Mauro is atrocious. He always struck me as a guy who had a dream to become a wrestling PBP man, and he made it happen, all logic and evidence and lack of talent be damned. His BIG BOY VOICE is the dirt worst.

This is true, but even in that context, Bray Wyatt could be improved if they were willing (or even able) to write him as really creepy. Hannibal Lector didn't succeed by talking in vague metaphors about family, he slurped his tongue at the end of a story about eating someone.

Bret/Owen *was* a workrate match in its time, though a remarkably story-strong one. Dave has always leaned workrate (see his "a bunch of great moves happened" reviews), and that fuels his now-ism a bit.

Hell, in WWE it was probably an overcorrection to the years 2002-06.

Related to that, Dave has never been known for elucidating the context, subtext, through-line, or drama of a match, or even saying anything very interesting about one. He mostly just says whether (not how) it was good and whether the crowd popped, plus a bunch of PBP. When he and best friend Connie must face off for the last spot on the team (Khan: "Take old playmate down hard and fast"), they avoid any hurt feelings by having a worked match with chair shots, airplane spins, etc.
