Posted May 11, 201213 yr comment_5502291 Jason the Terrible vs. Invader III (December 1988) Invader worked pretty hard here. Jason not so much that's all there is to this. Victor Jovica vs. El Sollitario (November 1988) Not the Solitario. Carlos Colon vs. Kendo Nagasaki (July 1988) This actually starts with a good bit of chain wrestling here and it's not that bad actually especially on Colon's end. Colon hit his neckbreaker drop and then worked over Kendo's left leg before locking on the figure-four with Kendo giving up. Wow this was interesting to see Kendo submit right in the middle and have basically no control section. TNT vs. "Bulldog" Don Kent (December 1988) Fairly easy win for TNT. Next we get a midgets match that isn't very good. Rufus R. Jones vs. El Profe (January 1989) Nothing much here. Texas Tornado Match for the WWC Tag Titles: Bart & Brad Batten © vs. Dan Kroffat & Tama (February 1989) This is a brawl at the bell and Kroffat/Tama is quite the interesting team. Battens dominate to start but the heels would get the advantage with help from Chicky Starr at ringside. Nothing fancy here as the heels pound on the Battens with fans throwing beer in the ring in protest. The heels would lock on a double sleeper as Chicky Starr pulls the camera on him so he could primp and pose which was the greatest thing about this match. Battens would make their comeback and they tried to fire the fans up but they just sat there which was funny. Tama would pin Bart with help from Kroffat who was on the floor as he put pressure on Tama's back but another referee would come out to reverse the decision. This wasn't really that good. WWC Jr. Heavyweight Title: Ricky Santana © vs. Kensuke Sasaki (February 1989) Sasaki looks like Mr. Pogo Jr. here but in white not black. Nice fast paced action to start with Santana eventually focusing on Sasaki's left arm heavily. Santana would miss a diving elbow off the middle rope though giving Sasaki the chance he needed and with help from El Profe he would work over Santana. Sasaki would hit a nice tombstone piledriver for a nearfall and then Santana would almost immediately go back on offense but as he went up top, Profe pulled him off the top rope for the DQ. This was disappointing actually.
November 18, 201311 yr comment_5573110 Jason the Terrible vs. Invader III I think I'm just way higher on Jason than Kris is, because I really didn't see him as being lazy or underperforming in this match. You could argue that his offense could have been more inspired I guess, but the way the match was laid out, the pacing and delivery of his offense was set up specifically for Invader III hope spots. Really Invader took most of this on offense and I thought they played it up well with him trying to chop down the tree by attacking his leg. The work was simple but looked good as he was really laying it in, including a very tight looking crab. Jason came back with the mask, but again this set up some good hope and cut off spots like the sit out on the sunset flip, the really neat monkey flip reversal of the chokeslam and the big airball bump off the top from Jason. I also thought they did a good job making you think Invader might steal one, only to get shut down when Jason was able to hit the second headbutt off the top. Not a lock for the set or anything, but I could see this on the set. Victor Jovica vs. El Sollitario This is the phony Solitario working a stadium show which is interesting because prior to this I think I'd only seen him on tv. It actually started out okay, but quickly got sloppy and then boring. Jovica wasn't exactly a strong hand at this point. Carlos Colon vs. Kendo Nagasaki I actually enjoy Colon in matches like these because it sort of shows that he could work in a style that wasn't just blood and guts when he had to. There was nothing about this that was particularly special, and I agree that Kendo should have gotten more of the match, but I still enjoyed this for what it was. Finish of Ricky Santana v. El Profe is shown, followed by finish of Sasaki/Pogo v. Perez/Castillo. TNT vs. "Bulldog" Don Kent Completely insane that this match even exists as Kent really was up there in years at this point and seems like an odd style match for TNT even in a tv match. Quick match, though Kent did work hard and it wasn't bad at all. Masked Midget/Butch Cassidy v. Strongman/Magnificent Martin I don't even know who the fuck half of these midgets are. Honestly I have no clue where in the hell WWC managed to find this many midgets I've never seen or heard of to throw them into a random match but here you go. The announcer notes that Martin is French because of his goatee which is excellent reasoning. Cassidy almost kills Strongman with a powerslam on his head not once, but twice. They actually go to a commercial during this fucking match and come back which is something I don't remember ever seeing for a midgets match before. Anyway this seemed to go on forever and wasn't very good. Rufus R. Jones vs. El Profe Profe's pre-match cape twirl pre-match made me wish Rufus was in his king get up, as I wanted to see him beat the fuck out of Profe with the crown on. This was the worst Rufus match so far as a lot of it was Profe stalling and we didn't get a really inspired Rufus comeback. Too bad. Bart & Brad Batten © vs. Dan Kroffat & Tama This was actually hurt by being a Texas Tornado match, as it meant that there wasn't a really developed heat section to speak of and since they weren't going the route of full blown brawl the gimmick felt flat. This definitely got better as it went along with Chicky getting involved, fans throwing shit, a double FIP and double comeback and some fun brawling on the floor. Still this felt really uneven and the finish of this was stupid. Finishing stretch of TNT v. Abbuda Dein is shown. Ricky Santana © vs. Kensuke Sasaki This started off hot but tapered off quickly. This was out of character for Santana, so I kind of get the feeling this was tempered dramatically because Sasaki was seen as green. The work was fine and focused, but it was really low key, and there was nothing about it that grabbed you. Sasaki in control was pretty sloppy, though he did hit a big tombstone. Finish sucked.
