After the opening angle it was obvious that nothing Punk/Cena related would happen until the end. I'm really interested to see if there was a solid/strong opening followed by a prolonged dip followed by a significant uptick at the end.

I think in the back of a lot of people's minds, be it smarks, marks, or inside WWE, was that Nexus would struggle as a long-term angle because of how green the Nexus members were. That led to a lot of counter-productive booking, but the bottom line is that the Nexus crew simply wasn't going to produce a bunch of superstars. It did a passable, profitable Summerslam buyrate. Who knows what they could have cobbled together to replace it with? That's even MORE the case this year, with how short the bench is in terms of headliners. Without having an angle with momentum among PPV-buyers, this year's Summerslam could have been a disaster. Last night's ladder matches were well-received, but they don't immediately make you want to see what happens at SSlam. Cena/Punk does. And, in contrast with Nexus, Punk comes across as a Big Deal who can be a threat to the Cenas of the world. Previously, Punk had gotten a couple title wins thanks to MitB wins, and his big feud was against Jeff Hardy, who was good at the box office but is someone that's "easy" to be competitive with. Hardy/Punk was profitable thanks to Hardy much more than Punk. This angle breaks Punk away from the upper-midcard pack. Even if it doesn't make that big an impact with the average mark, I think this could make *the office* have confidence in Punk long-term. If the WWE promotional machine really gets behind Punk in the way it didn't get behind most failed main eventers, he can absolutely become a draw.

I think by the point where you're doing sets of marginal matches, people will already have bought the yearbooks and thus will know what they like and don't like. So promotions/groups of promotions makes more sense to me.

Yes. This angle ESPECIALLY is designed for "watch the PPV for the payoff", unlike generic feuds where odds are the PPV match won't be conclusive/climactic. And it especially appeals to the hardcore PPV buyers. edit: Based on the song of the week, the phrase "What's up my Nikita?" sprang to mind. edit2: Okay that NOAH story at the end.... wow

Interesting that he says he'll be returning at MSG, which is Survivor Series. That'll be the 15th anny of his WWF debut at MSG, also Survivor Series.

Any Slinger singles matches on TV would have been clipped to hell. I certainly don't recall any.

Slinger was a 'good hand' who never amounted to anything and was a life-long loss post. I don't think anyone really has an opinion of him because he was so rarely in a match that could amount to anything.

Taue was solid as a rock. I've watched enough puro to know dogging when I see it; to watch one mediocre worker drag down the performances of those around him. That was NOT an issue with Taue. Least man in a match, yes, but usually only because SOMEONE had to be, and the others were tops in the world. He wasn't in the exact same tier as the other three, but he was an exceptionally good worker for quite a while and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath.

Watching a match like this *after* the '93 and '96 sets is not a good way to get a sense of why it was rated **** or more by Meltzer at the time. In 2011 we're used to quality 6-man tags from Japan. They were still reasonably novel in '92. Starting with Choshu's Army in '83, you only tended to get a couple good 6-or-more-man tags a year from Japan as a whole. Then AJ found a groove with the Jumbo/Misawa feud and it was good 6-mans every month.

Pretty much anything involving Fuyuki or Kuroda from '99-'01 FMW I've found to be very lacking. And since they're in a large amount of the big matches...

He faced Onita on 8/28/99 as Muta, with Onita doing a Muta ripoff. Mostly (that I can tell) Mutoh was doing a battle over nWo Japan with Chono, leading to Chono forming Team 2000 at the start of 2000.
