PTB Episode 192: Summerslam 1998
Good show. Not a whole lot to add but I was a bit surprised at some of the negative feedback on the show especially in regards to Austin vs. Taker. I watched it again this morning and think its a damn good match with a lot of hate.

Your Current Fav Five
After a month my list has changed pretty dramatically: 1. Ric Flair - He is still doing his thing in the stuff that I am watching for the podcast and he has still been really damn good in 1990 as well. Perhaps he has dropped a step or two but he would still be a strong WOTYC in 1990 as I only have Dandy ahead of him at the moment. 2. The Rockers - Obviously very interested in them after starting the microscope thread and I was amazed and excited with how much they varied their offense from the two conquistador matchups. 3. The Fantastics- They lost a little steam at the end of their NWA run but were still a fun team to evaluate. There run in All Japan in 1990 has been pretty well fantastic. 4. Nick Bockwinkel - Been sprinkling in footage that Dylan is reviewing when time allows. A worker that is reputation is really rising in my eyes the more I see. 5. Jumbo Tsurtua - Jumbo has finally become a grumpy bastard and it is a glorious transformation. He has been the star in every match he has competed in.

Where the Big Boys Play #33
What were your previous thoughts on the PPV as a whole Loss and Shoe? NWA seems kind of weird in these past few shows where I would have been satisfied if I bought the show but it feels like the potential for an all timer is there and they are just missing the mark.

The Rockers
Rockers vs Conquistadors (LA Sports Arena, 7/15/1988) Gorilla, Mooney, and Superstar are on commentary for this one. Gorilla pushes for Graham to become the Rockers manager. Match starts with Conquistador taking Marty down with a waistlock and Marty using his speed to escape. Marty gets a nearfall off a crossbody in the early going and locks on a headlock. The Conqusitador goads Shawn into the ring and then they double team while the official tends to Shawn. Marty tries to crossbody both Conquistadors and does so with a dropkick assist from Shawn. Rockers do a real nice sequence where they each give two bodyslams, stereo dropkicks sending the Conquistadors to the outside, and then stereo dives on the outside. Ventura comes out to jaw with Graham and joins commentary. This pisses me off as you can hear stuff going on in the ring as they focus on Jesse. Marty is the one with the splash on the arm in this match and Shawn does some really neat cranking on the arm. Double elbow on the Conquistador as this match has been all Rockers. Conquistadors catch Shawn with a punch on a leap frog and take over. Conquistador offense is very punch, kick, choke oriented but the shots is more precise and stiffer here. Shawn does his crazy bump into the corner. Nice hope spot as Shawn kicks out of a pin attempt and send the Conquistador to the floor, but then the Conquistadors switch to remain on offense. Gorilla cant stop talking about Jesse instead of the match which is annoying. I really like the vicious lucha brawling side of the Conquistadors more than the strutting, clunky style we saw them utilize in the Boston match. Shawn does a good tree standing in the forest style bump off an elbow. This has been really good in cutting off his hope spots. Graham claims Shawn got luck that the ref counted slow. Announcing is terrible. Marty gets the hot tag to a MONSTER pop. Marty has a great hot tag sequence hitting moves and the Conquistadors flying everywhere. Shawn hiptosses Marty onto a Conquistador and then hits the flying fist from the top for the victory in around 15 minutes. Wow what a difference 6 days makes. Graham’s site shows that they worked two more times between Boston and this so perhaps they worked out their problems in the Boston match. This was a really good tag match showing the Rockers as fast and energetic. I can’t wait for their MSG match with the Conquistadors now.

[1990-09-01-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Master Blasters video / Interview: Sting
Cant say from what I saw that I would be excited about the Master Blasters coming in. Someone should analyze the scorpion angle and see how many inconsistencies end up happening as a result of it. Overall this was my favorite disc of 1990 so far. Some classic stuff (All Japan 9/1, lawler getting run over), some frustrating (follow up to Lawler, Aja/Bull), some better than would have been expected (Hogan/Quake, Rude/Warrior) and some just flat out wrestlecrap (Black Scorpion, Cowabunga, Sam Houston hotline).
