Buddy Rose vs. Rip Oliver

- Billy Jack is the referee. Oliver works a headlock and jaws with Billy Jack. It picks up when Buddy takes over on offense. Oliver goes back and focuses on the midsection which was injured from the chair attack. Continuity! Nice stretch with Buddy winning the 1st fall with a roll-up.

- 2nd fall, Buddy works over the leg which he hinted at in the 1st fall. I love how the work is always simple (it is 1984) but they always mix it up and keep it interesting. Really cool ending with Rose turning the tide and nailing Oliver with a foreign object for the win. Not my favorite Rose match and the two straight falls can hurt it but the work was too good not to move it through.

The first fall was a testament to the power of simple stuff, credibly delivered and sold. Oliver's use of body work to cut off Buddy's rally was a smart nod to his attack from earlier on the disc. Buddy then played his hand by going after Oliver's leg, with Rip selling the damage nicely. Oliver turned the tide again, introducing the all-important loaded thumb in the process. But Buddy took the fall with a nifty flash roll-up. Of course, he went back to Oliver's leg in the second fall. Oliver again used the loaded thumb to cut Rose off. But he riled up Billy Jack in the process, giving Buddy the opening he needed to land his own thumb for a second straight fall. I liked the logical way they introduced the key elements of the match in the first fall and then paid them off. I also liked face Buddy winning by using his heel rival's favorite tactic. Perfect for the character. This might have built more drama over three falls, but it was a solid piece of work. Nomination.

Simple and effective is absolutely right. The big moments in this are pretty damn sweet, like Buddy standing on Oliver's head, his back elbow, the teased Buddy bump to the floor, hell even Oliver's punts. But what I really liked about this first fall was how well those spots were built to and strung together. Billy Jack's reffing is kind of annoying at times, but I don't think it hurts the match at all. Buddy's selling of the damage Oliver inflicts is awesome and Oliver really sells his leg to to his credit. Everything from the Buddy bump into the steel, through the spinning backbreaker to the roll up was excellent.

Buddy's shoulder selling after the fall carries into the second fall, but Buddy was able to reverse the tide by attacking Oliver's still weak wheel. Great moment as Rip tries to yank Buddy's hair while he has a leg lock applied to Rose just whacks him with an elbow. Rip fights back with the illegal thumb shots. Okay that finish was a pretty clever way to do the title switch and over all this was damn good shit
