It's funny, I was just talking to CJ last night about my temp job with the government and how they'll wait to the last minute to tell me if I have a permanent job or not.

Well today at about 2pm I found out that today is my last day of working for them.

Well fuck me with a baseball bat.

Nothing like waiting for the last possible second to tell someone they're in the midst of their last day.

It's all good though, I already called the temp agency and signed up with unemployment so I'll have some cash to carry me over till I find something else.

Still, besides getting the rug pulled out from under me, what really pissed me off is the whole time I was working there all I heard was "we always hire the temps first" and then proceeded to hire 3 (!) outside people in the department I worked at and was moved out of because there was no work.

Oh well, at least now I can catch up on my Adult Swim viewing.

That sucks, dude. Question: Were the 3 who were not in the department still within the government nonetheless? And was it through a competition?

I'm curious about any similarities and differences between the Canadian and U.S. Government hiring policies.

Sek: me: "we should know about hiring by the end of march" other temp: "we're not hiring till later in the year"

PR0NFAQ: you'll all be laid off by April.

Sek: the only thing that sucks is the temp agency won't place you with a new job until you get a definate end date

Sek: which you'll never get in a gov. job

Sek: cause that would mean the boss would have to answer you

PR0NFAQ: well, you can count on getting an answer by the end of March. it'll be MARCH 31st but you'll get your answer.

Sek: true

PR0NFAQ: is that not the start of some new fiscal period?

PR0NFAQ: April 1?

Sek: i believe so

PR0NFAQ: that's why i say you'll know for sure by then

PR0NFAQ: also why I said you'll all be laid off by then

Sek: well the one thing i have going for me is they have to keep that department fully staffed

PR0NFAQ: i was only kidding about being laid off but if they do, it'll be April 1/March 31 that they'll do it

Sek: *gets tin can of pencils ready just in case*

PR0NFAQ: i only say that because i've been in your position, jerked around and lied to til the last minute

This is why temp jobs suck. If there are even whispers you might be out of work, especially near the beginning/end of a fiscal period, my advice would be to start looking for another job IMMEDIATELY. Because they won't tell you far enough in advance what your situation is going to be (to keep you working there until they no longer need you, knowing full well the entire time your time is done) for you to make any kind of new plans. And that bites. It sucks to be in that position, but I played that game for so long, you begin to learn the ropes. Temp jobs RARELY become permanent, full-time positions anyway.

As far as I know, the 3 people were just hired off the street.

It's either that or move to Porn Valley with a hot girlfriend and get in the biz together.
