Posted May 14, 201213 yr comment_5502518 Rufus R. Jones & Super Medico (Jose Estrada) vs. Bart & Brad Batten (August 1989) I always dug the Batten's as heels and they were fun here and it helped the fans were loving Rufus. This was a fun Memphis style tag match with the heels being fun at stooging and the faces being good at outsmarting the heels and referee. Rufus start working FIP after Brad kneed him from the corner but the control section didn't last long as Medico would get the hot tag and ran wild on the Batten's before the 4-way brawl would start. The finish was fun as Bart would try a reverse splash off the middle rope but Medico would roll through and got the win. Fun spirited TV match but not enough for a nomination. Next we get a midgets match that was okay. Then we get a heated segment with Chicky Starr and the "Original TNT" facing off with TNT and the fans are nuts for this. Barbed Wire Match for the Universal Heavyweight Title: "Sadistic" Steve Strong (DiSalvo) © vs. TNT (August 1989) Bloody match but not very good. Next we get clips of Ivan Koloff vs. TNT. Kendo Nagasaki vs. The Invader (August 1989) Kendo wins with help from Ivan Koloff and this was okay for what it was. WWC Jr. Heavyweight Title: Chicky Starr © vs. "Flamboyant" Eric Embry (August 1989) This was a fairly short match but had some good action although there wasn't anything dynamic here to put it over the top as a nomination.
November 19, 201311 yr comment_5573329 Rufus R. Jones & Super Medico vs. Bart & Brad Batten Chicky Starr, Hugo and Carlos Colon are wearing tuxes and introduce this match from what looked like another part of the arena which is something I wasn't expecting. Awesome moment early as Rufus is in a headlock and goes into his jive dance, slips out and the Batten face plants to a huge pop. The Battens are actually really good heels as they do a great job taking solid bumps and playing the fool for the babyface team. Gotta love the faces doing the heel tactics behind the refs back as the Battens freak the fuck out and plead with the fans to tell the ref what is going on. The Battens finally get in a cheap shot to the back of Rufus when he hits the ropes to take over. I loved the way Rufus sold that shot as he sold it like an old man who's back went out while taking out the trash. The Battens end up doing the switcharoo behind the refs back that the faces had been utilizing against them, but Rufus is able to fight out shortly thereafter and we get an epic hot tag with the Batten leaping to stop it and Medico going fucking nuts with fists of furry to a massive pop. Rufus knocks one of the Battens out with a headbutt and then Medico rolls through on the reverse crossbody for the pin, as The Battens claim their tights were held. Well, this was fucking awesome and it's going on the set. Kris can veto it now but it doesn't matter, because it's going to be a personal pick. Little Tokyo/ v. Unknown Midget One and Unknown Midget Two JIP. No clue where PR keeps finding these midgets I'm unfamilar with, but they've done it again. A few seconds into this one of these guys takes a fucking crazy bump right on this head and then we get a fun criss cross spot with Tokyo having to come in to tell his partner that he's hitting the ropes for no reason because the other dude bailed. For some reason that spot never gets old to me. Man Tokyo is fucking awesome in this as he takes and sells this headscissors great, does this awesome gesture to his crotch when one of the midgets butt bumps his genitals and then ends up begging for his dignity in the ropes as the face midget team locks him in the ropes and rams his partner into him. Heels end up taking over with some decent cut off the ring stuff, though it gets broken up for some mildly amusing antics. Tokyo ended up having one more fun exchange and then took a quick fall. This was a hair under six minutes and JIP,but I thought it was good. The Chicky Starr/TNT segment had tremendous heat and Chicky was going nuts on the mic, made me wish I spoke Spanish (how many times will I say that throughout this?). Steve Strong v. TNT - Barbed Wire Match I am a huge mark for the WWC style Barbed Wire Match where you tease the big spots in the barbs and half the match is guys struggling to avoid it, but I will be the first to say that I am skeptical of any Steve Strong match. They go right to the teased spots early which I was fine with and there was a cool moment where TNT looked to be going into the wire when he quick headbutted Strong. Then Ivan Koloff popped up in a little box for a random promo which was odd given the gravity of what was going on in the ring. TNT gets Strong into the wire and we get the old mouth/barbed wire spot. TNT finally gets put into the wire and it is fucking sick as hell. You can sort of see his head get raked across the wire and he bleeds a massive gusher. Up until this point, this was a pretty middling match, though I did like the psychology of it. But once TNT starts juicing I think this picks up and you get the war you want with TNT getting a couple of great near falls off of side kicks, before they go to a couple of really well done double knock down spots. Good finish too as TNT locks on the Cobra Clutch and Strong fights out barely by shoving him into the wire. TNT goes for the kill off the ropes but gets hit with a hot shot into the wire (about as good a highspot as you were going to have involving the gimmick in this era) and pinned in the middle of the ring. WWC is a promotion known for blood and guts, and while this wasn't high end WWC blood and guts, the second half of this was very good. It deserves a serious look for the set. Ivan Koloff v. TNT JIP. TNT is in a bearhug that Koloff is using as a pinning combo. TNT eventually makes his comeback and I'll be damned if Ivan doesn't go up top and take a big crotch bump, before eating a nasty looking boot to the face. Ivan's scar tissue ends up getting ripped open and he gets his knees up on a big TNT splash which was a cool spot. Another weird thing here as I think they went to another draw after a final big bump from Ivan and when he was trapped in the clutch. I liked this, but not enough of it was shown. Either was Ivan really had his working boots on. Possible EXTRA Kendo Nagasaki vs. The Invader Opening of this is sort of funny as Invader is adamant about making Kendo man up and fight him. The opening of this is just back and fourth stuff with Invader working a head lock and Nagasaki working an arm stretcher once he was in control. I thought things were getting escalated when Kendo went to the floor and tipped over a barricade on Invader, but then he went right back to the arm which was smart, but odd. Invader made his comeback and wrecked Nagasaki into the same barricade, which I did like and I have to note again that Invader was really fucking over, probably a hair below Colon at worst. Just when it looked like the end for Kendo, Ivan Koloff ran out behind the refs back and helped Nagasaki win. Decent match actually, though not really anything special. Koloff seems to have been very over as a heel even this late. Next is clips of Carlos Colon interviewing a guy who is doing some sort of martial arts demonstration. Strange. Chicky Starr © vs. "Flamboyant" Eric Embry JIP with about nine and a half minutes shown. This seemed like it was near the very beginning of the match, but who knows for sure. Crazy to see babyface Embry in town, after his previous stints in PR. After the initial exchange Chicky takes an absolute nuts bump on a lariat. Seriously folds himself up like an accordion and ends up on the floor for a minute licking his wounds. Chicky briefly gained control but got battered in the corner and Embry locked on a flash figure-four which I sort of loved given how big a deal the move is in PR, but Chicky quickly scooted back to the floor. Back in the ring we get Chicky offering his hand to Eric in the most hammy way imaginable which leads to more fist of fury from Embry. Embry ends up taking a nice bump on a missed cross body which is followed up by a tremendously scummy strut from Chicky. Then we get Chicky attacking the leg and trying to lock on a figure-four of his own, but Embry keeps escaping. Fun exchange of shots with Embry throwing punches and Chicky kicks to the leg, leads to the strap dropping comeback and an eventual Embry near fall on a diving headbutt. Chicky ends up stealing the win by inching his shoulders up on the old belly-to-back double pin. This wasn't great, but there are worse matches nominated, and I am a pretty big fan of both face Embry and uber-douche Chicky, and both of them are on display here. I did have some minor disc issues here, but it may have been the media player on my computer. This disc really illustrates how far away I am from Kris on a lot of this stuff, as this was probably one of my favorite discs of PR from beginning to end that I've watched and he seemed pretty cool to it.
November 20, 201311 yr comment_5573398 The Chicky Starr vs. Eric Embry match is for the Junior heavyweight title and is rudo vs. rudo. Carlos on commentary mentions that he is happy that Chicky is going to get a taste of his own medicine facing Embry ("Chicky's facing someone who may be even more rudo than he is"). They debate potential rule changes, wiith Chicky claiming that they are out to get him and Carlos saying they should bar managers from accompanying their rudo charges. Steve Strong cuts an insert promo about the Universal title rematch with JYD in Caguas (the previous match had been in Carolina). Carlos says that Embry is outwrestling Chicky and Hugo mentions that even though both are rudos it seems the crowd is favoring Embry. Chicky takes exception to this. Hugo is amazed that the crowd is rooting for Embry, it may be the first time ever in Puerto Rico that's happened. There's a time call around 7:50 but I can't make it out. Is this the The Chicky Starr/TNT segment? There's a Sports shop segment about the challenge: And there's one on one match setting up the planned blow-off at Aniversario 89: Is this the midgets match? Hugo mentions at the start that the match has only been going on a couple of minutes. At 2:38, Eliud Gonzalez makes the 5 minute time call. There's also this match from Bayamon: Profe on commentary (the commentary is dubbed for one of the video releases) says it's from a Three Kings Day show but I'm not sure of the date (may be 89 or 90).
November 20, 201311 yr comment_5573400 That first one is definitely the right midget match. That is also the right Chicky v. TNT segment.
