[1997-01-20-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi
Second puro match I ever saw. First was Misawa vs. Kawada 1/99 which was cool but didn't really hook me in. Watched this match right away and thought it was a step above but honestly at 15 years old it was above my mental capacity to really get it on a meta level. Every time I have watched it since, I have absolutely come to grips with how amazing it is and really flirted with it being my favorite All Japan match of all time even though I knew that was a lesser opinion. Now in the past 2 years I have watched all the general GOAT suspects. I feel confident that as of right now this is the best pro wrestling match I have ever seen. The main takeaway that put it over the top this time was the opening sequence. The rib work was compelling with Kobashi showing dominance and Misawa showing how integral to his overall moveset the elbow was. Of course once that elbow gets injured, it is on and Misawa is in real jeopardy and you feel an "ace" changing moment not unlike some of the feelings you get in 6/8/90. However, this match is able to mix in some of those elements and combine it with "epic" finishing match style that they had worked toward the past three years. That type of finishing exchange reaches its peak in this match and will not be equaled since. Everything kicked out of here made sense and added to the richness of the story being told. This match is truly a masterpiece. Edit: JDW mentions it below me a bit but I find it amazing that Misawa threw out these two masterful performances within 45 days of each other.

[1997-01-20-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Jun Akiyama vs Akira Taue
This was a lot better and complete match than I remembered. This was my second puro tape I ever watched so the psyche was a little off for me as I was like man, All Japan has some cool upset short matches. Taue was still strong here and just won the tag titles for his team 3 days earlier so Akiyama beating him in this fashion while still looking a little fluky was a big moment.

[1997-01-19-GAEA] Mayumi Ozaki & Sugar Sato & Chikayo Nagashima vs Chigusa Nagayo & Sonoko Kato & Meiko Satomura
This match had some cool moments. I was fine with chigusa. It was cool seeing Meiko and Chikayo do their thing for the first time on the yearbook. I especially liked the mini choking and grappling match that Chigusa and Oz did around 10 minutes in. However, unfortunately this also didnt seem to have much direction at points. Oz is getting her ass kicked and they are building up dramatic tension and two minutes later she is powerbombing people through tables inside the ring. Heat felt pretty blah for this. Finishing stretch was good with Oz trying to put Chigusa away but overall this left me wanting more. Finish was cool with Sato looking vicious with leg lock.

[1997-01-18-WWF-Shotgun Saturday Night] Steve Austin vs Goldust
Goldust giving birth would be interesting. I also find it humorous how much stock they put into the boys opinions on things. I am not saying this is world class wrestling television but so far Shotgun has been immensely more entertaining than the Raw clips. Short compact match and Goldust looks huge in this small setting. We get our obligatory Royal Rumble brawl to end the show back when it felt fresh and instigated by Funk and Austin battling to the bar.

[1997-01-18-WWF-Shotgun Saturday Night] Steve Austin and Terry Funk
Funk gives one of his nonsensical promos that veers all over the place but works beautifully in the Shotgun setting. Austin listening in deterred works well also. Todd got a kick out of his WCW quip. The brawl with Austin was good while it lasted.

[1997-01-18-ECW-TV] Raven vs The Sandman
We start with the BWO coming out and the crowd is hot as hell. The interplay between Stevie and Raven was good here with it not being clear who Stevies main targets were with both of his superkicks. The superkick to Raven got a huge pop. Stevie presents a BWO shirt to Sandman and then they bail. Sandman chokes Raven with the shirt. The action again isnt terribly interesting to me between Raven vs. sandman but the crowd is rabid and Joey makes a wise decision by laying low with the cane shots for full effect. Match ends with Sandman taking the belt.

[1997-01-18-ECW-TV] Ricky Morton & Tommy Rich vs The Gangstas / Ricky Morton vs Tommy Rich
I was conditioned to hate this just the way it was worked with the Gangsters introducing Morton and Rich to the ECW style of things. We get around 5 minutes of pure garbage chaos and its not terrible but not terribly exhilarating to me seeing Mroton and Rich pinball around. We then get a bloody brawl with Morton and Rich. I detest Joey Styles so much as an announcer.

[1997-01-18-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Psicosis
Psicosis had some great gear around this time. Return match with Piscosis seeking some revenge. They work at a more feverish pace as a result and have some really nifty stuff to fill out the five minutes. Regal gives a reverse suplex and catches Psicosis with a dropkick. Regal gets a nice win with the stretch.

[1997-01-18-USWA-TV] Interview: PG-13
PG 13 gives their gloating promo. Jaime gives a promo on Bill Dundee as only he can. Jaime proclaims that Bill walked on on his and his mom. The USWA NOD rules.

[1997-01-18-USWA-TV] PG-13 and Flash Flanagan
Big beatdown from the first commercial break as they give Flash a piledriver and super powerbomb. They even use a cane that we learn is from Wolfie's mom. That is Memphis and flash is on the shelf for the foreseeable future. Maclin is outraged when Wolfie gives a senton to the outside to the delight of the NOD fans.

[1997-01-12-JWP] Hiromi Yagi vs Tomoko Kuzumi
Two people I were not familar with here. Very fun stuff. The progression from the matwork to dives and brawling to the finishing bombs flowed well for me. I don't think it was quite a great match but it didn't really aspire to be that. Just an all around very good 14 minute match.

[1997-01-13-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant
Hollywood Hulk Hogan is amazing. His entrance with him reigning in the attention of all the NWO members is great. I had forgotten that the Giant still didn't have any music which is a cool touch still. His stalling techniquest leading to him being slammed into the ring was great. I think having this all spliced together made it show how ridiculous it was for Tony to insist they had been fighting for 50 minutes without Hogan breaking a sweat. Pretty fun squash match of Hogan getting destroyed until the predictable NWO run in ensues.

[1997-01-13-WCW-Nitro] Wolfpac promo
Outsiders make some good points talking about how the match at Souled Out is not a wrestling match so their ametuer credentials are nullified. They also bring up Scott's back. Good stuff with cutting edge production. The main components of the NWO were cool as hell right now.

[1997-01-13-WWF-Raw] Davey Boy Smith vs Rocky Maivia
Rock's bump after the doulbe nogging knocker was horrid. Incredible where he would be at just two years later. Austin is certainly not as polished as he would be in 1990 but the blueprint is there. Owen stonefaced staring down Bret is a cool visual. I liked the attack of Austin and Bret selling after him down the aisle with Owen stalking behind.

[1997-01-13-WWF-Raw] Sid promo / Interview: Shawn Michaels
Two weeks in a row of subpar build for this one. It seemed inevitable that Shawn was winning. Sid actually did a better job at doing his promo in the Alamodome but Shawn at Park Place just felt disconnected. Also weird that neither one of them was live the week before the show.
