Debeers gets his mustache used against him by the rockers. A sparring session breaks out in the early going. The Blaster is in the match. Silo chasing around Buddy Rose was hilarious. The big eliminations of Larry, Blackwell and Debeers were well milked and had huge heat. Buddy being left with two Russians against Gagne, Rockers and Hennig and begging off in the corner was great. Marty eliminates himself after Buddy holds on to the top rope on a crossbody attempt. The fucking Russians accidentally headscissor each other. Shawn does a skin the cat spot eliminating Gordenko but stupidly eliminates himself too. Buddy does his fucking backward head bump in a fucking battle royal! Buddy finally gets eliminated on a huge bump over the top and it comes down to Hennig and Smirnoff of all people. Hennig gets posted and blades. He sells some, makes a reversal and then Smirnoff takes a shockingly huge bump off of a dropkick for the Hennig win. I thought this was a shit ton of fun. Seriously one of the most fun matches I've watched.
May 22, 201213 yr comment_5503260 Battle Royal Solid Nomination - AWA Super Mix #37: The AWA on World Pro Vol. 4 - Dylan and I have a major disconnect on this. The first half was really a nothing match trying to get everyone out as soon as possible. I thought the Russians were actively bad. Smirnoff moves…so… slow. Also, I never noticed before but that Gagne kneedrop was softer than a baby’s ass. I also didn’t like the over-reliance on going through the middle rope. It would have been much cooler to see Hennig fight to keep from falling after being posted by Smirnoff if there was ever any real threat of being tossed. No vote.
May 29, 201213 yr comment_5504553 I'm hopeful a battleroyal makes the set simply because it was such an AWA staple. The Battleroyal series every year always did big business and was a really definitive part of the AWA's year. I'm not necessarily pushing this one as my favourite, just noting I hope one makes the set.
May 29, 201213 yr Author comment_5504602 No. The battle royal where Blackwell turns face is relevant enough to be an Extra (in fact the finish HAS to be an Extra) and there was a bunkhouse battle royal they constantly showed clips of that apparently doesn't exist in full which is a shame because it looked awesome. But this - a match that smokes, decimates, destroys, et. something like the Wahoo/Manny handheld - is the only battle royal I thought was even borderline.
