What you expect from these two, just pounding the living shit out of each other. There is some especially great work in the corners, with both guys unloading where their backs touch the turnbuckles or they force their opponents back. Their MSG match did very well on the first set, and I imagine this will do similarly well.

One or two odd spots but other than that this was pretty god damned solid slugfest wrestling. Everytime you thought it met settle in a bit Ronnie who just fucking kill Greg with what looked (and sounded) like full force punches right to the face. I know some people don't like the Heartbreaker gimmick but I love it and thought the finish was a clever way of giving the fans a clean finish without making the face look weak. Typically awesome fight between two of the best "feels like a real fight" guys ever.

Greg Valentine vs. Ron Garvin (Toronto, Maple Leaf 10/8/89)

-          They engage in a battle of supremacy almost like 2 sumo wrestlers. Then they push each other… hard. Hammer really stalling early. Not a bad move since he knows they are going to have a slugfest in 15 seconds. Three Hammer elbow drops get a two. Hammer tries a piledriver attempt but Garvin won’t lift so he does a Pedigree variation for two. Damn. Slugfest. Garvin drives Hammer’s head to the mat. 2 headbutts and a 2 count. This is always nasty. Now Garvin trying his piledriver. Turns it to a sunset flip. Hammer tries his sunset flip and gets the face punch for his troubles. Front facelock. Slugfest right into the Garvin stomp. No Sharpshooter today. Same counter as always… punch to the face. In this match, Hammer hooks in the figure 4. Garvin is damaged. Hammer to the top but thrown off. Garvin crumples in a heap. Garvin gets the shin brace off but Hammer rolls him up when distracted. This is the exact finish of the 12/88 match. Look, this match was awesome but it was very much a greatest hits of the first three. If we go on match quality alone, it goes up but I feel like the other three will be adequate representation of the feud.

EDIT REWATCH:

Toronto does not have the frantic pace of the 9/30 MSG match. Again, we start with an abbreviated version of the MSG match. But then it becomes a different version when Hammer does a modified pedigree… then Garvin does some head rams in the mat and then a splash! Garvin attempts the piledriver and was thwarted. Garvin with the front face lock, driven to the corner and then the fisticuffs and the Garvin stomp. Garvin goes for the Sharpshooter in both and poked in the eye for both. Hammer does a modified king of the mountain ramming the forearms on Garvin on the apron. After the sleeper hold, in this one, Garvin bites Hammer’s face. He goes for the Sharpshooter again but is punched in the face. Usually Garvin punching Valentine in the face. This is the first match where they get the figure 4 in. This legitimately feels like a sequel and not the same match. I couldn’t see it until I watched them all back to back. Garvin does the same press slam of Hammer off the to but can’t even go for thje pin as his leg collapses. Garvin gets the shin guard off during the match and the roll-up from the first MSG match allowed Hammer to win. At least Garvin hit him over the head before Hammer ran off. This belongs on the set. IT was unique enough to play well.
