Jumbo and Baba popped the crowd about 10 minutes in when Jumbo stopped short of a big boot and Baba responded by evading a high knee. Nice nod to how well they knew each other. Tenryu was really fun in this, just teeing off on the old guys with chops, forearms and enzuigiris. His exchanges with Dory were particularly fierce. Actually, the whole match was based on the younger guys taking the fight to their elders only to discover that the veterans often had answers for their big shots. I'm not a Dory fan, but he was excellent here, going shot-for-shot with Tenryu and continually finding clever ways to escape big moves and counter. For example, I thought it was neat when he ducked under Jumbo's Thesz Press and came up with a single-leg takedown to set up his spinning toe hold. As mentioned, this took a bit to get going, but I really enjoyed watching these teams go back and forth for 30 minutes. It's worth a look from everyone.
October 20, 201015 yr comment_5457455 Giant Baba & Dory Funk Jr. vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Genichiro Tenryu, AJ TV 4/7/84 (NJ TV 4/13/84- AJ TV 4/14/84) - A little headlock heavy early on with not much work inside. Where is Harley Race when you need him? Nice criss cross leads to a forearm from Dory. That looked cool. My god, Dory needs to be in brawls, not sucking wind sitting in holds that neither guy work in and out of. OK, Dory is fucking boring. He had Jumbo in an armbar and his forearm was right next to Jumbo’s face… he couldn’t just rake that forearm across the face, cause a little discomfort? It feels like Jumbo and Tenryu are moving in slow motion for these old dudes. We have seen these guys in some wars come 86-88. No need to include this snoozefest.
November 8, 201015 yr comment_5458099 PWF Tag Titles Tournament: Giant Baba & Dory Funk Jr. vs. Genichiro Tenryu & Jumbo Tsuruta (4/7/84) This was a little too long for me and while it was a good match this would have no chance on this set that is filled with some awesome tag matches. This would do well in other sets but not this one so no nomination.
