This is from SuperClash so it is an AWA promoted show. The opening mat work is standard but solid and the first big attack by Magnum with him hitting a dropkick and gorilla press was a good set up for the pending Flair cut off with Flair side stepping a second drop kick a little further down the road. Really liked Flair's offense as his forearms looked sharp, his butterfly suplex was sweet and the ab stretch spot with him switching between trunk pulling, hair pulling and then a full head clasp depending on the refs positioning was really cool. Flair ends up going for a second big knee drop but Magnum moves and immediately locks on a figure-four. Flair ends up blocking a second figure-four attempt and after what looks like a small edit Flair hits his shinbreaker and locks on a figure-four himself. Flair ends up getting rolled up for a nearfall on a second figure-four attempt and then gets bumped over the ropes to the floor with both guys brawling around ringside. Flair gets busted open and Magnum starts punching him in the face wildly. They end up going to the Flair bridge out spot after a random headlock takedown ending with a Magnum nearfall off of a backslide. Belly-to-belly off the ropes for a nearfall when Flair's legs accidentally whack the ref slowing the count. Magnum with a roll through but Flair reverses it and holds the tights for the finish. I liked this an awful lot. I hate to say this is the best match I've seen so far because I don't want to shit on the AWA homegrowns, but it was awfully good.

The only thing that took this bout down was the heat wasn't up to snuff.

The audio on that whole show sucks. There's 20,000+ people there and I would bet they were really into the match (and many others on the card), but you would think at times the card was conducted in the old TV studio.

I'd love to talk to someone that was actually there to get a feel for how this match was really received. i would bet tons better than it actually translates.

Plus, for visual ambience, they have 50 people at ringside instead of a regular, fuller amount. I never got that either unless it was a stip of them wrestling at Comiskey that only a certain amount of fans be allowed on the field so it didn't get wrecked. This match and card were very similar to the 8/9/80 Shea card, and neither lends itself to the overall feel of the card.

I was wondering why their was hardly anybody on the floor. From the camera angles, and the floor crowd from this bout the place looks empty.

NWA World Heavyweight Title: "Nature Boy" Ric Flair © vs. Magnum TA (9/28/85)

This was great stuff and it's one of the better matches on tape between these two. They were tearing it up at this time frame at the Omni which I was at those shows and they had some tremendous matches and this one hung right there with them. It was a shame that Flair & Magnum never had that definitive match on a big show but this is as close as you are going to get. Slam dunk nomination.
