Posted February 21, 201114 yr comment_5465739 Brian Knobbs v. Earthquake Ferris I was amused by the quick opening spots. Knobbs wrestling in a singlet also made me chuckle. Seriously these guys were working hard and did some nice stuff off the ropes. I liked Knobbs fat man attack on Ferris arm. Ferris avalanche spot looked good and the Ferris wheel airplane spin and big splash finish were cool. This was fun. Boris Zhukov v. Steve O Steve O dominates with a head lock early and the work is decent enough. Boris comes back and works on the arm with headbutts. The armwork is not great but it is steady and Steve O does a pretty good job selling. Steve O's nearfall run was decent and he ends up missing a splash getting elbowed and pinned. This was okay. Larry Zbyszko/Super Ninja/Mr. Saito v. Scott Hall/Greg Gagne/Leon White We already have this clipped elsewhere. Slightly better in full but still not a anomination. Curt Hennig v. Nick Bockwinkel We already have this.
May 18, 201114 yr comment_5471340 Earthquake Ferris vs. Brian Knobbs (12/25/86) This was fine for what it was as it was two big men moving around the ring pretty well especially Ferris for his size. Boris Zuhkov vs. Steve O (12/25/86) Jerry Sags is the referee here which is funny considering his haircut. The drunk fans in the front row at times is more entertaining than the match which was again fine for what it was. Boris really works over Steve's left arm and Steve makes a comeback but gets screwed at the finish as Adnan pulled his foot off the bottom rope as Boris had him pinned. Mr. Saito, Super Ninja (Ryuma Go), & Larry Zbyszko vs. Greg Gagne, Scott Hall, & Leon White (12/25/86) Sags has to refere this match as Zbyszko won't work unless Scott LeDoux was removed as ref. Leon White the babyface is fun as he works the apron like a Robert Gibson type as the heels work over Gagne. This is Saito's first match back in the AWA in 2 years and he looks good here working harder than anyone else on his team. Everyone is brawling at the finish as there is salt involved leading to Hall getting pinned. LeDoux brawls with Zbyszko after the match and Leon gives Sags a bodyslam on the floor which was great. This was pretty decent considering who was involved. AWA World Heavyweight Title - SR: Billy Robinson: Nick Bockwinkel © vs. Curt Hennig (12/25/86) Bock is relentless working over Curt's left leg early in the match as he wants to weaken it for the figure-four but Curt would get intervals of offense here so there wasn't any clear advantage by either man. Curt countered the leg work by working over Bock's left arm smashing it into the ringpost among other things and that's when he would take over here showing the intensity that would lead to his heel turn soon. Both men kept trading the offensive advantage as the fans were becoming split in their affection as both men traded nearfalls. This is where the match became a battle of two guys that were putting all they had out there to put the other one away and it had an epic feel to it. Sure enough we would get a ref bump as Bock hit Billy who tumbled to the floor and it was right after that that Hennig would backdrop Bock over the top rope to the floor as he tried a piledriver with Bock landing on Billy. Hennig would go up top hitting a dropkick but Robinson would pat Hennig on the back with everyone thinking that was the count but Billy was telling him that it was a DQ instead. Hennig calls bullshit and the fans agree but this was still a great match. Easy nomination.
