Dunno, I don't watch sports apart from sumo. Sons-of are everywhere, it's social reproduction. What annoys me more than anything is the term "wrestling royalty". Considering how fucked up most pro-wrestling family are/were, that's kind of a backward compliment. And mostly, since when is aristocracy considered a good thing anyway ? I dunno, that triggers the French in me I guess.
  2. Thankfully I did not hallucinate ! Yeah, I guess this was a fumble and Hangman taking 10's place is the plan for the finals. Video game, DLC maybe ? People are already posting stuff about them leaving of course.

Nothing to do with what-aboutism. Those are two points I think about regularly. Just a opportunity to drop them in the 'Comment that don't warrant a thread' (EDIT : oh, well, the NWA thread, but really that's so much out of my radar I legit thought I was in the other thread !), much like much thoughts about pro-wrestling families in Japan and such. There's no big conversation about this issue that can be "muddied", especially considering you ended up making pretty much the same remarks anyway (gross, should have talked about Jake instead). I guess my first reaction is that I expected even worse, which says a lot about how much I think about the company (Tyrus, hi).
  4. Yep. Also, I sure hope #10 acting like his knee is fucked up will lead to him being replaced by Hangman Page eventually, leading to a final that actually looks like a final. I could have sworn that the graphics of Dark Order on Dynamite was Silver/Reynolds and a shadow, but I did not check back. Obviously it wasn't the case in the end, but there's no way they make it to the final without Hangman being involved, it would make zero sense.

BTW, and since this is related to the entire "wrestling royaltie" annoying trope that has me cringe every time I hear it (Hi Cody), I was thinking about this recently, the american wrestling business has a lot a wrestling families and second, third and more to come (with now a lot more male/female wrestlers couple) generation wrestlers. Mexico is obviously based on wrestling families. But Japanese pro-wrestling doesn't seem to have as much if any of this. Out of the top of my head, I can think of Rikidozan's son of course, Hana Kimura was the daughter of a joshi wrestler, Hashimoto's kid works in Z1, the son of Red Shoes Uno is a pro-wrestler and may become a star one day, but I can't really think of a lot of generational things with entire families of pro-wrestlers. I wonder what are the cultural/social reasons behind this. I know sumo has some sons of and grandsons-of, though not sure of the extent of it (not paying enough attention), but it's seemingly more than in japanese pro-wrestling.

What are you even taIking about ? I just said it was *gross* and stupid in the post just above and said they should have referred to Jake instead.
  7. Not so sure about that. But I could see Arn managing his son teaming with Pillman as heels, as they were pretty good together at Flair's retirement show (Pillman noticeably better than he probably ever looked in AEW). Or maybe an entire heel groupe with Dustin, although I can't really see Dustin being booed at this stage of his career.
  8. Totally cracked up at the Jade backstage segment, where she's attacked "from nowhere" by Athena. Basically she did not see Athena coming as she was right out of the frame ? I mean, we're here again ? Same kinda thing happened with the Hook segment, where 2.0 literally entered the frame as Hook was leaving (which was pointed out by Lexy, who's doing a really good job with what she's given). These backstage segments needs some serious work in term of pacing, they always come off rushed as hell (which is kind of an issue in general, they switch from one segment to another way too quickly sometime).

Well, that's not what I'd call "talking positively about Grizzly Smith contribution to pro-wrestling". From what I get and without having heard it, they referred to his family when his grand-daughter was debuting, and as he was the patriarch they name-dropped him, and although it's indeed gross and it would have taken two seconds to realize that saying "Jake Roberts' family" would have accomplished the exact same thing without making a really stupid reference, it's not exactly what's it's made out to be either. The cult of old-school territory wrestling is gonna make you say some good stuff about some abhorrent human beings. Which is one reason this period should always be considered with caution, to say the least. I wonder if people realize than whenever they cheer for the frogsplash (and pay tribute to Eddie), they actually pay tribute to a guy who was charged of raping an underage girl by proxy (Eddie first did the frogsplash to pay tribute to Art Barr, as it was his finisher).

Any clips of this ? Pro-wrestling as it used to be, indeed. Wait for Tyrus to win the damn title now.

The folklore is part of what makes it fun. At least that was it 25 years ago. Now everything is insults on Twitter, apologies and harassement (in whatever order). Until the next drama unfolds. Rince, repeat. There's no time to even produce a folklore, really. It's just a bunch of epidermic polarized reactions to everything.

Scalpers are parasites and should have their balls cut off. That's all I have for now.
  13. El-P replied to goodhelmet's topic in AEW
Of course. Like with everything else. The kinda "reverse" story is Hogan putting Verne into a facelook (I think) when Verne challenged him in the locker room. Of course the legit shooter was gonna humble the big dumb bass player with big muscles, except the big dumb bass player had been trained by Hiro Matsuda and was actually quite strong too.
  14. El-P replied to goodhelmet's topic in AEW
Doesn't matter. The folklore will always remains that Regal shoot on Goldy to humble him. And yeah, no matter what the version is, he still made a fool out of him anyway, whether that was intentional or not. And maybe the fact Regal wasn't supposed to have a competitive wrestling match (which Goldy really did not have until the DDP HH PPV match, as he pretty much disposed of everyone until then, including US champ Raven and WCW champ Hogan) actually qualifies as Regal "shooting" on him.
  15. El-P replied to goodhelmet's topic in AEW
No one except those involved will ever know for sure. The only thing sure about Goldy, is that he was an incompetent fuck who bought his own hype and did not take care of his opponents, ending the career of one of the greatest pro-wrestler ever. So, well, fuck him. I guess he'll be back for the next Blood Money show too.

Training in MMA doesn't mean you're worth a shit at it though. I always crack up when "experience" is equalled to actually being good at anything. Some people have been shit at their craft for their entire life. But that's beside the point. Another one was Joey Styles knocking the fuck out of JBL.
  17. El-P replied to goodhelmet's topic in AEW
Regal made him look like a complete fool and toyed with him for five minutes live on TV.

Goldberg was barely trained as a pro-wrestler. Ask Bret. He was a football player. It's not very hard to imagine a guy like Jericho who did train with the Harts, whatever that meant then (Bruce, I guess) and worked in several places before showing up in WCW, including Japan under Tenryu, knew some tricks about putting a big goof in a front facelock. Meanwhile : What did I say about idiots going on socials harassing people ?
  19. Yes indeed. Which is why I said the title "change" (interim my ass, I hate the whole interim stuff, same thing with Rosa who will apparently be out for a while as it was reported she had a severe back injury) added spice to the entire thing. That would be pretty glorious indeed. AEW needs something BIG, because the momentum is clearly in favor of WWE right now, and it will remain that way for a while. I don't see how it stops until at least Mania, unless Trip really fucks things up somewhere. But AEW also needs not to book in panic mode. Overall, a very interesting time.
  20. A fascinating tidbit from Meltz talking about Howard Brody, who just passed away, he was the guy who bought the NJPW tapes and sold those to Eurosport in the 90's. So he's the reason I was exposed pretty early on (I figured it was 93/94 or something that I first saw them, as I clearly remember Beefcake wearing his Mania 9 mask making an appearance, yeah, I know, not always the best selection) to Japanese pro-wrestling (Liger, Hase, Sasaki, Muto, Hashimoto, and those older looking guys in black tights, not a bad start) and a bunch of people that would be familiar to me when they would pop up later on in WCW and WWF (Benoit, Malenko, Eddie, Scorpio, Vader). A pretty important part of my early years as a fan, when I think about it.

A guy trying to awkwardly palm strike another dude while shouting "You can't call me fat !" is hardly a fight. But then again, most of the pro-wrestling folklore is making mountains out of molehills (there). The difference with 30 years ago is that stuff only was known in "dirt sheets" way after the fact, and then was part of folklore with various extrapolation/exaggeration on forums (not to mention early shoot interviews) months/years later once the internet was a thing. Now, people are immediately making huge deal out of stuff like this, Fightful is making an article, then another one, then F4 is gonna have a video clip of Alvarez talking about it, then people are gonna retweet it, then react to the reactions (make it about "lulz AED iz ded" or something) and so on, until the next drama occurs. Not to mention idiots taking sides and eventually harassing people on socials (I mean, Thunder Rosa is off, and although like I said her case is a bit vague, more power to her for not giving any second to assholes who will for sure act like trash toward her based on clips on Twitter and hearsays). I would hope since the deal is over now, the match is back on the PPV or pre-show, as it probably would have ruled. I have more interest in this one than in Jungle Boy vs Christian tbh.
  22. They run so many great match I forgot this happened. But nevertheless, I want it now, with the Dax of 2022 who is better and more over than ever as a babyface. Agreed. That's the one thing with them announcing the rematch. Although honestly, I wasn't really seeing Punk losing his title after coming back from injury and having no reign at all. That wasn't gonna happen. Except it did ! But they could not have ran this match at the PPV. So, in a way, this does add up spices to a match that basically kinda was already very predictable as far as the outcome went, because now the dynamic has been shuffled. End result should be the same, but the road to it was more exciting. And really now, this was also a TV rating bait. Which worked.
  23. There's that fellow Danielson too... Although interestingly enough, he doesn't have any family in the office anymore !

Actually, I mixed up "to make a mountain out of a molehill" with "the mountain gave birth to a mouse" (which is a French expression, but not exactly accurate in this case, although it's a matter of disproportion too) . My brain is so confused sometime.
  25. El-P replied to goodhelmet's topic in AEW
I can't even imagine such a non-event would even be talked about in a pre-social media world. There was a miscommunication, Eddie was off TV for two weeks or so, no one even talked about it before it was over anyway. People are really making mountains out of mice nowadays.
