[1994-11-26-WCW-Saturday Night] Steve Austin vs Jim Duggan
One thing I'll say about Duggan, he worked way harder facing Austin and Vader than he did during his entire WWF career, resulting in having also much better matches. Maybe the fact he was actually featured in longer matches pushed him, but as much as I can't stand the character and the fact he got here by being Hogan's friend, he did show up to work, at least at the beginning against excellent opponents. Austin making fun of Duggan is pretty priceless.

Well, I'll take a break after completing 1994, I think I'll need one despite all the FF. But yeah, I feel like the most fun part of WCW in 1995 will be on the B and C shows. For instance, I just saw a pretty cool Dustin Rhodes vs Jean Paul Levesque from Pro, called by Gordon Solie, Dusty & Zbyszko. Solie calling a HHH match is pretty surreal. Funny to think it would be a WrestleMania match a few years later. Levesque really showed potential, but he also butchered a flying knee like I've rarely seen. Good little match though for someone who was still green (and he already was doing the Pedigree in squashes too).

[1994-11-16-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXIX] Hulk Hogan & Sting & Dave Sullivan vs Avalanche & Butcher & Kevin Sullivan
Sting must be thinking "Awww crap, I was the franchise and the face of WCW, now I'm barely Randy Savage in his best Hogan's bitch role, wearing stupid red and yellow". Wait, no he was probably thinking "Yeh, I have a new brother in paint because we lifted weights and went surfing together !" The match itself is not too bad since Dave Sullivan is ejected early and Tenta carries the whole thing on his back (Sullivan works decently hard too). It's amazing how useless and inept Beefcake was, as the match totally dies each time he enters the ring. It's also amazing to consider they still went with him main eventing Starrcade when it was obvious nobody gave a shit about him. Why not go with Hogan vs Avalanche instead ? Tenta could work and knew out to heat heat. Anyway... Shitty undecipherable finish and it's funny how Stars & Stripes are just thrown to the lions one hour after they regain the World Tag Team Titles. Way to make them look like jobbers. Beefcake uses the lethal sleeper on Hogan and Heenan says it's dangerous as it could lead to brain damage for Hogan. Well, that would give us two Dave Sullivan then. Not too bad of a match thanks to Tenta, horrible angle. Beefcake is one of the most useless worker ever.

[1994-11-16-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXIX] Vader vs Dustin Rhodes
Vader and Dustin proudly carry the flag of old-school WCW with stiff work, hate-filled brawling, shit kicking and a damn super match that look nearly out of place in the Hogan running wild context. Thankfully Duggan shows up at the end to remind us where exactly we are now (although it will lead to Duggan's best match since Mid-South so I can't complain too much). Each time I see Dustin and Vader work together,a nd they always had excellent match at this point, I think about the weirdo Roya Rumble 1998 matcg they had together, during the AFKAG phase.

Terry Funk
Can't wait for Dylan's monster post, as Terry Funk being the greatest wrestler ever is the biggest point we agree about.

I figure I will enjoy Evad vs DDP to a point, because I'm a DDP fan, and he's at his best when working with inferior/lazy workers, as his overachievness tendencies pushes him to drag a load beyond their usual capacities. Well, we're talking about the Equalizer, but still. Plus having him on a low/mid card feud just wouldn't be as infuriating as when he's interacting with Flair to build the biggest match in WCW history. He's still the worst thing thus far in 1994 (although Da Butcher is getting close).

That is true, but I take full responsability on this one. I know I was using a rather "offensive" word. I wouldn't put it in the same class of offensive as "faggot" or "nigger" myself, neither in English nor their French equivalents, not even close. It's not that I was not aware of it, although I don't think so. I think there's also a cultural gap of sorts and although our (in France, and Europe in general) society are becoming more and more politically correct, it's still not as bad as it is in the US. And yes, I consider it bad because at some point, you can't say anything anymore. I always thought the use of "african-american" to be stupid as hell for instance. But hey, that's another debate. Like I said the first time I replied, I will not use the term in that context anymore so to not offend anyone. Case closed. (as far as Asya goes, of course I understand the point, but I still found it ironic that in the course of two post the same guy was saying it was cool to see a woman get slapped around, basically, yet asked for more political correctness on my part. Doesn't matter if Asya was a shitty worker who didn't sell, really, the irony was in the two successive sentences)

Why didn't you said it the very first time in a polite way instead of talking to me like I was some offensive asshole to begin with ? Jeeez. I would have apologized for the offense and would have gently moved on. It would have saved us (and the infortunates who had to read this) a lot of bullshit from both parts.

Just a word : You were using the term as a pejorative. If I were referring to Adrian Adonis as a "faggot", it would not be okay, even if he were portraying a homosexual. Because "faggot" is a gay slur. Adrian Adonis' gimmick was a homophobic gimmick which purpose was to get homophobic heat from the babyface (although homophobic) crowd. By calling him a "faggot", you are into the whole dynamic of the gimmick which is to call him a "fucking faggot", which is hateful. Dave Sullivan's gimmick (like most mentally disabled gimmick in wrestling) is a babyface gimmick which is supposed to get sympathy from the babyface crowd because of his mental disability. It's not supposed to draw "retard" chants from the audience, as they are supposed to either feel for him or even identify with him as having the same icon and role model in Hulk Hogan. It's a childlike figure, or the image of what the bookers think a childlike figure should project from a mentally disabled grown up, and in that matter it is actually already pretty offensive toward the mentally disabled people. Me calling him a "retard" is pointing both the whole hypocrisy and unassumed irony of the whole thing, as if you are honest Dave's gimmick was one of a "retard" in that the definition of the character is precisely the idea that the people creating it have of mentally disabled people, the same way they picture gay characters in the most cliché manner imaginable. The difference being in their mind that gay = evil (because they are GAYS) while retards = good (because they are FUNNY), but this is basically the exact same sort of thinking and looking down at people in both cases. Thus the whole empathy/identification stuff being quite funny in that they are actually identifying Hulkamaniacs to their own idea of what a "retard" is. If you can't grasp the difference between the two, well, too bad.

Your double standarts are admirable. Your attempt at humour, not so much. Plus I don't know why you are still bitching about at this point since I already mentionned *twice* I wouldn't use the incriminated word anymore in that context so that I would not offend anyone. So basically you are kinda trolling me at this point. (as far as my girlfriend goes, I only beat her when the dumb bitch asks for it. Take that with or without a grain of salt, whichever suits you the best, really.)

She is a pro wrestler and had spent the last six month fighting men. So no it doesn't count. A man hiting a woman is projecting woman abuse, no matter what the circumstances. And it's not like WCW was a mutant freak show like ECW was, it was a mainstream program with kids watching. That's hateful. I don't remember if Sullivan was a heel (probably) or not, but it doesn't change the fact you thought it was pretty great to see a guy knocking the piss (your words) out of a woman. And at the same time, you're complaining because of a use of a word that you say is a "hateful slur" in that context (a post about a pro-wrestling character that is basically "slow", on a pro-wrestling board) as bad as "fag" or "nigger". I personnaly find it both ridiculous and hypocritical. So yeah, I'll stop using said word refering to Dave Sullivan's gimmick because I do not want to offense anyone (in case it would). That being said, I still can have a fat laugh out of the whole thing, thank you.

"A guy knocking the piss out of a woman was fucking great. Props to him for that one." (because she was a bodybuilder that does not count as woman abuse I guess ?) "You should refrain from using the word retard in that context, it's a hateful slur" That made my day. I wonder what if Sulli had been knocking the piss out of a retarded (in gimmick) woman. Hateful ? Not hateful ? But hey, since I'm a nice guy and don't want to offense anyone, I won't use the word "retard" about Dave Sullivan anymore nor the Hulkamaniacs anymore. Let's be PC. I will keep on using "this angle was retarded" though. (As far as Golden goes, this is exactly my feelings too : just bland as hell, nothing too bad nor too good about him)

Halloween Havoc 1994 is really the first "Hogan era WCW" PPV, with title matches involving Honky Tonk Man and Jim Duggan, Falir "retiring" and a whole post-main event basically time-warping into WWF circa 1990. The Dave Sullivan gimmick, complete with godawful "I wanna be a Hulkamaniac" theme song is actually pretty unintentionnaly funny, as the message it sends it basically that you really have to be a complete retard to be a Hulkamaniac. I guess no one got the irony, especially not the real retard Hogan look-alike in the crowd. Also, I think this is the first occurence of a clear showcase of complete disdain between Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan.

[1994-10-23-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan (Loser Must Retire Cage)
The match itself is pretty hot until the last mintutes, but Hogan is the shittiest babyface ever. He keeps his shirt with him in his tights only to choke Flair seconds into the match, then threatens the referee. Way to go ! Anyway, Masked Man, abusing a woman in bras, panties & stockings, a nonsensical "hadncuff the referee and beat him up spot" which kinda kill the purpose of winning the match, more abusing a woman because Hogan is just that kind of a babyface, swerve. Who booked this shit ? Russo ? The post-match is actually pretty hot in all its ridiculous glory, especially in retrospect, with Heenan dropping the "he butchered a friendship" several times, while Schiavone was forced to deliver the "this building is rumbling like there's an avalanche" or some nonsense. Hilarious. Of course Quake squashes Hogan, and you can send you get well postcards to Titan Tow... wait a minute. Too bad Fred Ottman wasn't on the roster anymore, I'm sure they could have renamed him Steamboat (awful pun intended). I'm gald this wasn't Flair's retirement match because the ending was godawful, and it was pretty much always in the plan for him to come back at some point in 1995 so I don't mind the disappear act at all. The post match revealed the direction of the new WCW for the year to come. It will be so bad I'll probably enjoy it more than watching Flair degrading himself in angles with Dave Sullivan and playing Hogan's bitch. (Sherri's jump from the top of the cage was insane, and she worked much harder than Hogan, who threw some really lazy looking shots in this match. And she had a great ass, yes, I said it.)
