Posted April 20, 201114 yr comment_5470168 Kendo Nagasaki & Mr. Pogo vs. Huracan Castillo Jr. & Victor Jovica (January 1988) The Japanese tied up the tecnicos in the corner and were pounding them until the Invaders ran out for a brawl. Next we get a video for Hercules Ayala. Super Black Ninja (Keiji Muto) vs. El Vikingo (January 1988) Squash. "Hangman" Bobby Jaggers & Dan Kroffat vs. Maelo Huertas & Armando Salgado (January 1988) Fairly easy win for the rudos. Next we get a feud recap video for Invaders vs. Kendo/Pogo. Bruiser Brody vs. La Guardia (January 1988) Squash. "Soulman" Rocky Johnson vs. El Rebelde (January 1988) Easy win for Rocky. Then we get a Carlos Colon video. Next we get Chicky Starr Sport Shop with Afa of the Wild Samoans. Then we get a video for Super Black Ninja. Definite extra. Afa vs. Carlos Ocasio (January 1988) Squash. Then we get a Iron Sheik video. TNT vs. Gran Mendoza (10/7/87) Spotlight match for TNT. The next show starts with clips of Kendo & Pogo winning the WWC Tag Titles from the Invaders on 1/16/88. WWC TV Title: The Invader © vs. Super Black Ninja (January 1988) Ninja has Kendo & Pogo on the floor to start the match but they are asked to go to the back which they do. This starts with some basic matwork before Muto took over working over Invader in the ring then taking him to the floor where he choked him with a camera wire before taking it back to the ring. Invader would soon fire it up making a comeback where he locked on the sleeper which brought out Pogo and that brought out Invader III to take him out with a chair as the match continues. Kendo then came out to attack Invader III and the ref would get bumped as that happened with Invader I getting an inside cradle on Muto but with no ref. Another referee would come out as Muto took back over hitting the moonsault but Invader I would kick out so Muto would hit a missile dropkick with Invader getting his foot on the bottom rope but Profe knocked it off and the referee ruling Muto the winner. The original referee though saw the whole thing and they argued as the fans went nuts but the decision stayed the same. I wish I could nominate this because it was one of the better TV matches I've seen but there were some really slow points to start so not a nomination.
June 30, 201312 yr comment_5549508 If the TV title match is the one I think it is, the title would be held up and Invader and Muta would face off in a cage for the vacant title.
November 13, 201311 yr comment_5572326 This disc actually starts with more detailed clips of the Colon/Sheik bloodbath. If we were going to represent this with an extra this would be the better clip. Kendo Nagasaki & Mr. Pogo vs. Huracan Castillo Jr. & Victor Jovica Watching Mr. Pogo work with so much intensity and snap is just funny. He is so much better than Nagasaki in terms of offense and timing it's actually hilarious to think about. Jovica ends up making a run and a brief FIP follows. He looked really old here, though the heels tried to make him look credible. The match itself was decent, but the post-match with The Invaders and the Japanese brawling all over the place was really fun. Ayala video might be an extra Super Black Ninja (Keiji Muto) vs. El Vikingo Vikingo's rainbow tights are really bright here. Muta is really fun in these squash matches as he always works with extra snap, does something novel and gives the guys a little before putting them away. "Hangman" Bobby Jaggers & Dan Kroffat vs. Maelo Huertas & Armando Salgado In some ways this was more senseless and sloppy than the other Jayhawks matches, but in other ways I thought it was the best of the bunch. Whereas the other bouts so far have seen them stooging for the bulk of the show, here they controlled a lot of the match and they did it with some pretty sick offense. Jaggers was throwing these mean and blunts strikes and Kroffat did some crazy shit including a sick razor's edge of all things. The real star of this though was Huertas who was doing these flashy escapes, dropkicks and spinning arm drags. This went right at five minutes and didn't have the build of the other matches so I can't quite nominate it but it makes me wish we had more of the Jayhawks run in PR. Video package of the Invaders and Kendo/Pogo feud. They cover several matches in the feud in clipped fashion. I could see this as an EXTRA Bruiser Brody vs. La Guardia Kind of nuts to watch a Brody squash from PR in 88. This is exactly what you would expect. "Soulman" Rocky Johnson vs. El Rebelde This is kind of notable just because it is an appearance of Johnson so late, but it's not particularly good. The Colon video is clips interspersed with him running through the streets. EXTRA The Flower Shop with Afa mainly just made me realize how Piperesque Chicky was. Agree with Kris that the Super black Ninja video is an EXTRA AFa squash sucked and the Sheik video was okay and a possible extra TNT vs. Gran Mendoza This was crazy as Mendoza got a lot of offense and actually had TNT on the ropes. Then TNT won with a superkick that Mendoza dove into. Really great finish, to a strange match. The clip of the tag switch with Invades and Pogo/Kendo was okay and was followed by a conversation with Invader 3 and El Profe. The Invader © vs. Super Black Ninja This match was way better on paper than it was on practice. That is not to say this was a bad match because it wasn't, but if you had told me these guys would get this much time (probably around twelve or thirteen minutes shown) I would have thought it would have been a lock for the set and this really wasn't. I actually didn't mind the slow build at all an they did some good stuff in it, the problem I had was that the transition to the stretch run felt kind of flat. I will say that the last several minutes of this were amazing and true high drama as they had done a good job establishing the significance of the match over the course of the show, the crowd was going batshit, the ringside brawling added to things, and they had some really good false finishes. Even I bought the moonsault near fall and marked out when Invader kicked out. And then amazingly Muta won basically cleanly with another big spot. Given the novelty of this, the rare length for a tv match and the super hot stretch run, I would argue that this deserves real consideration for the set. It's the sort of thing people would want to see. But I don't know that it would place all that high on my ballot.
