Posted July 17, 201213 yr comment_5510397 VQ - Excellent (24/7) 1. Bob Backlund vs. Salvatore Bellomo This was a good, solid opener with some fun exchanges. It's Backlund's last match in the WWF until his comeback in the mid 90s. They start it off with some fun amateur wrestling and Bellomo shows his athleticism with cartwheels and sweet dropkicks. We get some Backlund fun as he keeps getting Bellomo locked into a headscissors after he continues to find different ways to escape it. Bellomo applies a long side headlock which drained some of the fun. However, he soon takes a great bump off of a back body drop and flies over the ropes and to the floor after a Backlund dropkick. The final exchanges are fun with some similarities to the start of the match. Backlund gets Bellomo on the mat and pins him with a bridge. The two hug out of respect after the match. This was a nice little exhibition and it seems like Bob was given the opportunity to do some cool stuff in ten minutes. I'm not nominating it but this was a pleasant watch. 2. Gama Singh vs. Dave Barbie This match happened. It felt like I was watching two trainees work on calling spots in a warehouse in northwest Georgia. That's what it was. 3. Mr. Fuji vs. Tiger Chung Lee This was so long and so boring. Lee's offense sucks. Fuji is amusing and entertaining to watch for his facial expressions and occasional good bump but I don't enjoy long claw holds on someone's abdomen. Shockingly, this match has some structure with real cut off spots that engaged the crowd. Fuji got his salt stolen from the ref but still won with two second rope Vader Bombs/splashes. 4. Andre The Giant vs. Big John Studd My God, this was bad. Studd has no redeeming value at all. Andre at least threw some stiff chops, knees, and strikes towards the end. There was loads of bullshit stalling by Studd and long headlocks by Andre. No thanks. 5. The Freebirds vs. Ron Shawn/Rene Goulet/Charlie Fulton The Freebirds entrance was awesome. However, they just don't resonate with me as faces. This match felt rushed as hell and never got going. It was clearly supposed to be a squash but everything was so frantic. The finish is scary with Gordy catching Fulton off of a double back drop from Hayes and Roberts for a powerbomb but doesn't lift him all the way up. Instead he gets him half way off the ground and spikes him on his head. 6. The Haiti Kid vs. Danny Carpenter (Midget Match) Well, a one sided midget match is the second best match on this card. The Haiti Kid did some comedy spots that got some laughs from Dick Graham. He won the match after Carpenter missed a turnbuckle charge and tripped over The Haiti Kid backwards which resulted in The Haiti Kidd winning. 7. Hulk Hogan vs. Greg Valentine (WWF Title) Eh, this was alright. Their July match in MSG was far better and more heated. They went through a lot of the same spots as that match. There was some stiffness and Hulk's offense looked good. Valentine bumped well for it early on. Hulk had his leg worked on after getting it smashed by a chair. He countered the figure four and did his thing to retain. Final Analysis Man, this show was bad. Nothing delivered except Bob Backlund vs. Salvatore Bellomo of all people and that was just a fun sprint. Every match sounded unappealing and mostly came out to be that way. I don't think too many shows will be as bad or worse than this one.
