Posted March 1, 200520 yr comment_954952 I normally watch the show because I'm a pop culture nut and it's become a phenomenon, but no one has ever come from the show that I'd even think about seeking down outside of the show or that I'd call myself a fan of. The same appplies this year, except for one guy, who is probably way too good to be in this competition. Bo Bice did a fucking ALLMAN BROTHERS song. I never thought I'd see the day that happened on Idol, but even more than that, he did it well. He nailed it. Since the audience is made up of mostly teenage girls, I don't know how well he'll do in the long run, since he's more of a blues rocker and he's not much to look at, but he's easily the most talented person I've ever seen come from that show. What's he going to break out next -- Stevie Ray Vaughn?
March 1, 200520 yr comment_955669 I was impressed with the fact that the other judges complimented him on it, considering their leanings towards "presentation" and poppy sentiment. I don't know if I'd say he's the most talented guy to ever come from the show, but he definitely had a great performance.
March 1, 200520 yr comment_958165 Damn, I was kinda hoping for 'Melissa' but Whipping Post is the jam. I'll have to play them both at work tonight.
March 1, 200520 yr comment_959512 My wife and I are trash tv junkies. We followed the first two American Idol seasons. Never missed Paradise Hotel. Temptation Island, all that good stuff. Last season, I stopped watching Idol when the red-headed piece of trash continuously kep getting through to the next round. He had to be the worst singer EVER to get past the auditions. This season, I like the addition of the two rock guys but I was really impressed with the kid w/ dreadlocks... at least his audition. He was the only one that stood out w/ the exception of the whackjobs. Oh... which one is Bo Bice?
March 1, 200520 yr comment_960208 Bo Bice is the longer haired one that doesn't quite have the look of Constantine (who did a really shaky version of That Black Crowes Song). Constantine is the guy who quit his band. I didn't catch much of last season for American Idol but what I did catch was absolutely abysmal television.
March 24, 200520 yr comment_1373173 Thought I might bump this, considering that the production crew screwed up the voting numbers and Idol had to do a replay show last night of the performances. You know somebody got fired for that one. Right now, Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood seem to be the obvious frontrunners, though Nadia Turner is pretty close to them. Mikayla (or however she spells her name) has got to be toast last night, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Anwar or Constantine gone either.
March 24, 200520 yr Author comment_1374165 I'd agree with what you said. Nadia got a lot of criticism this week, and while it wasn't her best performance, I think I understood what she was trying to do. Bo is still my favorite.
March 24, 200520 yr Author comment_1378008 I must also admit that I've had a strange desire to kick some old school Heart since Tuesday night.
May 18, 200520 yr Author comment_2175508 Well, in case there was even a fraction of doubt, Bo won the competition for himself last night. The a cappella performance has to be the best performance ever on Idol. Absolutely amazing. In some ways, I'm afraid for him to win though, because I'm afraid they'll try to make him a total pop star, and that's really missing the boat on a lot of his appeal.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2175716 I don't think they will make him pop star-esque. I read this week's EW and Simon did an interview that says the artists with the most success so far in the record world (Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken) are the ones who stayed true to themselves when recording the album. However, the fact that Bo even made it this far has me scratching my head. Are a majority of 12-15 year olds really voting for Bo?
May 18, 200520 yr Author comment_2175828 That's what I can't figure out. The only thing I know is that he seems way too good for this show. I don't know that a pop producer can really do him justice on an album, although I do know Bo has written a lot of original music that he hasn't gotten a chance to share yet, so I'm sure some of it will make it on to his album. He's always been an excellent performer, but last night was one of the first nights he really showed off his vocals.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2175921 I think Steve and I agreed when we said there honestly hasn't been a decent person worthy to be "American Idol" since Kelly Clarkson. I saw a glimpse of the show last night and I mean they all have decent/good voices, but none of them are really that great in terms of just the ability to blow you away. I also think the best performance on American Idol was Clarkson's "A Moment Like This".
May 18, 200520 yr Author comment_2175994 I've never understood the Kelly Clarkson appeal at all, especially because Kimberley Locke would have whipped her monkey ass in Season 1 had she not had to deal with the network pushing Ruben and Clay so hard in Season 2. And while I don't hate Kelly, she's nowhere in Bo Bice's league as a performer or vocalist.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2176257 Well, Kelly Clarkson isn't chopped liver, but Bo Bice is actually one of the better competitors that the contest has seen in a while and he's gotten better with each week. What surprises me is how Carrie Underwood has just kind of fallen off the map. She was the straight-away winner early on, but she's been getting progressively worse and worse with each week. She even had some problems with "Man, I Feel Like A Woman" last night - a country pop song that seems like it would be right up her alley. I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but she's went from the odds-on favorite to be the one that's most likely to be canned tonight.
May 18, 200520 yr Author comment_2176386 I'm not so sure she'll go home before Vonzell, just because she has yet to be in the bottom three while Vonzell has many times. I'm watching the results show tonight for the sole purpose of seeing Vonzell dance at the post office again. I'll be terribly disappointed if she doesn't.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2179997 And while I don't hate Kelly, she's nowhere in Bo Bice's league as a performer or vocalist. Performer? I agree, but vocalist? Nah, I just can't side with you on that one.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2180093 I think Steve and I agreed when we said there honestly hasn't been a decent person worthy to be "American Idol" since Kelly Clarkson. You know, in terms of pure vocal quality, Clay Aiken has the chops. I hate the music, I think it is MOR crap, but he has the vocals. He also played it smart by not trying to go the kiddie-pop route and instead appeals to middle-age soccer moms who would have been huge Air Supply fans back in the day. As for Bo Bice, his vocals are what separates him from any other American Idol performer. He doesn;t haev the best range or even the best sound to his voice but it is the most unique out of anyone who has performed on the show.
May 18, 200520 yr Author comment_2180126 I get a major Molly Hatchet vibe from him, which isn't a sound everyone digs, but I do.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2180165 Dude, he sounds nothing like "Flirting with Diaster". Now, he may look like the guys in Molly Hatchet.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2180215 I've got this vibe that continually says that Bo's going to be like Aiken. The guy should win the contest, but ends up getting the short end in the final two.
May 18, 200520 yr Author comment_2180262 Clay had a great voice, but he was just too damn creepy for me. I still am bitter over Kimberley Locke being buried by the producers and not getting a fair shake, because they were so sold on that Ruben/Clay finale. But, I thought that vocally, she was better than both of them, and that she would have won either AI 1 or AI 3 had she been in either season.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2180380 I keep hearing how the producers want Bo to win, since they've had a white girl, a black guy. and a black girl win the first 3 seasons. It sounds silly, but it keeps popping up they want a white guy to win to balance things out.
May 18, 200520 yr comment_2180396 I think that just gives them the opportunity to say that anyone with talent can win it. Not just because they fit a certain criteria.
