If the limo ride is how Flair is written out of this match, doesn't that imply Doom was part of the Black Scorpion conspiracy, and wouldn't that make this match a put-on? Goddamn you, Ole. Ross has such a strange blowup after the match. Ross: Fans, we apologize, we do not know the winner of the match! Paul: You need to apologize to me! I wanna know who won the match! Ross: Well I do too, stupid! You think I'm just sitting here like an idiot?

A lot to like here, as for once some good drama is milked out of screwy false finishes. However I would have liked another 5 minutes or so. Lex looks really intense, and this match really makes me think of Hansen's working style as a driver for his opponent, not just the stiffness but the way he drags small details out of them, like making them roll him into the ring extra hard before he'll budge. The boot shot during the ending is a sight to behold.

MLB.TV has this feature. Actually you can put either video feed with any of the radio or TV teams, or ambient noise. Great for eliminating Hawk Harrelson and a few others. As for wrestling, great commentary is a nice but not necessary bonus, but truly bad commentary can go a long way towards killing a mood for me and I'd rather have none than bad. It takes some pretty bad announcing to reach that level, though. Unfortunately I've probably let it bias me against some scenes, like some modern indy seems to have that combination of smark talk and douchey voices. I don't think I notice bad commentary in languages I don't speak. And it took until the Mid-South set for me to get really used to commentary-free matches. I definitely agree about Schiavone and Ventura being great together, in WWF as well as WCW. One of my favorite bits was when Jesse would push Tony just a bit too far, get him to snap back, and have to apologize in-character. At SuperBrawl III, Jesse made a joke about Tony beating his kids--"Now you stop that, Jesse!" This would be a good place to mention that it occurred to me the other day WCW in 1990 had probably the most talented and almost certainly the biggest announcing cast of all time. Jim Ross, Gordon Solie, Lance Russell, Tony Schiavone, Bob Caudle, Chris Cruise, Paul E, Jim Cornette, Teddy Long, Missy Hyatt, Terry Funk, Dutch Mantel, Michael Hayes, and Jimmy Garvin all worked regularly at some point during the year, if I'm even remembering everyone.

The next weekend on WCW, there's an amusing vignette that looks inside the Wallstreet offices, a/k/a some CNN monitor room. Wallstreet barks out charismaless commands to charismaless lackeys and he and York laugh triumphantly over the latest computer algorithms. They play Wallstreet's new, Dallas-inspired theme. One of the lackeys gets off this oblique Promotion Wars zinger: "Mr. Wallstreet, a Mr. Finkel from New York called asking for donations to a children's charity. What should I tell him?"

Which is positively demented--half the old DVDs aren't in stores anymore, and the other half probably aren't selling very many copies anyway. Might as well put them on the Network and promote them. They had no problem with putting certain ones on Netflix, extras and all.

When they announced his height and weight, I was convinced Lawler was going to work our mascot, Rumble the Bison. God bless Lance Russell. You could close your eyes and never guess his age.

They didn't really reference his accomplishments as a wrestler, just his notoriety. The vignettes ended with a freeze frame on Dusty, the American Dream logo would appear, and the other person in the spot would VO "Hey, aren't you...?" It wasn't like acknowledging Flair as a world champion. One other thing like that I can remember is referring to Savage as "wrestling's hottest free agent" in 1985.

At the football stadium, presumably? I know local gates are less and less important to Mania, but I can't imagine them being able to rebuild a Mania level of excitement in 2 years after that debacle. Maybe that's a bit hyperbolic on my part, ha.

Really solid stuff. Not much I can add except that this is an exemplar in not judging a match/worker before you watch it. If you Google this match, a bunch of Kevin the Masked Reviewer dot Blogspot types trash it on not much more than the received wisdom that the Nasties can't work, without bothering to look at the actual work.

I believe on the Network the bars are actually in the video file for SD footage. If you download one you get a 1280x720 mp4 that displays with bars. The first WWE PPV produced in HD was Royal Rumble 2008.

So I'm watching the terrible Southern Boys/Master Blasters match from Havoc '90 solely for the finish and Cornette and Heyman sniping on commentary, and early on the crowd breaks out in a brief but loud "LOD! LOD!" chant for the Blasters. People are visibly laughing and pointing at them. Yeeeeouch.

Bunches and bunches. A few: - Steamboat's "Sirius" by Alan Parsons Project is always replaced with a generic synth piece. - Koko's "Bird Bird Bird" is inconsistently replaced with "Piledriver." - Demolition's original theme is always replaced with the famous Derringer one. - Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase" (Midnight Express theme) is always replaced with a generic synth piece. - Terry Funk's use of Morricone's "Man With The Harmonica" is always replaced with a generic western piece. - ELO's "Rock and Roll Is King" is always replaced for the RnRs. Not very often, because they haven't used much footage of them with that theme. - "Iron Man" is always replaced with the WCW knockoff. I assume the '90s WCW songs (Sting, Steiners, Scorpio, Dustin, Rude, Badd, etc) were included in the big rights buy, because they're rarely if ever replaced. (You only asked about WWF, didn't you. Oh well.)

Fair point, but I feel like he's broken similar stories without concern or consequence many times. Again, weird business that he has a weird place in.

IIRC Meltz found out Benoit was winning the Rumble and eventually the title at mania in Nov./Dec. 2003 but sat on the news. Can't remember if it was at the request of the company or that he didn't want to ruin it for smart fans. It was a wild time on the net Well heck, shame we just had a "Dave Meltzer's journalistic credibility" discussion last month. Imagine a beat reporter finding out Phil Jackson is coming out of retirement to coach the Knicks next year, but sitting on it because it would make Knicks fans so happy if the press conference was a surprise. And imagine him having that luxury because nobody else is on his beat.
