Scaffold Match: Chicky Starr vs. Invader III (September 1988) You can't do a whole lot in scaffold matches but these guys pound the shit out of each other on an extremely high scaffold. Chicky is gushing blood and Invader tries his best to get him to fall but Chicky makes a comeback and this becomes a battle of who will knock the other one off. Invader III hangs off and uses his legs to get himself back on the structure and on the scaffold as fans throw shit on Chicky from the stands to the top which was something. Invader attacks Chicky from behind and the crowd is going apeshit. Chicky eventually is hanging off and Invader just punches the shit out of him and he falls off ankles first on the mat. This was a very strong scaffold match and this is a easy nomination to me.

Invader III v. Chicky Starr - Scaffold Match 86 or 9/88 ?

 

 

Not sure of the date as KrisZ says Sept 88, but youtube says 86. Unless we are talking different matches though I don't think we are. Whatever the case may be this was a GREAT match. The best scaffold match I've ever seen and that includes the two really good ones from Memphis. What made this work is not only did they get over the danger of the gimmick (the scaffold was so fucking high it would have been impossible not to), they also worked in some surprises and enough violence to make it feel like the sort of feud that merited two guys climbing on a scaffold and trying to kill each other. Lots of big punches in this. Starr bleeds and I give him a ton of credit here for the way he was bumping. It's not that he took huge bumps, but he took a suplex on this thing that was shaky as hell and after Invader hit a dropkick he did this great scurrying collapse that made my heart skip a time or two as even knowing he lives, it looked like one wrong movement would have killed him. There were some other good weeble wobble moments up there and guys hanging off the side and barely surviving. The bit with Starr thinking he won and Invade sneaking up on him was good and the finish was satisfying. Really awesome stuff. Totally exceeded my expectations.

Slam Dunk nomination, not sure if this is as good as Koko v. Dundee, but it is a discussion. Had all the crazy danger you want from a scaffold match and some really great offense. That dropkick by Invader was nuts. Really enjoyed this

I think this was better than Ware-Dundee and I love that match. This was the king of scaffold matches adnd is probably one of the Top Matches of the 80s anyway. The queasy feeling I got in my stomach after the near falls (get it) and two dudes punching each other in the face for ten minutes, the kidney punches, the Chicky Starr false win was great. The final landing was sickening. Holy Shit that was spectacular and reinforces my opinion about the pole match even more. SLAM DUNK

Scaffold Match: Chicky Starr vs. Invader III (September 1988) -

 

The craziest part about this match is that we have Invader doing flying missile dropkicks and suplexes on a scaffolding. That's a terrible idea in theory and a terrible idea in practice. The dropkick spot was "holy shit" level and the best scaffold spot of all time. The rest of the match was awesome because the only other thing anyone can do on a scaffold is punch each other. So, Chicky got his ass punched a lot and bled like a pig. I loved his near misses. My favorite may have been the hilarious collar and elbow tie up attempt. Invader shoves him on his ass and he nearly dies. The spot where Invader pulls himself back up was great but I loved the finish with Invader doing a JYD headbutt and stomping the fuck out of Chicky's fingers leading to the horrifying crash to the mat. Really, there's no safe way of falling off a goddamn scaffolding. This was insane and the best scaffold match ever. EASY nomination.
