Posted June 13, 200520 yr comment_2504070 So, it's official -- September 24, I'll be on the road to a new life in a new place, as I'm moving to New Jersey. I looked at Mapquest to see the best route to take, because I'd really like to drive through the mountains and along the coast, if only briefly. I'm coming from Arkansas, and I'm willing to split the trip up over two days. Anyway, Mapquest says it's a 1200 mile drive, and I'm willing to take a bit longer trip if I'll get to see more on the way, and I was wondering if anyone familiar with the area can recommend a good route. I was going to take the Mapquest route, but that would suck -- it would basically be Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey. Yeah, THAT'S fun. I'd love to go through DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia if it wouldn't set me back and make the trip impossible to make in just a few days. Maybe if there's a website that shows the scenic route one can take instead of just the most direct way, that would be helpful. Any ideas? Thanks.
June 13, 200520 yr comment_2504163 Driving across PA on the Turnpike (Interstate 76) can be a blast if you're into small town life. There's all sorts of Amish communities and farms along Central PA that are not only interesting to visit, they also offer the best food and crafts you can find.
June 13, 200520 yr comment_2506024 You're going from Arkansas to New Jersey? Loss: Helping to define the phrase "out of the frying pan and into the fire".
June 13, 200520 yr comment_2509019 Take whatever highway goes east and get on I-95 and go right up the coast. If you want to go through Baltimore, DC, and a few other cities then that's the way to go. It'll take a while but you'll see a bunch of stuff.
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2509132 Loss should go on a NMB US tour. I think 95% of the board lives in PA, MD, and the NYC area.
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2509218 If he's in the Boston area and breaks down I know a great place to rent a car...
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2509745 Loss, if there are certain part sof the country you want to see, why don't you Mapquest from Arkansas to that particular spot. So instead of going from Arkansas to Jersey, go from Arkansas to DC then from DC to Philly or whatever.

June 14, 200520 yr Author comment_2516136 My only concern is that Flyboy would want me to buy his lunch.
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2516154 Flyboy lives in Texas, you would have to drive the opposite direction.
June 14, 200520 yr Author comment_2516187 My only concern is that Flyboy would follow me and want me to buy his lunch.
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2516463 As long as he doesn't make a pitstop in San Antonio and ask me to buy his breakfast tacos.
July 27, 200520 yr Author comment_2995479 Looks like Some Guy's suggestion is the one I'm taking. But since I drive a nearly six-year old Toyota Echo with 108,000 miles on it, I'm afraid to drive through the Smokies, and since my best friend isn't going to be able to make the trip with me, I'm more concerned with just getting there quickly. So this is basically the route I'm taking, seeing lots of the US I haven't seen before: Little Rock, AR --> Memphis, TN --> Tupelo, MS --> Birmingham, AL --> Atlanta, GA --> South Carolina --> North Carolina --> Virginia --> DC --> Maryland --> Pennsylvania --> Delaware --> New Jersey If anyone sees a confused guy trying to read a map, drink a bottle of water and drive at the same time going frantically across the Eastern side of America on Labor Day weekend, wave at me. I'll try to wave back.
July 27, 200520 yr comment_2996599 You can wave while juggling a map, bottle of water, and drive? Wow...shame I live in MA or I'd keep an eye out for ya
July 27, 200520 yr Author comment_2996733 If you see me, I've obviously gone the wrong way. And yeah, I can do all sorts of thing while driving.
