Creepy yes but not uncommon for Verne as he was a huge presence in the USA Amateur wrestling program throughout his pro career. he loved shit like this.

 

Oddly enough, I thought it was strictly a Verne thing but I ran across some WWF 1983-ish TV some time back where Bob Backlund hosted an amateur contest just like this in the ring at a taping. Stunning to me that it happened there, too.
