June 30, 200520 yr Author comment_2712813 Watched a little from each of these tapes last night. Misawa vs. Kobashi 10-21-97 Heavyweights working a junior style match. Lots of nice moves but little in the way of story. Crush Gals vs. Devil/Jaguar 6-28-84 30 minute draw. Disappointing since both teams played faces, though Devil/Jag tried to heel it up on occasion. Yokota brings a rana early on which dazzles. Asuka brought out a sit down powerbomb for a great nearfall late. If you have seen Frank Jewett's post at tOA regarding Dos Caras vs. Jumbo Tsuruta from 4/79, Jumbo does a powerbomb 'Kawada' style (he has a video in the post). This is the first time I have seen a sit down powerbomb used. Chigusa looked off, as her kicks were hit or miss and in general just didn't seem that great. I started to watch Chigusa vs. Asuka from 4/85 but it didn't woo me in so I switched. One other note about this AJW 80's stuff. There mat work (particularly takedowns) is so MMA that you would think MMA would be going on in Japan during this time period. Another way they were so ahead of the game. Rey Jr./Misterioso/Volador vs. Parka/Estrada/Psicosis (8/27/93 - HH from San Jose) Good match, with a nice angle that let's you see almost everything perfectly, minus the cameraman getting jittery a couple of times. Really basic lucha match but I am perfectly fine with basic over spectacular and messy. Technicos control the first fall with flying and making the rudos jumble around in a comedy of errors. Second fall starst that way until rudos gain control and beat up the technicos. Third fall starts with the 3 on 1 beatings, with each technico taking a turn until the dives and then the finish. Besides the opening portion not having a lot of mat work, that is the basic technico/rudo AAA formula for matches and it works for me.
