Posted July 22, 201213 yr comment_5510808 VQ - Excellent (24/7) 1. Rene Goulet vs. Akira Maeda This wasn't a bad opener. They worked the mat pretty extensively. Most of it was basic but everything looked good. It's interesting to see a young Maeda in WWF. Pretty bizarre. Goulet won with a suplex over the ropes and back into the ring. Once again, this was an okay opener with some solid mat work to open the show. 2. B. Brian Blair vs. Ron Shaw Alright match. Blair did some solid arm work. There was a cool spot where Shaw was in the corner begging and just laid a nasty forearm to Blair. Shaw did a lot of basic stuff in his control segment so nothing really came out of that. He put in a sleeper and Blair fought back. Blair did a few stiff looking knees and a cool face rake then won with the abdominal stretch pin/combo for the win. Like I said, a decent little match but really just basic stuff. 3. Afa vs. Salvatore Bellomo This wasn't too bad. Bellomo had some nice flurry of offense going to start. He did his mule kick after some rope running spots which I liked. Once Afa took control this fell into the boring and terrible range. Afa just applied a long chin lock, then switched to a long nerve hold. That's compelling stuff. Sal slowly fought back and sold fairly well. He got a decent comeback going and gave Afa a good dropkick. The finish is actually horrifying as Sal runs the ropes but gets back body dropped for the second time in the match but this time goes flying back first into the ropes. His feet bounce violently on the ropes and he falls on his head. Totally insane shit. He then did a jumping headbutt for the win. This match was bad for the most part but that finish was sickening. 4. Sgt. Slaughter vs. David Schultz Solid match. Today, we learned David Schultz couldn't properly execute a clothesline. The two jawed with one another at the start then Sarge slapped Schultz. Sarge always seems to be able to have great starts to his matches. Sarge threw Schultz around and slammed his head on the announce table. He went for a charge in a corner but missed and took an insane bump shoulder first into the ring post. Schultz then gave him a dangerously shitty clothesline that Sarge took a head over heels bump for. Sarge seemed dazed and confused literally for a few minutes. Schultz then meandered around the ring for awhile and did nothing of note. Sarge finally came back and hit a clothesline which Schultz sold bad. Sarge got the pin and celebrated after the match. The finish sucked but Sarge worked hard to keep this to an average and solid match. 5. Tiger Chung Lee vs. Jose Luis Rivera Horrible match. They actually did spots in this and even executed them but it was all slow. Lee's offensive control segment was really, really abysmal. He just shuffled along and did everything so weakly. Rivera's comeback was awful as it just consisted of punches that didn't connect in a corner. Rivera did run the ropes well for the finish and hit a decent cross body that Lee reversed and got the pin. This, though was pretty match incredibly bland and crappy. 6. Buzz Sawyer vs. The Tonga Kid Okay squash match. Tonga bumped great in this. He took a great bump to the floor, got suplexed, and took a good bump on a bulldog. He didn't get much offense and nothing exciting happened. Buzz won the match with the aforementioned bulldog. So, this was pretty much just a solid squash match. 7. Hulk Hogan vs. The Iron Sheik (WWF Title) This was 71 on the first set. Very good bloodbath. Sheik attacks Hulk during his entrance. He tears his shirt, chokes him with his own attire, and pounds on him in the corner. He even spits on him a few times which pisses the crowd off. Hulk eventually gets his face shine and throws his cool punches. Hulk spits at Sheik himself and the crowd is insane. Sheik gets in a cheap shot with his boot. Hulk gets bloodied pretty severely by the boot. Sheik works over the cut and even bites it. Finally, Hogan gets some energy and fights back. He reverses a suplex attempt into his own then goes for Sheik's boot. There's a struggle for the boot and Hulk finally gets it off. He bloodies Sheik with the boot and the brawl on the floor. Hulk works over Sheik's cut and bites it. Sheik is now a bloody mess. The match ends in a double count-out so Hulk retains the belt. This was a very good and hate filled bloodbath. The crowd was great and there was solid structure and a great heat segment. Solid nomination. 8. Greg Valentine vs. Tito Santana Pretty good match. The first half of this wasn't good. There was a lot of plodding along going on and things weren't going anywhere. Valentine was on offense for the majority of this and things were really slow. Tito got a decent hope spot in and things were better from there. The Hammer worked on Tito's leg extensively and started to increase the stiffness of his offense. Tito avoided the figure four and gave him his awesome flying forearm. Valentine sold the impact on the ring apron and Tito went for a charge but Valentine pulled down the rope and Tito literally flew over the ropes and onto the floor without anything to break his fall. Totally fucking insane bump. Then Tito and Valentine has a brutal fist fight on the apron before The Hammer crotches Tito on the apron violently. Valentine was disqualified and Tito won the match. This was pretty boring and by the numbers for the first half but the finishing run was tremendous. Still, the first half hurt this too much for nomination. 9. Terry Daniels vs. Rene Goulet The highlight of this was Dick Graham making a sex joke. Goulet wrestles his second match of the night and loses his second match of the night. This was just whatever as they did some mat work to start. Daniels got a decent near fall off of a cross body. He then worked on Goulet's arm for a few minutes. Goulet, however, took control and applied a long claw hold. He then slammed Daniels into the corner and went for another slam but Daniels reversed it into a pin for the win. This really was a match that simply happened and nothing else except Dick Graham's joke. 10. Susan Starr/Donna Christianello vs. Wendi Richter/Peggy Lee This was actually okay. The ladies went through their spots and everything looked good. There were even a few stiff spots in this. Starr took a nasty looking gut wrencher onto Lee's knees. Starr and Christianello won after Richter accidentally hit Lee with a flying back elbow smash while trying to hit Starr. Referee Dick Worley kicked Wendi in the ass after the match and Richter ran him off. Amusing. In the end, this ended up being a surprisingly decent match. 11. Rocky Johnson vs. Samula This sucked BAD. Rocky got in some jigs and okay offense including Samula taking a great bump before the shit turned real stale. Samula applied a nerve hold the ENTIRE rest of the match. Rocky tried to make it interesting by keeping a struggle but man that was terrible. Rocky came back, ran the ropes, and won with a sunset flip. To sum it all up, this was pretty awful and got "BORING" chants from the great citizens of Philadelphia. Final Analysis This was a bad show for half of it and an average show for the rest. We did have Hogan-Sheik which was very good and will be nominated but Valentine-Tito was ultimately a disappointment and the match to close the show was absolutely putrid.
