Piper then sends in another taped promo this time calling out Carlos Colon and this is more extra material. King Tonga vs. Random Guy (February 1983) Total squash. Enrique Vera vs. Cuban Assassin (February 1983) Another good win for Vera. Jose Miguel Perez vs. Dick Steinborn (February 1983) Steinborn is real aggressive here and just chunks Perez over the top rope for the DQ. Terry Gibbs & "Nature Boy" Buddy Landell vs. Pierre Martel & Johnny Rivera (March 1983) The tecnicos put up a good fight here but the gringos take the match. El Gran Apollo vs. Random masked guy (March 1983) Competitive match with Apollo winning. Crazy Luke Graham vs. Random guy (March 1983) Squash. Enrique Vera vs. Barrabas (March 1983) After a tough battle, Barrabus would backdrop Vera over the top rope for the DQ. "Nature Boy" Buddy Landell vs. Random Guy (March 1983) Clipped up. El Gran Apollo vs. Random Guy (March 1983) Easy win for Apollo. Terry Gibbs vs. Chicky Starr (March 1983) Chicky is young here and puts up a good fight but loses. Enrique Vera vs. Mr. Tempest (March 1983) One of the better TV matches I've seen so far but not a nomination. Crazy Luke Graham vs. Johnny Rivera (March 1983) Glorified squash. Enrique Vera vs. Random Guy (March 1983) Easy win for Vera. El Gran Apollo vs. Iranian Assassin (March 1983) Competitive match with Apollo winning.
June 30, 201312 yr comment_5549449 Angel Maravilla was the other Castillo brother (Raoul Castillo). Piper promos are always good for extra consideration. The matches appear to be solid enough for TV, but not enough. I guess it depends if there is someone of note in a match it could be considered as an Estra just to show them in the PR setting.
October 18, 201311 yr comment_5567798 Piper promo I could see as an extra. Enrique Vera vs. Cuban Assassin Notable because Assassin almost kills himself missing on a flip senton for the finish. Well, not really notable, but a borderline "holy shit" moment which wasn't common in the PR studio. Jose Miguel Perez vs. Dick Steinborn This wasn't super exciting, but I kind of liked the early angle they were running with each guy trying to one up the other with relatively flashy spots for the era. This was chugging along fairly well and then it just ended on the DQ which was too bad. Terry Gibbs & "Nature Boy" Buddy Landell vs. Pierre Martel & Johnny Rivera Man I loved Budro's pissed off punches as he throws them with his whole body as if he's trying to kill his opponent, not just hurt him. This match was really upbeat and had good heat. I liked the heels both as big bumpers and well oiled machine ass kickers. Landell killing Rivera with the jumping knee was sick and a great spot. Later the heels kill Rivera with this combination of power offense that is both really impressive looking and violent as fuck. I dug this, but it lacked enough face offense for me to go to bat for it. El Gran Apollo vs. Random masked guy This was okay as was the competititve squash with Luke Graham that followed and included one really good bump. Enrique Vera vs. Barrabas Barrabas has the look and feel of a crowbar which is always going to appeal to me. Vera looks like Ron Starr's long lost brother in this which also will always appeal to me. This had no ebb and flow and a stupid finish, but I still enjoyed watching it because of Barrabas throwing shootish looking kidney punches and shin kicks. Landell is such an awesome squash match worker, fuck I forgot how much I love him. Terry Gibbs vs. Chicky Starr Cool to see a young Chicky Starr, but i want to see Chicky Starr as the ultimate piece of shit heel, not a plucky babyface with a Soviet Union inspired singlet. This wasn't bad at all really, but it's not the Starr we know and love. Enrique Vera vs. Mr. Tempest Opening exchange here was pretty exciting and flashy for this era of WWC tv. After that this had some decent psych I guess, but I didn't think it was particularly good even by the standards of WWC tv. El Gran Apollo vs. Iranian Assassin This was fine. Apollo had a nice dropkick.
