DVD #10

5/1/88 (taped 4/21/88 )

Footloose vs. Mighty Inoue/Takashi Ishikawa (8:06 of 19:24 aired) - Reviewed on Classics.

Bruiser Brody/Jimmy Snuka vs. Yoshiaki Yatsu/John Tenta (5:27 of 9:51 aired) - No.

Jumbo Tsuruta/Hiroshi Wajima vs. Genichiro Tenryu/Ashura Hara (22:06 complete) - They came out hot with Jumbo and Tenryu looking like they wanted to finish each other in the first minute. The back-and-forth action kept up for the first 10 minutes until Tenryu and Hara settled into an extended torture section on Wajima. Hara helped their cause, taking Jumbo out of the match with a vicious slap. And they just went to town with lariat after lariat on Wajima. For his part, Wajima teased enough rallies to keep the crowd engaged. When Jumbo finally took the hot tag, he cleaned house with a bunch of high-velocity knees. They unnecessarily blunted the momentum of the comeback by having Tenryu and Hara punish Wajima with another run of lariats, but I liked the actual finish. Jumbo knocked Hara to the floor with a nasty boot to the face. As Hara tried to get back in, Wajima tackled him through the ropes and then staggered back to beat the count. It made for a nice payoff to the story of Wajima eating all that punishment. I could see this falling aside in the end, but they fleshed out a classic tag team structure with plenty of intensity and hard-hitting offense. So I'll throw it on the block.

5/8/88 (taped 4/22/88 )

Tom Magee vs. Hiroshi Wajima (2:27 complete) - Fuck this was awful.

Austin Idol/Arnold Skoaland vs. Great Kabuki/Yoshiaki Yatsu (7:59 complete) - Left no impression.

Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Big Bubba (6:23 complete) - Jumbo gave Bubba a healthy amount of offense, though none of it looked very good. The ending came a bit out of nowhere as Jumbo took the big man down into a leglock and submitted him. First time I've ever seen him end a match that way.

Genichiro Tenryu/Ashura Hara vs. Bruiser Brody/Tommy Rich (14:56 complete) - Yet another example of Brody walking through a bunch of stiff offense and then having all of his moves put over as the most devastating stuff ever. What an ass. Tenryu and Hara's win almost seemed like a fluke as Tenryu slipped in a powerbomb on Rich while Brody was preoccupied for a few seconds.
