Posted June 14, 200520 yr comment_2517871 Well, I want to know what female artists everyone likes? Maybe you guys can expand my musical horizons. To be honest, I listed a few in the Music News thread and I don't know if any of them would crack my top 20 although some of their songs may crack my favorite song list.
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2518202 One of the first obvious picks that comes to mind is Dusty Springfield doing "Son Of A Preacher Man", but I probably don't even have to sell that song on anyone. There's also "River Deep Mountain High" by Tina Turner and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by the Supremes from that era. In the 70s, I like some Carole King. "So Far Away" is probably my favorite, and I think it's aged better than most of her music. Tapestry was an amazing album for the time period. More of a female-led band, but Blondie also rocked the house, and I don't think they have any songs I don't like, except for maybe "Call Me". I'll add more later. Semi-related to this subject, goodhelmet, who's the most commercially successful woman of all time? It seems like I read that Barbara Streisand is once, but I wasn't sure if that was true. I've also heard that Janet, Whitney and Mariah have sold more albums than Madonna, but I don't know if that's true. I'll also pimp "Money Changes Everything" by Cyndi Lauper here. I think it's her best song. It actually has a sound that's becoming popular again these days with bands like The Killers, but I think that song is better than any of their songs.
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2518351 I counting female-led bands here too, so here goes... I've always liked the Pretenders, particularly "Brass In Pocket", "Human", "Don't Get Me Wrong", and "Middle Of The Road". In a way, they're like Blondie in my book in that, as Loss said, there's not really a song of theirs a really dislike. Some of my favourite Blondie songs include "Heart Of Glass", "Rapture", "Atomic". She gets ripped upon quite a bit here in her hometown, but I do consider myself an Alanis Morisette fan, seeing as I followed her back in her days of "You Can't Do That On Television". She's not the type whose stuff I can listen to all day, but she does have a talent in acerbic writing, which shows on "Jagged Little Pill". The only other Alanis CD I have is "Supposed Former Infactuation Junkie" which isn't quite as good as her first but may be better for, say, casual fans. Kind of like the equivalent of "The Eminem Show" after "The Marshall Mathers LP" (if that makes any sense at all...). I also might be in the minority, but I also like Sheryl Crow. Saw her live a couple years ago, and it was a pretty good show. Very nice voice, and lots of times, she can give you pretty good feel-good music, which you need every now and then. I'll add more when I think of some.
June 14, 200520 yr comment_2518412 Sheryl Crow certainly has her moments. "My Favorite Mistake" caught me by complete surprise at the time because it was so good.
June 14, 200520 yr Author comment_2519363 I have to eliminate Sheryl Crow because of her god-awful bastardized versions of "Sweet child O Mine" and "The First Cut is the Deepest". I used to like both of those songs. Loss mentioned Dusty Springfield and I really enjoy her stuff also.

June 16, 200520 yr comment_2537515 Early Tori Amos is probably my favorite female artist of all time. These days, Aimee Mann is quite good. And Bjork of course.
June 16, 200520 yr comment_2541331 I like Garbage. They have a female lead vocalist. Veruca Salt is OK too. Hell, I still listen to the Cranberries. I'll always rock out to 10,000 Maniacs. I like a few Fleetwood Mac songs too. Let's see, um, what else? Tina Turner could wail. She definitely had some pipes, legs and energy. I'm not gonna front, I thought Cher had some beats too. I like a couple Pink songs. They're catchy. Lita Ford was the hype shit in the 80's. That's the type of shit that I grew up on. Joan Jett, Jefferson Airplane, Erykah Badu. There's a lot that I like. By far my favorite is Heart though.

June 16, 200520 yr comment_2541544 What's everybody think of these? PJ Harvey Luscious Jackson Veruca Salt Lauryn Hill
June 16, 200520 yr comment_2542381 I don't know what happened to Lauryn. After being a gifted emcee and the superior lyricist of her male-dominated crew, the Fugees, she decided to sing through most of her debut solo album, the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill which found MUCH success. After that, she simply went insane. I don't know what her deal is or what the heck she's doing now. She did show up on HBO's Def Poetry last Friday night sporting a cool afro wig. And I happen to know that Loss' favorite female group is DREAM and his favorite song their "This Is Me (Remix)."
June 17, 200520 yr comment_2551963 Dream and the "This is me" remix are delightful. Whatd you guys think of the most recent making the band with all the lil half naked white girls?

Fugee album on tap for 2006/2007, Pras album dropping this year, Lauryn is allegedly working with Kanye West on an album for 2006. Wyclef, Pras and Lauryn are allegedly back on good terms, it's just a matter of putting in the studio time now, it seems.
