I watched this recently and this is really a pretty awesome little match. The only real knock on it is that you wish it had gone a little longer. It's really hard to get John Kronus to settle down and wrestle a real match where the high spots are tempered by a reasonable pace and actual control segments but Mikey succeeds bolstering my theory that he may have been top five in the States in 96. Really love Mikey's selling and comeback spots in this. It's also really nice to watch Mikey the reckless backyarder hitting ugly but effective flip planchas and careening around ringside off of big bumps instead of Mikey the workrate freak trying to be as smooth as his tag partner Tajiri. Give Kronus credit to as I thought he looked really good taking Mikey's offense and hitting his really well with nothing reaching overkill. The flip leg drop actually came across as a brutal finish. Good match.

This is another match where we have a disconnect. I have watched so many awesome matches the last couple of days that I thought this was merely ok. I actually thought that Kronus looked better than Mikey. I would have given them bonus points if they used the non-foldable chairs but Mikey had to go find a folding chair to ruin my good vibe. Anyway, a decent match that I can see giving a low-end nomination (mainly for Kronus, honestly) but nothing I would go out of my way to watch again. Also, 1996 was a pretty awesome year for wrestling overall and while I can see an argument for Scorpio being a Top 5 wrestler, I can't see Mikey in there. I need to watch more 96 Mikey but this match wasn't something I thought would boost that argument.

Wrestlers who could be Top 5 in other promotions based on the Yearbook project we are working on...

WWF

Steve Austin

Shawn Michaels (Just saying)

Owen Hart (Maybe the best comparison to Mikey in position on the card and the amount of time usually given in their matches)

WCW

Rey Mysterio

Chris Benoit

Fit Finlay

Lucha

El Hijo Del Santo

Psichosis

Juventud Guerrera

Japan

Kawada

Misawa

Taue

Kobashi

Hashimoto

Tenryu

TAKA

Guys like Kobashi, HBK, Juvi and others have gotten bum raps lately so no need to go in-depth about thier merits but I can't see a case for Mikey over most of these guys + Scorpio in ECW.

John Kronus vs. Mikey Whipwreck

Mikey looks good early hitting some big dives keeping Kronos on the defense and goes for the pin on numerous occasions trying to get a quick win but Kronos would get his opening and took over after a nice butterfly suplex off the middle rope. Mikey fought back though and hit a huge swanton from the top rope to the floor on a standing Kronus. Mikey then takes it back to the ring where he tries to get the win using some cradles but Kronos would overpower him then took him out with a somersault legdrop. This was a good solid match and I think it moves forward.
