Another one that ran out of time in the middle of the second fall. Ugh. C.W. Bergstrom & Billy Two Eagles vs. Avalanche & Buddy Rose – This featured some fun cat-and-mouse stuff with Two Eagles and the fat guys. But the bottom line is, this was no longer a promotion devoted to offering serious matches on television. Even when they had a fine working premise, they didn’t do much with it. Obviously, squashes were common on WWF and Crockett TV at the time. The difference is that Portland matched up significant workers on television; they just didn’t give them any time. Steve Doll vs. Avalanche – One of the better Portland TV matches I’ve seen from ’88. Doll really bumped and sold for Avalanche’s power offense and threw some good-looking punches during his mid-match comebacks. I also liked Avalanche’s progressive selling of fatigue (he might not have been selling entirely.) Look at that, they did an actual match with control segments and well-timed comebacks, and the crowd actually gave a shit. They went to the time limit but didn’t piss me off nearly as much as usual. This might only be good in comparison to the stuff around it, but I’ll give it a low-level nomination. Scott Peterson vs. Top Gun (Buddy Rose) – Buddy was wearing the mask as part of an angle. He dominated the first fall until he tossed Peterson over the top rope for a DQ. Then, Buddy whipped Peterson into the ref and put a plastic bag over Peterson’s head. The ring filled and everyone brawled. More angle than match. C.W. Bergstrom vs. The Grappler – Squash, with the Grappler pulling up his opponent at two several times. Eventually, Mike Golden came in to save Bergstrom from a further beating. Buddy Rose vs. Billy Two Eagles – Two Eagles dominated until they tumbled outside and Buddy posted him. Rose then tumbled back in to win by countout. Honestly, Buddy didn’t do much in the match. Avalanche vs. Mike Golden – Avalanche took the first fall quickly with a powerslam. My disc froze in the middle of the second, though I gather it was another time limit finish. Mike Golden vs. The Grappler – Golden tried to bring some fire to this, but The Grappler was pretty boring for a top guy. He ultimately kicked Golden with his loaded boot and choked him with Golden’s own bat for the DQ.
