Posted June 7, 200520 yr comment_2425730 The MLB Amateur draft begins today at 1pm ET, with MLB.com providing live coverage beginning a half hour beforehand. While players drafted do not see the Majors for a few years, a team's performance in the Draft will go a long way towards determining the future success of that team. And if nothing else, it will at least let you know what players to look out for in Short Season A ball this year (I'll be attending a New Jersey Cardinals game in two weeks).

June 8, 200520 yr comment_2436534 With 5 first round picks including the supplementals...the Marlins went loco and selected 5 pitchers, 4 of which are high school pitchers. Not sure what to think. The success rate is low, but apparently they all have pretty high ceilings. I guess we'll see how it worked out in 5 years or so.
June 8, 200520 yr comment_2436752 Wait, the MLB has their draft DURING the season? How is that possible when NCAA baseball isn't even done yet?
June 8, 200520 yr comment_2438322 The MLB draft is like no other major sports draft. Instead of the right now, picks are selected with the next half decade or so in mind; not the next year or two.
June 8, 200520 yr comment_2438426 Instead of the right now, picks are selected with the next half decade or so in mind; not the next year or two. The NFL and NBA are selected with the same mindset -- it just happens to be easier from players of those sports contributing within a year or two.
June 8, 200520 yr Author comment_2438590 I think the mindset is that these players leave college or high school ball shortly, and this allows the MLB teams to assign players to the minor leagues, eliminating downtime immediately after the draft.

Generally teams are looking to play the percentages. If one of those pitchers becomes a star, it is a success for the Marlins. Anything after that is a bonus.
June 9, 200520 yr comment_2452895 My cousin Ahmed Shelton is supposed to be drafted by the Astros, they told him look for a call by Sunday. Hopefully, we'll see. The Braves also invited him to New York at the end of June to workout with the team. He threw 93 in front of scouts earlier this month/end of last. That's all.

I assume he went undrafted over the last two days (I don't see his name anywhere), so as long as he entered the draft, he is now free to join any team as an amateur free agent. The trick is finding a team. It is a difficult task to make it from this point, but I wish him the best.

He's going to West Virginia this Sunday and said 22 teams will be represented there. We will see.
