[1990-02-06-NWA-Clash of the Champions X] "I TRIED TO TELL YOU, I BOUGHT YOU SOME TIME"
I cant understand what the thought process was for this given the reactions Sting and Horseman as babyfaces were getting. I had always assumed it was flat but the TV matches have been white hot with crowd heat and this promo seems to come out of nowhere. This really may be one of the most baffling moves in WCW history and think of the ground that covers.

[1990-02-03-USWA-Championship Sports] Music Video: Dutch Mantell / Music Video: Chris Champion / Music Video: Jeff Jarrett
Dutch video was good and I thought the bump that Lawler took in the video was incredible. Champion video actually fit well and he looked more competent than I would have thought but the green graphics was distracting. Jarrett video looked dated both in song and footage but I must admit that I had never heard that song before but I did have to listen to it again on youtube.

[1990-02-03-USWA-Championship Sports] Kerry Von Erich and The Soul Taker
On one hand this is sad, on the other this is the worst and most unintentionally funny promo I have ever seen. Kerry calls him Marc not once but again when the Soul taker comes out. Kerry knows that Soul Taker watches him in dark corners but he doesn't let kerry know he is there. WTF. Kerry gets laid out. This promo should be a youtube sensation up there with the Jeff Farmer promo debacle.

[1990-02-03-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Clash of the Champions X: Texas Shoot Out Commercial
I am always a sucker for western motif in wrestling so I greatly enjoyed this. The pre tapes were fine and the insult of Williams sister was an interesting strategy by the Savage.

[1990-02-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler, Kerry Von Erich and Jeff Jarrett
Lawler has drawn a pretty picture for Dave and we get some good clips showing guitars getting busted on heads and brawls throughout the arena. Lawler then gives his most straight fired up promo of the year which is followed by Jarrett looking like a deer in the headlights and Kerry saying a few words. Hot angle and a lot of parts are being intertwined.

[1990-02-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Dr Lawler
I don't know what I liked best about this segment: Lawler being in scrubs, him name dropping Hogan, Sting, etc, or this is not a taste test line. Regardless, this was another long Lawler 1990 segment and really was surreal to watch.

[1990-02-03-WWF-Superstars] Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior promos
I thought Hogan was doing a decent job getting over a respect babyface vs. babyface angle but then we take a sharp left turn and get a barrage of biblical references that made no sense and Hogan pondering if the warrior is infused with the devil. Warrior responds by spouting off some more nonsense. This was some batshit crazy stuff.

[1990-02-03-WWF-Superstars] Jake Roberts vs Ted DiBiase
Was shocked to see them in a match on Superstars based on the build but was glad it was mainly used as a vehicle to advance the storyline and not too much was given away. The angle with Boss Man was really well done and actually seems like one of the better babyface turns in company history. I loved Jake still being guarded against Boss Man when he returned to the ring.

[1990-02-02-USWA Texas] Jerry Lawler & Billy Joe Travis vs Jeff Jarrett & Bill Dundee
Most disappointing USWA match so far as I couldn't get behind the schtick with the chain. Travis really does seem like a lost figure in time so far as he fits right in with Dundee and Lawler. Dundee may have the worst array of wrestling tights in history at this time. Ending beatdown was done well.

[1990-02-02-NWA-Power Hour] Ric Flair vs Tom Zenk
The Flair broomstick analogy seems really appropriate here as he really did lead Zenk to probably the best match of his life. Good basic story with the intensity being ramped up in appropriate moments and Flair resulting to some underhanded tactics in order to secure the victory. It may really go to shit but as of right now, there is no doubt that Flair is my wrestler of the year.

[1990-01-31-NJPW] Jushin Liger vs Naoki Sano
True confession, I have never seen this match before. I think this match is enriched by sitting through the previous match as everything they did here served a purpose and advanced the storyline of the match. A masterful performance by both Liger playing the wounded warrior and Sano constantly given punishment and being an assassin. Liger ambushes him at the start but it is not long before Sano dishes out an ass kicking of the ages with mask ripping, blood, and overall general intensity that is rare for junior wrestling. Liger gets in some hope spots with a beautiful dive but it seems like Sano is able to weather the storm and has the win within his grasp. This makes every nearfall dramatic.. The ending with them just wanting to end the match is beautiful in a way and Liger's SSP to win the title and him slamming down the belt was poignant and amazing for the theme of the match. It would have been easy for him to be jumping up and cheering after winning the belt but he stayed true to the theme. A superb match.

[1990-01-30-NJPW] Jushin Liger vs Owen Hart
I would say the match just didn't have any substance or a contained story between the highspots. All of the matwork felt aimless and was not intriguing at all. Pretty disappointing to me as I was hoping for a good story match to go along with the highspots.

Rewatching and first time viewing
Good to see a lot of interesting looking stuff was actually left on the cutting room floor. The other thing I wanted to ask Loss was what is your criteria for what makes this list. As we go along chronologically I will want to revisit some stuff in 1994 but don't know if I want to sift through everything again around a year after I watched it originally.

[1990-01-27-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior vs Mr Perfect & The Genius
This match doesn't look exactly even on paper. I loved Genius' poem on the pre match promo and Hogan/Warrior buddy promo is testosterone overload. I think the reason that Perfect vs. Hogan never worked was due to how much perfect bumped for him and the lack of danger you sensed for Hogan's sake. Vince lets us know not to be flamboyant in front of the warrior. Perfect hits the perfect plex and Warrior can't be bothered to make the save but Perfect stops the count in a complete illogical and dumb move. Post match see dissention between Warrior and Hogan and even casual viewers should know where Wrestlemania is headed now. Pretty fun match overall.
