[1996-06-16-WCW-Great American Bash] Rey Misterio Jr vs Dean Malenko
What Loss said. In there Dean truly was wrestling at his best, and he looked like a great worker. Mysterio got himself over and already looked like the best worker in the company next to Benoit. And all of a sudden the cruiserweight title is becoming something important to the WCW alchemy, and something absolutely new and fresh in the US wrestling realm. WCW was truly going forward in spectacular ways at this point.

[1996-06-10-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
Flair and Arn bitch forever before they get any kind of offense. This truly has an early WCW/late NWA feel to it, although Flair looks old at points, like when he fucks up his usual reversal spot with Sting. Arn is terrific and Luger worked hard almost every time around at this point. And once again, a good post-matcg angle putting over the Giant as a monster.

[1996-06-10-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Scott Hall & Kevin Nash
I agree this is a money promo if Nash ever gave one. Hall is great bullying Eric on the side, messing up with his hair, while Nash looks downright threatening and dangerous. The way Heenan flew off the set at the beginning was perfect. Damn, going through the early stage of the nWo angle just reminds me why I used to love WCW.

[1996-06-03-WCW-Nitro] Scott Hall and Sting
Terrific angle. Hall was still deeply in Razor mode here. Bischoff is pretty great in putting over the tension and fear, and Sting's slap is fantastic. You can feel something special is building here.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
Yeah. Well, English teaching in Japan seemed to be a pretty cool way to go back into a normal, more stable way of living. I remember WWF always pimped the fact she spoke several languages back then. Hopefully for her, the whole "fired because drunk" thing is just a rumour.

And not because there are some videos out there of her going into gang-bangs with wrestlers look-alike ?

[1996-05-27-WCW-Nitro] The Mauler vs Steve Doll
There it is. The biggest angle of the 90's, the one which arguably kickstarted the new golden age begins. The execution was so great. For a few months, everything about the nWo angle was amazing and just perfectly done. Gotta love how they use WWF's petty video against them here, in a constructive way.

[1996-05-27-WCW-Nitro] Sting vs Scott Steiner
Not a good match. Scott Steiner in single at this point just doens't know what the hell to do. The Hall promo was again perfect. Gotta love the "Who do you mean "we" ?" from Bischoff. And the fact Hall says "Let's do it in the ring, where it matters". Yep, it was no "shooty-shooty" angle, it was about the wrestling. It was old-school. Just perfect. I get chills watching this stuff back.

[1996-05-20-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair vs Eddy Guerrero
For Flair in 96, it's a really good match. For Eddie in 96, this is decent. It's obvious Eddie had to tone it down a lot for Flair not to get over his head. Eddie was getting himself over as a sympathetic babyface on his talent alone (unlike Malenko, whom the crowd couldn't care less about, go figure). Flair's promo at the VIP table is always a winner.

The "HHH build and match". Who would want that ?

The Daniel Bryan Push Thread
Vince Russo was all about "working the smarts". It sure did wonder in the long run. I'm amazed that a company would willingly hurt the perception of a guy just to troll its hardcore audience.

[1996-05-19-WCW-Slamboree] Battlebowl Battle Royal
JTTS battle royal for a bogus title. Gotta love how Sullivan talks about it in the 96 Timeline : "How went the discussions about that ?" "There was no discussion. -This is what you're going to do-". But really, DDP would get over by himself not because of this match but because his cool finisher would eventually caught up + the nWo recruiting angle which made him a star.

[1996-05-19-WCW-Slamboree] Ric Flair & Randy Savage vs Arn Anderson & Eddy Guerrero
Yeah, Savage vs Flair was really getting super hot at this point, with Savage totally on the edge and Flair trolling him to no end. Fun match with some cool dynamics between the partners/opponent. It's obvious Eddie was getting over already too.

Punk Walks Out of WWE
So, Bryan vs HHH. Oh, those Hunter & Stephy promos to come... Well, if Punk leaves (and being booked against Kane in 2014 seems a good enough reason), there's your big nostalgia comeback for WM in 5 years.

Dave Meltzer stuff
Luger had been the last efficient draw of the NWA though, against Ric Flair. He was an established star already. Of course Vince fucked it up by making him a happy choker at SummerSlam.

[1996-05-13-WCW-Nitro] Lex Luger vs The Giant
Hey remember when being put through a table was a BIG SPOT that was sold as lethal ? Luger did a good job with Giant here, much better than Flair or Hogan ever did. I love Flair's VIP table, the whole build toward the Horsemen vs the football players was terrific. They did a really good job building up the Giant in a realistic way now that Hogan was away.
