for a minute in really digging into the match on my comments. I do love Tenryu as a wrestler afterall. For about two minutes I pondered this and then said fuck that, I am calling a spade a spade and I stand by Tenryu being garbage in the above match. Sometimes we feel the need to justify or give equal passes to guys we enjoy and are quick to lambast individuals we loathe. Simmons vs. Luger is another good example from Havoc 1991. This has been a divisive match in my wrestling circle lately. I think the main criticism is that both guys especially Luger looked blown up. That only adds to the match for me that they sold a sense of exasperation and fatigue. Whereas Flair sweating like crazy is seen as him working hard and making the most out of a 20 minute match, this was seen as Luger being gassed out and out of it. I think the finish of that match with him adjusting his finisher on Simmons' injured shoulder shows a level of intuitiveness we rarely get in current day wrestling. It is splendid adjustment that showed someone not sucking air and going through the motions. Motivations will always exist of fans. My hope is to try to be as unbiased as possible and let the performance speak for itself.

[1998-12-07-WWF-Raw] HHH & X-Pac vs Big Bossman & Ken Shamrock
Who didn't see this coming? Pretty pointless stuff I guess there to incite a tag team title feud. Shawn pitches a pretty good shit fit.

Nash has completely shoe horned his way into the Bam Bam vs. Goldberg feud and effected it from a heat and interest standpoint.
