Well, DDP did do promos leading to this where he explicitely talked about managing Hall ad tagging with Nash, as well as him being a friend of Eric Bischoff. Can't be much more literal than this. Great angle, of course. Nash took a hellacious bump over the top rope to a table to the floor, swinging the table away with him for added effect. DDP leaves through the crowd and a star is born. In the Superdome no less. Damn, WCW had so much going for them at this point, it's amazing to think two years later they would be bleeding money and had pissed away their best new fresh talent. -
None taken. But seriously, there was absolutely nothing creepy about it to me. It was all too polished and clean to be anything but "cute bullshit" to me. And that's the issue I have with the whole Bray Wyatt act (and modern WWE as a whole). Waylon Mercy was doing the Cape Fear gimmick ten times better and came off actually creepy. Probably because Danny Spivey without the gimmick already looked creepy as fuck, and his whole delivery as this character made it even worse.

This is everything to love about Saturday Night : a random pairing (Regal and Psych, really ?), a fun match, a midcarder actually getting time to cut a strong promo and Dusty being a riot. Him and Schiavone are so much fun together, it's a shame we had to suffer through a couldn't-care-less Heenan on Nitro, although one could argue Dusty's antics were more suited to the B-show.

Austin saying guys should not do backdrops on rats since it wouldn't hurt them, they wouldn't sell it and it would expose the business cracked me up big time. Austin can be downright hilarious.

What a terrific segment. Interestingly, Liz still acts like she's reluctantly involved in all of this. This is where the nWo B-players served a purpose, some good cannon fodder for the Giant. Gotta love that the victim which gets the biggest reaction is Nick Patrick, who takes a nasty bump to boot. The whole mysterious Sting angle was still extremely efficient here, and the nWo guys are funny trying to convince themselves he's aligned with them. Hey, Vince actually serves a purpose too and is good in this segment, checking out the fallen Giant forever before daring to out a feet on him. Huuuuuuuge chokeslam. The visual of the lone Giant swinging the bat juxtaposed with Sting lurking is an awesome cliffhanger. Great great stuff.

Arn was on Saturday Night against Chavo Jr. in 01/04/97 (of course it was most probably taped before the Nitro match). Edit : actually, Arn did work another match live on Nitro in 1997, against Rick Steiner on January 13. He was also featured on Satudray Night on 01/18 against the Barbarian in a fun little match ending with another Jarrett/Benoit angle. Edit : and yet another one : Arn & Steve McMicheal vs Eddie Guerrero & Jeff Jarrett on Nitro January 20.

Word. I hate that spot too. And it's usually so randomly done. You can also argue that the ref is paying the heel back for cheating so much earlier in the match, but still. Just a stupid spot to me.

I never understood why Lee was positionned as the female wrestling specialist in WCW. He had that cool deep voice though.

Schiavone was excellent during the early nWo days too. He had some terrific moments and really helped get the angle over.

To me, character-wise, it was really when he came back from injury (on TV) in late 96/early 97. He had been on and off since his comeback in 93, with a last peak of being super fun in 96 with Liz & Woman feuding with Savage. In 97, he wasn't the same guy anymore. Some point out to the Hogan feud in 94. I would disagree although at times yeah he was already in hyper-Ric mode then and not in a good way.

Mmkay… the children choir was cute. Not great. Not creepy. Not horrifying. It was cute. That's the problem with Bray Wyatt. He's cute. He doesn't strike fear in anyone's heart. He should turn babyface tomorrow, it would work infinitely better for me. Flair, well, it's been about 15 years since his days of being on live TV are over, really. Sad. And yeah, Trip was even sadder. The Wrestlemania great performance looks like a miracle from where we are now. Still curious about the product though.

Well, I still like this match a lot, all because of Hogan, really, as Roddy looked pretty awful at times. It should have been a one time only deal of course. Total feel-good moment and the first crack in the nWo armor. The booking was going into the right direction (in theory, with Luger being over like no one's business and a stronger and stronger undercard) and Starrcade was a great way to cap off a terrific 1996 for WCW.

Quite the good match too with a hot finishing stretch again, also Benoit vs Jarrett was better as a whole. Good angle at the end, building two babyface at once basically, the soon-to-turn DDP and the already over Eddie getting the US belt in the process. It's a testament to how over Eddie was as the Outsiders got a huge babyface reaction winning against the Faces of Fear, but Eddie still gets the most babyface support here. On a sidenote, Sullivan using himself to get Benoit over and putting the US belt on Eddie really puts in perspective the rampant paranoia of the early 00's, because if anyone pushed these guys from the start, it was Sullivan.

Underrated match. Liger beating the shit out of Rey was pretty great. It's not the old Liger and it takes place in the US so of course it's more deliberate, but it's still pretty damn good. The only drawback to me is that they don't get to work a long and hot run to the finish. Dusty was funny, but he and Heenan especially have no idea how to get this kind of match over.

Excellent match thanks to the great end stretch, but Malenko is a tone deaf worker with absolutely no notion of what the crowd wants. Ultimo was awesome at this time, so much quickness and intensity, and so much great offense to bring to the table. Despite the cliché Iceman gimmick which basically was an excuse for a lack of charisma, Malenko was much better as a fiery babyface as showed here during the run to the finish, since he was a great mechanic and had a lot of cool spots under his belt.

Schiavone and the other announcers not picking on the fact the Amazing French Canadian were actually singing their national anthem in *french* and saying "they don't know the words !" each time around was embarrasing.

Wallstreet already joined the week before. Chono joined earlier in the show. This is the official turn of Bubba & Norton, and yeah, the nWo is officially saturated with JTTS. It certainly didn't kill the nWo, but it killed the aura it had during the first 6 months. The Sting spots were cool though, with untrusting WCW members jumping on him, leading to Sting packing off without even touching an nWo guy.
